Quixote, 2011, com trdução de Miguel Serrs Pereir), proporcion-nos um vigem em que etimologi e semântic se cruzm pr nos dr um noção de como, em diferentes língus europeis, o mesmo sentimento pode ssumir expressões que, n verdde, não são inteirmente correspondentes. Vejmos o que nos diz Kunder: O regresso, em grego, diz-se nostos. Algos signific sofrimento. A nostlgi é portnto o sofrimento cusdo pelo desejo instisfeito de regressr. Pr est noção fundmentl, mior prte dos europeus pode utilizr um plvr de origem greg (nostlgi) e lém disso outrs plvrs com rízes n su língu ncionl: nornz, dizem os espnhóis; sudde, dizem os portugueses. É um reflexão com que hoje quero deixr todos os que, tl como eu, prtilhm mgi ds plvrs, e tlvez, tmbém, nostlgi de um tempo muito, muito distnte, em que o trdutor er concedido o tempo necessário pr trduzir Dwelling on the word nostlgi, Miln Kunder, in his book Ignornce (D. Quixote, 2011, trnslted by Miguel Serrs Pereir), tkes us on journey in which etymology nd semntics intertwine to give us the notion of how, in different Europen lnguges, the sme sentiment cn tke on expressions tht, truth be told, re not perfect mtches. Let us quote Kunder: In Greek, nostos mens return. Algos mens suffering. Nostlgi is therefore suffering cused by the unstisfied desire to return. To express this fundmentl notion, most Europens cn use the word of Greek origin (nostlgi) nd beyond tht hve other words in their own ntionl lnguge: nornz, the Spnish sy; sudde, is the Portuguese expression. In ech lnguge these words hve different semntic connottion. Often they express only the sdness cused by the impossibility of returning to one s country. One of the oldest Europen lnguges, Icelndic, drws cler distinction between the two ides: söknudur: nostlgi in its generl sense; nd heimfr: pinful longing for one s country. The Czechs, s well s the word nostlgie deriving from Greek, hve their own noun for the notion, stesk, nd their own verb. The most moving expression of love in Czech is: stysk se mi po tobe: I feel nostlgi for you; I cnnot ber the pin of your bsence. In Spnish, nornz comes from the verb norr (to feel nostlgi), which comes from the Ctln word enyorr, derived in turn from the Ltin word ignorre (ignore). In this etymologic light, nostlgi ppers to be the suffering of ignornce. You re fr wy nd I don t know wht is hppening to you. My country is fr wy, nd I don t know wht is hppening there. Some lnguges find it somewht difficult to grpple with nostlgi: the French cn only express it through the noun of Greek origin (nostlgie) nd hve no verb for it; they cn sy je m ennuie de toi, but the verb s ennuyer is wek, cold nd is too light for such weighty sentiment. In this pondering, Kunder tckles one of the trnsltor s gret dilemms, in prticulr for literry trnsltors: the fct tht it is sometimes impossible to find the word tht mtches the notion the originl lnguge expresses. Em português In portuguese Crlos Cstilho Pis [professor universitário :: university professor] Em finis de gosto (30/08/2014), pude ler ns págins do jornl EXPRESSO um curto rtigo do Professor António Vz Crneiro sobre O uso de nglicismos n lingugem científic. Este rtigo constitui um respost um rtigo do Professor Gentil Mrtins, que defender um mior respeito pel língu portugues, insurgindose contr utilizção generlizd de nglicismos n lingugem biomédic, ns págins do mesmo jornl n semn nterior. Tl qul pude perceber, s posições destes professores não são, de modo lgum, extremds. Tmbém o Professor António Vz Crneiro se diz defensor d língu portugues ns publicções científics. No entnto, e é ess rzão de ser do seu rtigo, é su convicção «de que, em circunstâncis especiis e cuiddosmente selecionds, utilizção de nglicismos n lingugem científic é necessári». Seri necessário definir com clrez em que consistem esss circunstâncis especiis. Não se trt, por certo, de qulquer to d comunicção científic interncionl, pois, í, tudo ou quse tudo se process em inglês. O problem existe qundo o to comunictivo se process nível ncionl, pr flntes d língu portugues. De resto, como se sbe, só qundo o to comunictivo se process em língu portugues é que se pode flr com propriedde de nglicismo, se, por cso, nele existir expressão ingles. É neste contexto que devem ler-se s observções seguintes. Olhemos pr o princípio de tudo isto. Os conceitos científicos são universis e investigção científic que os nomei e divulg us o inglês. Segundo o Professor António Vz Crneiro, «os médicos e outros profissionis de súde estão constntemente ler em inglês». Por isso, continu o Professor, «prece rzoável ceitr lguns nglicismos». As premisss são incontestáveis; já conclusão o é menos, se for ssumid defes d língu portugues, em vez d purez linguístic (ingles) em que se express o conceito científico. Podem os profissionis d súde receber o conceito em língu