2 developing students capacity to turn a study topic into a relevant research question and to design the quantitative research plan (experimental design, sample, variables, hypotheses, etc) in a way that is adequate for the objectives defined; explaining the main quantitative research models; supporting the development of competences in the framework of the selection of adequate statistical techniques for the problems to be researched; to stimulate knowledge about the methodologies for the analysis of statistical data and applying that knowledge in order to address the research questions formulated. to promote the successful use of the statistical progras used in psychology; to develop competences related to writing and presentation of results, as well as to ptomote the critical reading of relevant scientific research publications. 6. Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da unidade curricular Esta unidade curricular e os conteúdos programáticos propostos visam garantir os conhecimentos fundamentais para que os alunos sejam capazes de realizar e compreender a investigação quantitativa de forma autónoma e crítica. Pretende-se, através de uma adequada apresentação da disciplina, com os seus pressupostos, áreas de aplicação, mais-valias e fragilidades particulares, desenvolver conhecimentos e estimular práticas no âmbito da investigação quantitativa. Os conteúdos programáticos foram, por isso, construídos de forma sequencial a partir de cada

3 uma das etapas da investigação quantitativa, desde o planeamento detalhado do plano experimental até à análise e apresentação dos resultados. Esta unidade curricular tem um papel importante no desenvolvimento da capacidade de aplicação dos modelos estatísticos à realidade dos problemas de estudo em Psicologia. Será, por essa razão, dado especial destaque aos principais tipos de análise estatística e à lógica da sua utilização em função dos problemas em estudo, bem como à sua aplicação com recurso a softwares estatísticos. Demonstration of the coherence between the syllabus and the curricular unit's objectives This curricular unit and the proposed contents intend to ensure foundational knowledge for the students to be able to perform and understand quantitative research in an automatic and and critical way. The course aims at presenting the discipline with its particular preconditions and assumptions, application areas, its added values and frailties, and at developing knowledge and stimulating good practice at the level of quantitative research. The syllabus contents have been planned in a sequence involving each milestone of the quantitative research, from detailed planning of the experimental plan to the analysis and presentation of results. This curricular unit plays an important role in the development of the application of the statistical models to the reality of the issues that psychology deals with. Therefore a special focus will be given to the main kinds of statistical analysis and to the logic behind their use, according to the problems that are studied, as well as according to their application with the support of statistical software. 8. Metodologia de ensino (avaliação incluída) Esta unidade curricular terá uma componente teórica e uma componente teórico-prática. A componente teórica tem como objetivo a introdução aos conceitos básicos da disciplina e será essencialmente expositiva. O recurso a exemplos práticos será, contudo, um aspeto igualmente fundamental nesta componente. Na component teórico-prática realizar-se-ão exercícios práticos com os alunos, tendo como base os conceitos adquiridos e, sempre que tal se justifique, fazendo uso de programas estatísticos adequados. Os materiais utilizados e a bibliografia específica para cada um dos temas do programa serão facultados. Avaliação contínua, que envolve a realização de um trabalho prático (60% da nota final) e de um exame (40%).O trabalho consiste no desenvolvimento da estrutura de um pequeno projeto de investigação quantitativa e será realizado em grupo. O objetivo é confrontar os alunos com a aplicação prática dos conteúdos lecionados, estimulando o interesse pela investigação Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) This curricular unit foresees a theoretical and a practical part. The former has the goal of introducing the basic concepts of the discipline and it will mostly consist of presentation. Nonetheless there wil be room for discussing practical examples. The theoretical-practical component of the course foresees practical exercises on the basis of the acquired concepts and the use of statistical programs, whenever these are deemed necessary. All materials and

4 bibliographical references will be provided to the students in due course. Evaluation in this unitwill follow a model of continuous assessment, including a practical assignment (60% of the final grade) and a written exam (40%).The assignment consists of developing the structure for a small research project of quantitative research, and it will be carried out in small groups. The aim of this work is to allow students to apply in a practical task the contents they have learned and to increase their interest for scientific research. 9. Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Tal como foi já referido, esta unidade curricular tem como objectivo o desenvolvimento das competências e o treino da utilização dos métodos quantitativos na Psicologia. Nesse sentido, será necessária uma adequada explicitação dos modelos, das particularidades e dos problemas que se colocam nas várias etapas da estruturação, aplicação, análise e apresentação de resultados quantitativos. Este objectivo implica, não só, uma vertente mais expositiva, para veiculação desses conhecimentos, mas também uma vertente prática de aplicação autónoma e crítica destes. Com base nessa perspectiva, destaca-se a importância da vertente teórico-prática com os exercícios práticos e o treino de competências ao nível da utilização de softwares. Acresce ainda a opção por um modelo de avaliação que implicará, por um lado, a avaliação dos conceitos teóricos e, por outro, a avaliação através de um projecto de investigação. Esse projecto permitirá a experiência do contacto com a realidade da investigação quantitativa em todas as suas etapas e o despertar do interesse dos alunos pela abordagem científica quantitativa aos problemas da Psicologia. Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the curricular unit's objectives As has been mentioned, this curricular unit aims at developing the competences and training the use fo quantitative methods in psychology. In this sense, the first step is to explain the models, the particularities and the problems that emerge in the different stages of structuring, application, analysis and presentation of quantitative results. This aim implies a focus on presentation in one part of the course, so that this knowledge may be acquired, but also a practical part, in which students apply this knowledge, both autonomously and critically. Based on this perspective, a focus should be given to the theoretical-practical component of the course, which foresees practical exercises and the possibility to train the competence to use relevant software. Moreover, the model for evaluation of the course will imply, on the one hand, the evaluation of acquired theoretical concepts, and on the other hand their application in a research project. The latter will allow students to have the experience of doing quantitative research, following all its stages, and thus enhancing their interest for the scientific quantitative approach to topics in psychology.
