The experiment hd fully rndomized design, with 12 tretments nd 8 replictions. The following tretments were pplied: Complete 1 (C1-fertilized with N, P, K, S, B, Cu, Zn nd liming s C nd Mg sources), complete 2 (Complete 1 liming with CSO 4.2H 2 O nd MgSO 4.7H 2 O s C nd Mg sources), C1-N, C1-P, C1-K, C1-S, C1-B, C1-Zn, C1- liming, C2-C, C2-Mg nd control. Dimeter nd height were mesured nd plnts were seprted into eril prt nd root system. Smples were dried, weighed nd levels of nutrients in the eril dry mtter were mesured. Phosphorus ws the most growth limiting fctor, the sequence of nutritionl requirements presented y Jcrndá d Bhi seedlings in reltion to the complete tretment ws: P > C > B > K > S > Zn > Mg > N. Keywords: Missing element; Dlergi nigr; rinforest; hrdwood. Resumo Crescimento e nutrição minerl de muds de jcrndá-d-hi so efeito d omissão de nutrientes. Com o ojetivo de vlir exigêncis nutricionis e os efeitos d omissão de nutrientes no desenvolvimento de muds de Jcrndá d Bhi (Dlergi nigr (Vellozo) Freire Allemo ex Benthm), conduziu-se um experimento com o uso d técnic de elemento fltnte. Form empregdos 12 trtmentos, em um delinemento inteirmente csulizdo com oito repetições. Adotrm-se os seguintes trtmentos: Completo 1 (dudo com N, P, K, S, B, Cu, Zn e clgem como fonte de C e Mg e corrigindo cidez do solo), completo 2 (completo 1 clgem tendo CSO 4.2H 2 O e MgSO 4.7H 2 O como fontes de C e Mg sem corrigir cidez do solo), C1-N, C1-P, C1- K, C1-S, C1-B, C1-Zn, C1-clgem, C2-C, C2-Mg e testemunh. However, it is known s one of the most thretened ones, eing considered conservtion hotspot, due to the high degree of endemism nd imminent extinction dngers (MYERS et l., 2000). 2 The species Dlergi nigr suffered intense exploittion in the pst nd ppers in the list of endngered species of the Brzilin Institute of Environment nd Renewle Nturl Resources (IBAMA, 1992), thus, extrction is now foridden, eing llowed only plnttion nd lter hrvesting. Due to this reson, it is extremely importnt to crete technologies in order to determine silviculturl prctices for this species. Severl studies highlighted the importnce of fertiliztion in ntive forest species s one of the spects involved with productivity nd qulity improvements, nd in success when estlishing forest plnttions. A fst nd sfe tool in forest fertiliztion nd nutrition progrms is mking experiments in vse (PRITCHETT, 1979). A fst nd economic wy to perform studies on nutritionl requirements is the lcking nutrient technique, to mke qulittive ssessment of nutrient in soil. This technique consists in ssessing the development of species in greenhouse or in field, using complete tretment (with ll the necessry nutrients in not limiting or toxic doses) nd series of tretments where one nutrient t time is not ville to the plnt. It is simple nd sfe technique to identify nutritionl deficiencies. To void result influenced y deficiencies of other nutrients, sources of ll the other nutrients re dded to the tretment, in not toxic nor limiting doses (BRAGA et l., 1995). According to Chminde (1972), the lcking nutrient technique shows which re the nutrients with low vilility, the reltive importnce of this deficiency nd velocity of soil fertility reduction. According to Mlvolt (1980), it shows semi-quntittive reference of the fertilizing necessity. Scientific studies on nutritionl necessities of Jcrnd-d Bhi re t erly stge. However, severl studies hve een conducted on nutritionl requirements of forest species with wood production potentil, like Quin (Myroxylon peruiferum L.F.), Austrlin red cedr (Toon cilit M. Roem vr. ustrlis) nd cedr (Cedrel fissilis Vell.) (CARLOS et l., 2013, MORETTI et l., 2011, SOUZA et l., 2009). Dlergi nigr (Vellozo) Freire Allemo ex Benthm, commonly known s Jcrndá-d- Bhi, Jcrndá-Preto or Cviún, is tree species of the Fcee fmily, found in the Atlntic Forest region of Sn Polo, pssing y Mins Geris, Rio de Jneiro, Espirito Snto until reching Bhi. The species is 40 to 80 cm in dimeter, hs irregulr nd crooked trunk, height etween 15 nd 25 m. Its wood is modertely hevy, with density round 0.87g cm -3, very strong, with long nturl durility nd quite decortive. It is known worldwide, used for vrious pplictions, like luxury furniture, internl finish in civil construction, mchined prts nd musicl instruments minly in construction of pinofortes, mong others (LORENZI, 2002; CARVALHO, 1994; RIBEIRO et l., 2011). Considering the little knowledge on nutritionl requirements of Jcrndá-d-Bhi, this work hd the ojective to ssess the nutritionl condition nd the effect of nutrient retirements on growth of seedlings of the species. