2 Welcome to Lesson 1 of Story Time for Portuguese Story Time is a program designed for students who have already taken high school or college courses or students who have completed other language programs. The alphabetical lessons, starting with Lesson A, are basic lessons for beginners of the Portuguese Language. If you would like some practice, please review the alphabetical lessons before continuing with Lesson 1. 4 The Portuguese language Português In Portuguese, there are many extra words when there is only one in English. One example is the word for American: Americano For male Americana For female Americanos For plural males Americanas For plural females Here is the word for Brazilian Brasileiro For male Brasileira For female Brasileiros For plural males Brasileiras For plural females Also, it is important to understand that a group of people or things is considered a male group if there is at least one male. So for example an American group of ten women and one man is masculine. Americanos Now the expression, A little or a bit Um pouco

5 In Portuguese, each verb, or action word, is subject to change depending on whom the word refers to. 6 Now the verb, To be Ser Infinitive form This verb is used to describe a permanent characteristic, such as being a woman, tall, Hispanic, etc. Eu sou americana Tu és brasileiro Você é americana Ele é americano Ela é americana Nós somos americanas Vós sois brasileiras Vocês são americanos Eles são americanos Elas são brasileiras I am American You are Brazilian informal You are American formal He is American She is American We are American You are Brazilian plural informal You are American plural formal They are American plural males They are Brazilian plural females Now the possessive adjective, My Meu used for single masculine object of possession Minha used for single feminine object of possession Meus used for multiple masculine objects of possession Minhas used for multiple feminine objects of possession

8 Let s begin a short story about a man named John who is visiting Brazil. He sees a person on the street and says, Hello Olá The person responds the same: Olá John is trying to grab someone s attention and says, Excuse me Com licença This actually means With Permission or With license Com licença If the person were a young lady he would say Excuse me Miss Com licença senhorita But if she were an older looking woman, John would address her as Ma am Senhora John tells an older woman, Excuse me Ma am Com licença senhora If John were trying to grab the attention of a man, he would call him Sir or Mister Senhor He says to a man, Excuse me Sir Com licença senhor Now to a young woman, Excuse me Miss Com licença senhorita She would respond in one of many different ways, one of which could be Yes, sir? Sim, senhor? He would like to try to converse with her in English.

9 He asks her, Do you understand English? Tu entendes inglês? This is the informal way of saying this expression. A more proper way to address a stranger is: Você entende inglês? The phrase, Do you understand? Você entende? this is formal Tu entendes? this is informal In English, we use the auxiliary verb do. In Portuguese, there is no equivalent and therefore omitted. Do you understand? Você entende? Tu entendes? The word English in Portuguese is: Inglês Do you understand English? Você entende inglês? Tu entendes inglês? John tells a man, Excuse me Sir Com licença senhor Excuse me sir do you understand English? Com licença senhor você entende inglês? Com licença tu entendes inglês? Remember that Senhor Senhora and Senhorita are omitted when addressing someone as Tu

10 If the Brazilian man does not know English, he would say, No Não The man could say, I don t understand English Eu não entendo inglês The word for I here is not always needed. Não entendo inglês In Portuguese, the personal pronouns, Eu Tu Você Ele Ela Nós Vós Vocês Eles and Elas are normally dropped unless you want to add emphasis. John says, I don t understand Portuguese Eu não entendo português Não entendo português If John were fluent, he would say, Yes, I understand Portuguese. Sim, eu entendo português Sim, entendo português Let s assume John is with his wife Mary. Mary says, We Nós We don t understand Nós não entendemos We don t understand Portuguese Nós não entendemos português Remember, the words for I and You are normally not needed Mary tells the Brazilian person, I am Eu sou

11 I am American. Eu sou americana. Sou americana. She says, I understand Portuguese Eu entendo português but mas a little or a little bit um pouco I understand Portuguese but a little Eu entendo português mas um pouco She says, I am American Eu sou americana John says, I am American Eu sou americano Remember that in Portuguese, there is masculine, americano and feminine, americana. Let s assume Mary and John approach a Brazilian couple. Mary says to them, Excuse me Com licença She asks, Do you understand? Vós entendeis? This is the informal way of saying this expression. A more proper way to address a group of two or more strangers is: Vocês entendem?

