Com base nessa refutação, Platão constrói uma teoria ontológica que não só pretende ser totalmente consistente, mas

2 também pretende explicar a impossibilidade de não estar no sentido de não-entidade, o não-ser no sentido de ser diferente, e a possibilidade e estrutura de afirmações afirmativas e negativas. O objetivo do seminário é compreender filosoficamente cada uma das teorias refutadas por Platão, assim como avaliar criticamente a teoria desenvolvida por Platão. Sentença assertiva Verdade e Falsidade 6.Syllabus In the Sophist, Plato refutes a series of ontological theories by showing them to be inconsistent, self-contradictory, self-refuting, and incompatible with language. On the basis of this refutation Plato constructs an ontological theory that not only purports to be fully consistent, but also to account for the possibility and structure of affirmative and negative assertive statements, the impossibility of not-being in the sense of non-entity, the fact that there is such thing as not-being in the sense of being different. The purpose of the course is to philosophically understand each one of the theories rebutted by Plato,

3 assess Plato s critic, and evaluate the novelties, efficacy, advantages, and disadvantages of Plato s theory. De facto, o exercício de tais habilidades é um pré-requisito para uma compreensão filosófica e crítica do Sofista e da ontologia de Platão. Por este motivo, o sofista de Platão oferece uma ótima oportunidade para praticar e melhorar habilidades filosóficas em um nível avançado. Também oferece um desafio e a oportunidade de abordar criticamente a bibliografia secundária e se desenvolver tanto em discussão oral quanto em discussão escrita. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

4 A close philosophical and critical reading of an Ontological Platonic Dialogue like the Sophist demands a combination of abilities such as argument, conceptual, textual, philosophical, and historical analysis. As a matter of fact, the exercise of this abilities is a prerequisite for a philosophical and critical understanding of Plato s Sophist and its Ontology. For this reason, Plato s Sophist offers a great opportunity to practice and improve philosophical skills at an advance level, not to mention that it offers a challenge and opportunity to critically engage with secondary bibliography in both oral and written discussion. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) Metodologias de ensino: Apresentações e discussão socrática no seminário, e um artigo final. 5 Durante 2400 anos, a discussão socrática tem demonstrado ser o melhor método de ensino da Filosofia, e hoje é o método de ensino estabelecido, particularmente no ensino de MA e PhD. A partir da segunda semana do seminário, o instrutor orientará os alunos na redação de um artigo final. O objetivo deste trabalho é aplicar de forma sistemática e supervisionada os métodos de análise praticados nas reuniões mencionados nos objectivos de aprendizagem do seminário. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes During 2400 years, Socratic discussion has been proven to be the best method of teaching Philosophy and it is nowadays the stablished method of teaching, particularly at the MA and PhD level. From the second week of the seminar onwards, the instructor would guide students in the writing of a final paper.
