Phrasal Analysis Clauses and sentences Analysis of complex sentences. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Nesta UC da área de Linguística Inglesa pretende-se que os alunos se familiarizem com as várias unidades estruturais da língua inglesa: fonemas, morfemas, sintagmas, orações e frases. Procura-se que saibam reconhecer os sons do inglês, as suas regras de pronunciação, bem como entender a estrutura das palavras, dos sintagmas, das orações e das frases, procedendo à sua análise em termos linguísticos. Assim, o programa inicia-se pela descrição e análise das unidades menores (os fonemas), terminando com a descrição e análise das unidades maiores (as frases). Pretende-se, pois, que, com esta disciplina, os alunos passem a sentir-se à vontade com a organização e estrutura do inglês. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives In this curricular unit belonging to the area of English Linguistics, students should be familiar with the several structural units of the English language: phonemes, morphemes, phrases, clauses and sentences. They should be able to recognize the sounds of English, its pronunciation rules, as well as apprehend the structure of words, phrases, clauses and

3 sentences and be able to analyse them. Therefore, the program starts with the description and analysis of the minor English linguistic units (the phonemes) and ends with the description and analysis of the major ones (the sentences). The main goal is leading the students to know and recognize the organization and structure of English. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) As aulas são de ordem teórico-prática. As primeiras sessões são sobretudo de natureza teórica, sobre a relevância do SE e do RP. Procura-se também que os alunos tenham acesso a teorias e modelos de análise linguística para depois se centrarem em exercícios de natureza prática. Privilegia-se assim o debate e participação em sala de aula. Para além das unidades linguísticas propostas para análise em aula pelo professor, os alunos são ainda estimulados a trabalharem em casa, com exercícios dados pelo professor ou procurando eles próprios unidades de análise. A avaliação consiste em dois testes presenciais escritos, que visam determinar o conhecimento por parte dos alunos da descrição e análise das unidades linguísticas, e na participação nas aulas que, nesta disciplina, é absolutamente fundamental. Teste escrito: 40% Trabalho: 40% Participação nas aulas: 20% 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Classes are theoretical-practical. The first sessions are mainly theoretical with the presentation of the characteristics of SE and RP. Students are also supposed to be introduced to models and theories of linguistic analysis in order to be able to analyse the several linguistics units of the English language. As such, the learning experience in this unit is mostly oriented by dialogical criteria. Apart from the units suggested by the teacher, students are also stimulated to work at home, solving exercises created by the teacher or even by themselves. Evaluation consists on two written tests in which students must analyse the several linguistic units described in class. Final evaluation also takes into consideration the

4 participation in class which, in the case of this curricular unit, is absolutely indispensable. Written test: 40% Written work: 40% Participation in class: 20% 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A metodologia de ensino adoptada permite aos alunos conhecerem a estrutura da língua inglesa através da análise das várias unidades que a constituem, numa abordagem que pretende, por um lado, fornecer-lhes os instrumentos de descrição e, por outro, pô-los em prática. O entendimento do Inglês promove ainda uma boa redacção e expressão escritas. O reconhecimento das estruturas permite também aos alunos dominar de forma científica a língua com que trabalham. Por fim, auxilia-os, por exemplo, na tradução de textos ingleses para outras línguas. Do mesmo modo, o debate em sala aula permite o diálogo e reflexão críticos, bem como uma boa expressão oral e um aumento da capacidade argumentativa dos alunos. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes The teaching methodology adopted in this curricular unit leads students to recognize the structure of the English language by the description and analysis of its several linguistic units. On the one hand, this approach allows students to get in touch with models of linguistic description and, on the other, enables them to apply this theoretical knowledge to practical examples. The understanding of the structure of English ensures the practice of a good written expression by giving students the tools to develop a text structurally and semantically logic and cohesive. The recognition of linguistic structures helps them to be scientifically proficient with the language they work with. At last, it also aids them, for example, in the translation of English into other languages. At the same time, the debate in class helps students to think critically, to express themselves orally and to defend their arguments in a consistent way.