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study ws conducted in the greenhouse of the Forest Sciences Deprtment in the Federl University of Lvrs (UFLA). Red Ltosol ws used s sustrte, with low nturl fertility, collected in field close to Lvrs, MG, t 0.20 to 0.40 m depth. Mteril from the fertile lyer ws discrded not to influence the effects of the fertilizers used. Soil ws dried out nd sieved, with 10mm mesh size sieve nd then 4.5 dm 3 of soil were put into vses with 4.8 dm 3 cpcity. In the ftermth, liming ws performed, ccording to the designed tretments. During this process, limestone ws homogenized with soil. Strting from this point, wter ws dded nd soil humidity ws mintined round 60% of the Totl Pore Volume (TPV), ccording to the methodology descried y Freire et l. (1979) nd verified dily y weighing, reching the correct weight y dding deionized wter. Limestone ws left for twenty dys in incution to let it rect with soil. After this incution period, the other nutrient sources were dded ccording to the designed tretments. The corrective fctor used ws clcined dolomite limestone, micro pulverized, with 36% of CO, 14% Mg) (PRNT equl to 100%). In the C2 tretment, C nd Mg were supplied in form of CSO 4.2H 2 0 nd MgS0 4.7H 2 0, with the only scope to supply C nd Mg without chnging the other chrcteristics of soil. Doses of sources for tretments were clculted, when pertinent, meeting the sic fertilizing requirements (mg dm 3 ), ccording to Mlvolt, (1980), Alvrez, (1974), Pssos, (1994) nd Mrques et l. (2006): 180 of N, 300 of P, 150 of K, 150 of C, 50 of Mg, 40 of S, 1.33 of Cu, 0.81 of B nd 4 of Zn. The following slts p.. were used s sources: C(HPO 4 ) 2 H 2 O, KH 2 PO 4, KNO 3, KCl, NH 4 NO 3, (NH 2 )2CO, MgSO 4 7H 2 O, K 2 SO 4, NH 4 H 2 PO 4, H 3 PO 4, Mg(NO 3 ) 2 6H 2 O, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4, CSO 4 2H 2 O, H 3 BO 3, CuCl 2, ZnCl 2. Nitrogen nd Potssium, when pplied, were divided into 3 doses, first t plnting, one fter 30 dys nd the lst fter 60 dys. Tle 2. 4 With the ojective to prove the effect of fertiliztion, n nlysis of the nturl soil ws performed (control) together with the nlysis of the complete tretment (C1) (Tle 2). Texture ws determined (Densimeter method) ccording to Brzilin Agriculturl Reserch Corportion (Empres Brsileir de Pesquis Agropecuri) (EMBRAPA, 1997). Chemicl nlyses were conducted y the following methods, ph (H 2 O - Reltion 1:2.5); orgnic mtter (Method of WALKELY; BLACK, 1934); P nd K (HCl 0,05 mol L -1 + H 2 SO 4 0,025 mol L -1 ), ccording to Vettori (1969); C, Mg, Al nd H + Al (KCl 1 mol L -1 extrctor); Zn, Cu, Fe nd Mn (HCl 0,05 mol L -1 + H 2 SO 4 0,25 mol L -1 ) ccording to Viets Junior nd Lindsy (1973); S (C (H 2 PO 4 ). H ppm P), ccording to Tedesco et l. (1985); B (hot wter) ccording to description y Jckson (1970). Anlyses were conducted in the Lortory od Soil Fertility in the Federl University of Lvrs. Dlergi nigr seeds were collected in the Rio Doce Stte Prk, MG. After sieving, they were pre-germinted in BOD germintors in the lortory of forests seeds of DCF/UFLA, nd s the rootlet protruded, seeds were trnsferred to vses with tretments. The testing phse lsted six months. At the end, the experimentl units were disssemled, roots were seprted from soil y wshing with running wter, otining the complete nd individulized seedlings. Dimeter of neck (D) nd height (H) were mesured; height ws tken from ground level to the meristem of the picl gem of ech plnt. Plnts were seprted into eril prt nd root system, then tken to e dried in forced ir oven t 65 C, until reching constnt weight. Dry mtters were weighed otining vlues for eril prt dry mtter, root system dry mtter nd totl dry mtter. Reltive growth of dimeter, height, dry mtter of eril prt nd dry mtter of root system were clculted strting from collected dt, using the formul: RG = N G2 x100 where: RG: Reltive growth of the clculted vrile N: Vlue of the vrile in given tretment G2 : Vlue of the vrile in the complete tretment 2. With the vlues of height, dimeter nd with the dry weights of the root system, eril prt nd totl, the Dickson qulity index (DQI) of seedlings ws clculted (DICKSON et l., 1960), y the formul: DQI = TDM ( H D ) + (DMAP DMRS ) where : DQI : Dickson qulity index of seedlings, TDM: Totl dry mtter (g) H: Height of the plnt t the picl gem (cm) D: Dimeter of root collr (mm) DMAP: Dry mtter of the eril prt (g) DMRS: Dry mtter of the root system (g) Dry mtter of the eril prt (stem, leves nd petioles) ws grinded in Willey mill nd chemicl nlyses were conducted to determine totl nd ccumulted contents of N, P, K, S, C, Mg, B, Cu nd ZN, ccording to Srruge nd Hg (1974). Anlyses were mde in the lortory of plnt minerl nutrition in the Deprtment of Soil Sciences of UFLA. With dt of nutrient contents, ccumultion ws otined, eing clculted y the formul. 5 Dt were sumitted to Shpiro-Wilk nd Brtlett s tests, to verify the hypotheses of normlity nd homogeneity of vrinces. Once these hypotheses were confirmed, the test F-test ws pplied, through Anlysis of Vrince, nd then the Scott-Knott test t 5% of significnce, to compre mens etween tretments (GOMES, 1985), using the progrm Sisvr4.6 (FERREIRA, 2011). Grphs nd tles were otined using Microsoft EXCEL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Plnt growth Morphologicl chrcteristics like height, dimeter nd dry mtter production, rtio root/eril prt nd the Dickson Qulity Index (DQI) re presented in tle 3. For dimeter nd height (Tle 3 nd Figure 1), omission of P, C nd control, resulted in lower vlues, showing tht lck of these nutrients ws growth limiting fctor in seedlings of Jcrndá-d- Bhi. P is n element with key role in ll metolites relted to cquisition, storge nd use of energy: phosphte sugrs, phosphte denosisns, nuceotids nd nucleic cids, eing therefore nd essentil element for genome nd for cquisition of energy (EPSTEIN; BLOOM, 2004). Clcium is one of the most required elements during the vegettive phse of the plnt thn in the reproductive phse. It plys the structurl roles of enzymtic regultor nd secondry messenger; it is essentil to mintin structurl integrity of the cell wll nd memrnes, its lck cuses memrnes to llow dispersion of cytoplsm contents (MALAVOLTA, 2006). The highest vlues for dry mtter nd the gretest reltive growth in DMAP were found in tretments C1-N nd C2 (Tle 3 nd Figure 2), nd the gretest reltive growth in DMRS ws otined in tretments C1-N (Figure 2). Where the nitrogen fertiliztion ws pplied, men vlues of dry mtter were, in generl, lower thn in tretments without N. These results indicte the tendency to pply inocultion with rhizoi, which provides enough nitrogen to form high qulity seedlings. Similr result ws oserved in Andennther mcrocrp (Benth) Brenn seedlings, where rhizoi inocultion ws pplied nd different minerl nitrogen sources too, nd results showed tht the gretest growth ws where minerl fertiliztion ws not pplied. Authors comment tht these results my e due to nitrogen sources, ffecting nodule formtion nd development process nd proly to mmonium nitrte, which inhiited formtion of nodules (CHAVES et l., 2006). Sequence of nutrients tht most influenced growth of D. nigr seedlings compred to complete tretment C1, considering eril prt dry mtter production, in decresing order, were: P>C>S>K>B>Zn>Mg>N. The root/eril rtio prt for Jcrndá-d Bhi (Tle 3) shows tht this species gives priority to the root system. Resende et l, (1999), who showed liner growths in iomss nd diminution of the root/eril prt rtio with increse of phosphorus contents, comment tht they found reltively smll quntities of P in the plnts fter incution in soil, explining this fct with the strong fixtion of this element in the used soil, Drk-Red Ltosol, dystrophic nd clyey. Phosphorus is the most limiting nutrient to iomss productivity in tropicl soils, eing the most used for fertiliztion in Brzil due to nturl poorness of soils nd the strong interction of this nutrient with soil (RAIJ, 1991). The strongest Dickson qulity index of seedlings ws found in the tretment with omissions. N. Gomes (2001) cited tht the igger is Dickson qulity index, the etter is the qulity stndrd of seedlings. Minerl nutrition Contents of nutrients in dry mtter of eril prt of Jcrndá d Bhi seedlings were low depending on tretments with omission of ech nutrient (Tle 4). The ccumulted quntity (ccumultion) of nutrients in the dry mtter of the eril prt (DMAP) of Jcrndá d Bhi is presented in tle 5. Tle 4. 