Rever e consolidar conhecimentos de inglês pré-existentes no sentido de eliminar incorrecções no trabalho escrito e oral. Expandir vocabulário e capacidades de leitura. 2. Desenvolver a consciência linguística do aluno para que seja capaz de exprimir opiniões sobre temas da actualidade e dos media pormenorizadamente. Escrever textos fluentes e coerentes sobre assuntos que lhe são familiares. 3. Ler e compreender o inglês dos media e da actualidade (imprensa, publicações on-line). Compreender as ideias principais em textos complexos sobre assuntos concretos e abstractos. 4. Escrever e explicar de forma clara um ponto de vista correctamente justificado. 5. Fornecer ao aluno os conhecimentos necessários para o uso receptivo e produtivo do inglês, para que seja capaz de comunicar, com um certo grau de espontaneidade e à- vontade, em diferentes actividades pedagógicas e da vida real.

2 Learning outcomes of the curricular unit Objectives (B2.1 independent speaker level 1 according to the Common European Framework): 1. To revise, recycle and consolidate students existing knowledge of English in order to eliminate inaccuracy in spoken and written work. To extend students vocabulary and reading skills. 2. To develop students language awareness in order to aid them to express opinions on a range of media and current affairs themes. To present detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects. Write fluent and coherent texts on familiar matters. 3. To read and understand English used in the current media (newspapers, the Internet) and complex articles concerned with contemporary problems. 4. To write clearly and explain a well-supported viewpoint on a topical issue. 5. To provide students with the necessary skills to use English both receptively and productively to engage in a range of pedagogic and real-life activities and to interact with a certain degree of fluency and spontaneity. 6. Conteúdos programáticos O conteúdo programático da disciplina aborda o tema geral dos media e cultura, em particular: 1. Temas da actualidade 2. Discurso e texto dos media (artigo, crónica, ensaio) 3. Televisão (análise de género boletins informativos, debates e talk-shows, telenovelas, séries, sit-coms, etc.) 4. Imprensa (análise de jornais de língua inglesa quality papers e tabloids) Gramática: 5. Tempos verbais da língua inglesa (incluindo o tempo futuro, em particular o Future Perfect e Future Perfect Continuous). Syllabus The course will deal with a number of media and culture-related themes, including, in particular: 1. Current Affairs 2. Text and Media discourse (newspaper articles, columns, features, essays) 3. Television (genre analysis news bulletins, debates and talk-shows, soap-operas, series, sit-coms, etc.) 4. Press (with a focus on English-language newspapers quality papers and tabloids) Grammar: 5. English verb tenses (including the grammatical means to express the future, with a focus on the Future Perfect and the Future Perfect Continuous).

Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da unidade curricular O objectivo 1 é alcançado através da prossecução dos conteúdos programáticos 1, 2, 3 e 5, que consolidam estruturas linguísticas e expandem vocabulário e capacidade de leitura. O objectivo 2 é alcançado através dos conteúdos programáticos 2 e 4, que promovem o pensamento crítico e permitem a produção de textos escritos argumentativos. O objectivo 3 é alcançado pelos conteúdos programáticos 2, 4 e 5, que consolidam capacidades de leitura e compreensão. O objectivo 4 alcança-se através dos conteúdos programáticos 1, 2 e 5, que permitem a consolidação de vocabulário e estruturas linguísticas que acompanhem a produção autónoma (oral e escrita) em língua inglesa. O objectivo 5 alcança-se através dos conteúdos 1 e 3, que promovem o uso receptivo e produtivo do inglês em situações da vida real. Demonstration of the coherence between the syllabus and the objectives of the curricular unit Objective 1 is achieved by following themes 1, 2, 3 and 5, which consolidate existing linguistic knowledge and extend vocabulary and reading skills. Objective 2 is achieved by themes 2 and 4, which promote critical thinking and the production of fluent, coherent texts on a range of pertinent subjects. Objective 3 is achieved by following themes 2, 4 and 5, which consolidate reading comprehension skills. Objective 4 is achieved by following themes 1, 2 and 5, which consolidate vocabulary and linguistic knowledge essential to the independent, productive (spoken and written) use of English. Objective 5 is achieved by following themes 1 and 3, which provide students with the necessary skills to use English both receptively and productively to engage in real-life activities. 8. Metodologia de ensino (avaliação incluída) Ensino: Adoptar-se-á uma abordagem comunicativa que procura integrar diferentes competências linguísticas, com o objectivo de promover uma comunicação relevante e autêntica em inglês. O processo de aprendizagem da língua inglesa será criativo e construtivo, englobando correcção e precisão linguísticas e o método por tentativa e erro. 4 Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Ensino: A commmunicative approach which involves the integration of different language skills will be used throughout the course, so as to make authentic and meaningful communication the goal of classroom activities. Learners are guided to make English language learning a process of creative construction which involves trial and error as well as accuracy and proficiency. Avaliação: The system of evaluation used is continuous assessment. This is divided up as follows: Portfolio: 25% End of semester test: 40% Oral assignments: 25% Participation and attendance: 10% 9. Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Os objectivos principais da disciplina centram-se na autonomia e consciência linguísticas sobre os media em língua inglesa, fornecendo ao aluno os meios para a recepção e produção independente da língua inglesa em situações da vida real. Assim, a metodologia de ensino procura expandir vocabulário e capacidades de leitura, com particular ênfase dada ao tema dos media e cultura, o que se consegue através da constante exposição do aluno aos media de língua inglesa em sala de aula. A metodologia de avaliação adoptada tem, pois, como pilar uma abordagem comunicativa que promove e avalia as competências receptivas do aluno através da compreensão de textos escritos (presentes nos testes escritos presenciais) bem como as suas competências produtivas orais e escritas (argumentação escrita presente no portefólio e teste final, apresentações orais e participação na aula). Estes elementos de avaliação pretendem desenvolver a consciência linguística do aluno para que seja capaz de exprimir opiniões sobre temas de actualidade e dos media e conduzir uma reflexão crítica sobre os mesmos. O aluno é igualmente informado de que, para o cumprimento dos objectivos e uma avaliação bem sucedida na disciplina de Língua Inglesa I, o seu trabalho deve compreender, aproximadamente, 3 horas semanais dispendidas fora do contexto da sala de aula. Assim, e para além das tarefas exigidas pelo professor, o aluno deve também consultar, regularmente, e sob orientação do professor, outras fontes escritas e orais, de modo a expandir vocabulário e capacidades de leitura e para permitir a constante exposição do aluno a materiais autênticos. Consolida-se, assim, uma verdadeira reflexão crítica sobre os media de língua inglesa, bem como a autonomia receptiva e produtiva do aluno.

5 Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the objectives of the curricular unit The main objective of this subject is to develop autonomy and linguistic awareness about the English-language media so as to provide students with the skills to use English receptively and productively in real-life activities. The teaching methodology therefore aims at extending students vocabulary and reading skills, with particular attention to media and culture-related themes, by means of a continuous exposure of students to English-language media through course work and selected materials related to media text and discourse. The teaching methodology therefore follows a communicative-based approach aiming at promoting and assessing students receptive skills (by means of reading comprehension activities in written tests) as well as their oral and written productive skills (written argumentative texts as requested for the portfolio and final test, oral presentations in class, participation in class). These assessment items aim at developing students language awareness in order to aid them to express opinions on a range of media and current affairs themes. All English I coursework and written tests place a strong emphasis on critical thinking when analysing current affairs and English-language media. As part of the course requirements, students are also informed that they will be expected to spend approximately 3 hours per week studying outside the classroom in order for the main objectives to be attained and for achieving successful marks. In addition to completing work set by the teacher, students will also be expected to consult other sources of English on a regular basis in order to develop both their vocabulary and reading skills, under their teacher s supervision. This will also help to consolidate students productive and receptive skills. 10.