ingles, podem, té, entre eles, discutir o conceito, que é um bo form de preensão e de profundmento; ms, em público, têm o dever de o colocr n língu portugues, exigindo-se, tmbém í, idêntic purez linguístic, que poderi e deveri ser objeto de discussão prévi entre eles. Será pedir muito? Será isto exigir muito? Ms defes d língu portugues obrig-nos ess exigênci. O fcilitismo não pode ceitr-se como cus d proliferção do nglicismo. Muito hveri dizer sobre o significdo d proliferção do nglicismo hoje em di. O português é um língu pobre, perde no confronto com outrs, é um língu pssdist; ms não é isso o que su históri no diz. E prov é que está viv. Ms, voltndo o ssunto, quero referir o ppel que os profissionis d súde podem desempenhr n trdução dos conceitos científicos. Qulquer trdutor sberá bter à port de qulquer Fculdde de Medicin pr esclrecer qulquer dúvid ou qulquer problem de trdução. A Fculdde sberá encminhá-lo pr o professor especilist d mtéri n qul se enqudr su dúvid ou o seu problem. O trdutor tem ess obrigção, pois tmbém ele deve trduzir pr um bom português. Pernte o seu problem, esgotdos outros meios de pesquis, se o trdutor não efetur o encontro com o especilist n mtéri, poderemos flr de negligênci. Do diálogo do trdutor com o professor especilist resultrá segurmente um melhor trdução, um trdução em português. É verdde que o mundo dá s sus volts. Certos nglicismos podem impor-se n língu portugues, como conteceu no pssdo. Ms que isso não conteç por negligênci noss, por mltrtrmos noss língu! At the end of August (30/08/2014) short rticle by Professor António Vz Crneiro ws published in the EXPRESSO newspper on the topic The use of Anglicisms in scientific lnguge. The rticle ws response to n rticle by Professor Gentil Mrtins, who hd rgued for greter respect for the Portuguese lnguge, protesting ginst the widespred use of Anglicisms in biomedicl jrgon, in the pges of the sme newspper the previous week. As fr s one could understnd, the positions of these professors were by no mens extreme. Professor António Vz Crneiro sid he is lso defender of the Portuguese lnguge in scientific publictions. Menwhile, nd this is reson behind his rticle, he is convinced tht in specil nd crefully selected circumstnces, the use of Anglicisms in scientific lnguge is necessry. These specil circumstnces must be clerly defined. He is certinly not referring to ny ct of interntionl scientific communiction, given tht these lwys tke plce in English. The problem is when the communiction tkes plce t ntionl level, for spekers of the Portuguese lnguge. Indeed, it only mkes sense tlking bout Anglicisms when the communiction is in Portuguese, nd the word exists in English. It is in these circumstnces tht the following observtions pply. We will look t the strt of ll of this. Scientific concepts re universl nd the scientific reserch tht nmes them nd discloses them is in English. According to Professor António Vz Crneiro, doctors nd other helth professionls re constntly reding in English. Tht is why, continues the Professor, it seems resonble to ccept some Anglicisms. The premises cnnot be rgued with; but the conclusion cn, if one rgues for the defence of the Portuguese lnguge, insted of the linguistic purity (English) in which the scientific concept is expressed. Helth professionls cn receive the concept in the English lnguge, they cn even discuss the concept mong one nother, which is good wy of pprehending nd deepening their knowledge bout it; but in public they hve the duty to put it into Portuguese, demnding n identicl linguistic purity there, which could nd should be the subject of prior discussion mong them. Is this sking too much? Is this demnding too much? The defence of the Portuguese lnguge forces us to mke this demnd. Tking the esy route is n uncceptble reson behind the prolifertion of Anglicism. There is much to sy bout wht the prolifertion of Anglicism mens tody. Portuguese is wek lnguge; it loses out in opposition ginst others, it is n outmoded lnguge; but this is not wht its history sys. And the proof is live nd kicking. But, getting bck to the subject, I wnt to refer to the role helth professionls cn ply in the trnsltion of scientific concepts. Any trnsltor cn knock on the door of Medicl School to clrify ny doubt or ny trnsltion problem. The school will duly direct the trnsltor to the specilised professor in the mtter. The trnsltor hs this obligtion, becuse he too hs to trnslte into good Portuguese. Fced with this problem, hving exhusted other venues of reserch, if the trnsltor does not rrnge meeting with the specilist in the mtter, we cn tlk bout negligence. The tlk between the trnsltor nd the specilist will certinly result in better trnsltion, trnsltion in Portuguese. It s true tht the world continues to rotte. Certin Anglicisms my impose themselves on the Portuguese lnguge, s hs hppened in the pst.