12 Do you understand English? Vocês entendem inglês? this is formal Vós entendeis inglês? this is informal She says, I understand Portuguese Eu entendo português but a little. mas um pouco. We understand Portuguese Nós entendemos português We understand Portuguese a little Nós entendemos português um pouco Mary asks the couple again, Do you understand English? Vocês entendem inglês? Vós entendeis inglês? The couple replies, Yes, we understand English Sim, nós entendemos inglês They ask Mary & John, Are you? Vocês são? Vós sois? Are you American? Vocês são americanos? Vós sois americanos?

13 They say, You are not Brazilian Vocês não são brasileiros Vós não sois brasileiros Mary replies, I am not Brazilian Eu não sou brasileira I am American Eu sou americana. Speaking about John, she says, He is American Ele é americano and I am American e eu sou americana She introduces herself. She says, My name Meu nome My name is Mary. Meu nome é Maria. Our names Nossos nomes Our names are Nossos nomes são Mary & John. Maria e João. Our names are Mary & John Nossos nomes são Maria e João Notice that you use, são when referring to the names, since it is considered 3rd person plural.

We understand Portuguese Nós entendemos português but a little mas um pouco The Brazilian man replies, I am NOT American Eu não sou americano Não sou americano but I understand English. mas eu entendo inglês mas entendo inglês We are NOT American Nós não somos americanos Não somos americanos but we understand English mas nós entendemos inglês mas entendemos inglês

15 Let s try another introduction. John and Mary are in Brazil. They approach a couple and John says, Hello, my name is John Olá, meu nome é João My name Meu nome He now says, Our names are Mary & John. Nossos nomes são Maria e João Portuguese speaking people have another way of telling you their name. We will discuss this in a future lesson. John says, I am American Eu sou americano. Speaking about his wife, he says, and she is American. e ela é americana. We are American. Nós somos americanos. John asks the woman of the couple, Do you understand English? Vocês entendem inglês? Vós entendeis inglês? Are you a Brazilian? Você é brasileira? Tu és brasileira? I am American Eu sou americano and I understand Portuguese a little e eu entendo português um pouco

16 Now John asks both the man and the woman, Do you understand English? Vocês entendem inglês? Vós entendeis inglês? Are you Brazilian? Vocês são brasileiros? Vós sois brasileiros? The Brazilian woman responds, Yes sir Sim senhor Yes, I understand English Sim, eu entendo inglês We understand English Nós entendemos inglês but a little mas um pouco We are Brazilian Somos brasileiros John says to her, I am American but I understand Portuguese a little Eu sou americano mas eu entendo português um pouco Sou americano mas entendo português um pouco We are American but we understand Portuguese a little Nós somos americanos mas nós entendemos português um pouco Somos americanos mas entendemos português um pouco Mary wants to introduce herself to the couple.

17 She says to the Brazilian man, Hello Sir, my name is Mary Olá senhor, meu nome é Maria and I am American e eu sou americana I am American and I understand Portuguese Eu sou americana e eu entendo português but I understand a little mas entendo um pouco Speaking about herself and John, she says, We understand Portuguese a little Nós entendemos português um pouco We are American Somos americanos Now Mary asks the couple, Do you understand? Vocês entendem? Vós entendeis? Do you understand English? Vocês entendem inglês? Vós entendeis inglês? Are you? Vocês são? Vós sois? Are you Brazilian? Vocês são brasileiros? Vós sois brasileiros?

Você entende inglês? Tu entendes inglês? The Brazilian man replies, No ma am Não senhora No ma am, I do not understand English Não senhora, não entendo inglês