8 With the exception of tretment without phosphorus, which hd smller N content, ll the other tretments were similr. These contents re igger thn wht Moretti et l. (2011) found. These high vlues even with omission of N ppliction re relted to the fct tht the plnt performs symiosis with rhizoi in soil. The gretest N ccumultion occurred in the tretment C1 - N, this effect hppened to the igger DMAP resulted in this tretment. The lowest ccumultions re found in control, C1- P nd C1 - C tretments, results ligned with DMAP. Contents nd ccumultions re igger thn wht found y Moretti et l. (2011). The high vlues of ccumultion, even in sence of nitrogen ppliction, re due to the fct tht this species performs symioses with rhizoi in soil, presenting igger growth nd consequently greter ccumultion of nutrients in the DMAP. The lowest contents in phosphorous were found in tretments where there ws its omission, nd where there ws omission of oron nd liming, like in complete tretment 1. The lowest ccumultions of phosphorous were found in tretments with its omission, in liming omission nd in control. Asence of liming diminishes P vilility in soil, since increses its fixtion in soil, thus reducing content in tissues nd consequently the ccumulted content (LOPES et l., 1990). In minerl nutrition of plnts, phosphorous stnds out for its importnce in plnt metolism, eing present in vrious iochemicl ctivities, eing prt of DNA, RNA nd ATP, mong others (EPSTEIN; BLOOM, 2004), since its lck influences development of plnts. Contents of K in tissues were the sme for ll tretments (Tle 4), thus K ccumultions (Tle 5) depended on DMAP. Therefore, the gretest ccumultion ws found in C1-N tretment, nd the smllest ccumultions were found in control tretments nd with sence of phosphorous nd clcium, in other words, tissue sored similr contents in ech tretment, differing only in terms of reltive growth. This indictes tht this species is little demnding in potssium, eing thus efficient to grow nd sor nutrients in in soil conditions similr to the ones presented in this work (Tle 2). In other words, with 23 mg of potssium per dm 3 of soil, these results were found y Venturin et l., (2005), studying Cndei, which is nother little demnding species. The gretest ccumultion of C were found in DMAP of the tretment with omission of N, once this gve the gretest dry mss. Smllest ccumultions were found in tretments with sence of clcium nd liming, like in omission of phosphorous nd control. Tretment with sence of nitrogen ws the one tht presented the iggest Mg ccumultions, due to the igger quntity of dry mtter of the eril prt given y the tretment. The tretment with omission of potssium otined high content of Mg in the DMAP, possily due to reduction of ntgonism etween potssium nd Mg (MALAVOLTA et l., 1997). Sulfur contents in DMAP of Jcrndá d Bhi were equl for ll tretments. Results for ccumultion were similr to DMAP growth, eing the tretment with omission of nitrogen the one tht presented gretest ccumultion, while control, P nd C sence presented the lowest ccumultions. This shows tht quntity of sulfur in soil ws enough to stisfy plnt necessities. Vlues re similr to wht found y Souz et l. (2009) in complete tretments for Cedr. The gretest B contents were found in complete tretment 1. The iggest ccumultion of oron ws found in tretment with sence of N, the smllest contents were found in control nd sence of P. Zn ccumultion in the plnt hppened in similr wy in the vrious tretments. Asence of N fvored the gretest ccumultion nd the smllest ccumultions resulted from control tretments, P, C nd liming sence. Tretment with P omission ws the one tht presented gretest Zn contents in dry mtter of the eril prt. The gret content of Zn in sence of P is due to reduction of non-competitive inhiition etween ions Zn 2+ nd H 2 PO 4 - (MALAVOLTA et l., 1997). CONCLUSIONS Results otined under the condition of this reserch llowed the following conclusions: Phosphorous is the most limiting nutrient to growth of Jcrndá d Bhi.
