Objectivos: 1. Consolidar os conhecimentos linguísticos adquiridos em Língua Inglesa I, procurando-se reforçar estruturas gramaticais de nível intermédio-avançado de modo a facilitar a introdução de elementos mais sofisticados da gramática e sintaxe da língua inglesa. 2. Desenvolver vocabulário relacionado com os temas descritos nos conteúdos programáticos da disciplina e incentivar os alunos a elaborar glossários sobre temas de interesse. 3. Expor os alunos a um leque variado de textos, de modo a desenvolver a leitura crítica, a prática de escrita argumentativa e a redacção de cartas/relatórios formais. 4. Trabalhar a técnica da apresentação oral em inglês. 5. Ensinar os alunos a transformar o portefólio linguístico num instrumento de aprendizagem contínua.

2 Learning outcomes of the curricular unit Students should finish the course as independent users of English at Level B2.2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Objectives: 1. To consolidate linguistic skills acquired in English Language I, focusing on intermediateadvanced grammar structures with a view to introducing more sophisticated elements of grammar and syntax. 2. To develop vocabulary related to the main thematic areas of the course and encourage students to draw up glossaries on specific topics. 3. To expose students to a wide range of texts, helping to develop critical reading skills, argumentative writing and drafting of formal letters and reports. 4. To improve oral presentation skills. 5. Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da unidade curricular Os conteúdos programáticos elencados supra visam alicerçar a aquisição das competências orais, de leitura e de escrita propostas. Assim, as quatro áreas temáticas indicadas servirão de base à consolidação dos objectivos/competências 2, 3, 4 e 5. A gramática (1-4) garantirá a consecução dos objectivos 1, 3, 4 e 5 (e concomitante competências). Especial atenção será dada às convenções empregues na redacção de cartas e relatórios. Demonstration of the coherence between the syllabus and the objectives of the curricular unit The syllabus listed above is intended to underpin the acquisition of the oral, reading and writing skills proposed. The four topics indicated in the syllabus will form the basis of the consolidation of objectives/ competences 2, 3, 4 and 5. Grammar points 1 to 4 guarantee that objectives/competences 1, 3, 4 and 5 will be met. Special attention will be given to the conventions used in letter writing and the drafting of reports. 8. Metodologia de ensino (avaliação incluída) Ensino: As aulas serão teórico-práticas, sendo os alunos incentivados a participar o mais possível para desenvolver a oralidade, competências auditivas e técnicas de argumentação/exposição de ideias. A abordagem é comunicativa e multidisciplinar. Procurar-se-á fazer o aluno entender a aprendizagem como uma actividade contínua, estendendo-se ao longo da vida, interpelando-o no sentido de criar um registo desse esforço, o portefólio. Avaliação: A avaliação é contínua e é composta pelos seguintes elementos: 1. Oralidade, incluindo apresentações orais e assiduidade participativa: 25% 2. Trabalhos escritos: 25% 3. Portefólio: 20% 4. Um teste no fim do semestre: 30% Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Teaching: Classes will be both theoretical and practical, and students will be encouraged to participate as much as possible in order to improve their oral fluency, their listening skills and ability to express viewpoints and ideas. A communicative and multidisciplinary approach will be adopted. Students will be encouraged to see learning as a continuous, lifelong process, and be called upon to create a portfolio, or record, of that effort. Evaluation: Continuous assessment will be used, divided up as follows:

Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A metodologia de ensino visa consolidar o trabalho feito em Língua Inglesa I: 1. A oralidade Para além de ser capaz de compreender uma exposição longa e palestras e até seguir partes mais complexas de argumentação, desde que o tema lhe seja relativamente familiar, o aluno deve conseguir compreender a maior parte das noticias que vê e ouve. Deve ainda ser capaz de conversar com a fluência e espontaneidade suficientes para tornar possível a interacção normal com falantes nativos, tomando parte activa em discussões que tenham lugar em contextos conhecidos e apresentando e defendendo os seus pontos de vista. Tendo em vista desenvolver a oralidade, através de apresentações orais e da assiduidade participativa (incluindo um prólogo diário de apresentação de temas da actualidade e 15 a 20 minutos de análise de textos de origem diversa), a metodologia da unidade curricular procura dar ampla oportunidade aos alunos para desenvolverem as suas competências orais, as quais serão postas em prática de forma mais estruturada nas apresentações orais. A produção do aluno no contexto das apresentações orais e das intervenções nas aulas deve revelar a capacidade de o aluno se exprimir de forma clara e detalhada sobre uma vasta gama de assuntos relacionados com os seus centros de interesse. O aluno deve ser capaz de explicar um ponto de vista sobre um dado assunto, apresentando as vantagens e desvantagens de diferentes opções. 2. A leitura e a escrita O aluno deve ser capaz de ler artigos e reportagens sobre assuntos contemporâneos em relação aos quais os autores adoptam determinadas atitudes ou pontos de vista particulares, bem como ser capaz de escrever um texto claro e pormenorizado sobre uma vasta gama de assuntos relacionados com os seus centros de interesse. Para além da análise diária de textos diversos, os trabalhos contidos no portefólio individual do aluno e os testes devem pôr em evidência o esforço do aluno para ir aperfeiçoando a sua capacidade de analisar textos literários contemporâneos em prosa, artigos e reportagens e redigir um texto expositivo, uma carta ou um relatório, transmitindo informação ou apresentando razões a favor ou contra um determinado ponto de vista. O portefólio incluirá os seguintes elementos, sujeitos a uma avaliação contínua: Um glossário (um Cronograma Lexical sera indicado pelo docente) Gramática Lista de erros frequentes Investigação e comentários sobre textos diversos Trabalho feito em sala de aula/testes Outras leituras/trabalhos escritos.

5 Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the objectives of the curricular unit The course methodology builds on the work done English Language I: 1. Listening and spoken interaction In addition to being able to understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument, provided the topic is reasonably familiar, students should also be able to understand most TV news and written press. Students should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible, taking an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining personal views. So as to improve oral skills, the methodology seeks, through oral presentations and class participation (including daily overviews of current affairs and 15 to 20 minute analyses of texts from different sources), to give students the opportunity to perfect their oral skills. These will be put to the test in a more structured form in the oral presentation component of the course. Oral presentations and class participation should indicate students ability to present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of topics related to their fields of interest. Students should be able to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. 2. Reading and writing Students should be able to read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems, in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints, as well as write a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their fields of interest. In addition to the texts studied in class, both the work in the individual student portfolio and the tests should show that students are working on developing a critical approach to contemporary literary prose, articles and reports and on how to write an essay, letter or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. The portfolio shall include the following minimum requirements, subject to continuous assessment: A glossary (a Vocabulary Work Plan will be provided by the teacher) Grammar My Common Mistakes Research and comments on various texts Classwork/tests Extra reading/writing. 10.
