1 1.Nome da unidade curricular Literatura Inglesa dos séculos XVIII e XIX 2.Ciclo de estudos 1º 3.Docente responsável e respectivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular (preencher o nome completo) Maria Isabel dos Santos Sampaio Vieira Barbudo 60 h 4.Outros docentes e respectivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular 5.Objectivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências a desenvolver pelos estudantes) Os objectivos consistem na aquisição de conhecimentos relativos ao surto do romance inglês no século XVIII, bem como à importância da poesia no período do Romantismo, ou seja, na segunda metade desse século e no início do século XIX. No que respeita à produção literária na Era Vitoriana, a ênfase recai na evolução do romance, à luz da influência das sucessivas tendências estéticas que vão sendo dominantes e que moldam a sua configuração temática e formal. A esse propósito refere se e caracteriza se o Romantismo, o Realismo, o Esteticismo e o Decadentismo finissecular. O estudo dos textos do programa, ilustrativos das referidas fases, permite desenvolver a capacidade de análise crítica de poemas e textos narrativos, contextualizando os respectivos autores na sua época e tendo em atenção as tendências estéticas dominantes. 5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit The purpose of this unit is to acquire knowledge about the emergence of the English novel in the 18 th century, and also about the importance of poetry in the Romantic period, that is, in the second half of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19 th century. As to the literary production in the Victorian Era, the emphasis is on the development of the novel, having in mind the diverse aesthetic tendencies which become dominant and mould its thematic and formal configuration. For that purpose, it is necessary to characterize movements and tendencies like Romanticism, Realism, Aestheticism and fin de siècle Decadence. The study of the texts of the programme allows for the development of the capacity for critical analysis of poems and narrative, contextualizing the authors in their epochs and having also in mind the main aesthetic tendencies. 6.Conteúdos programáticos A Era Augustana e a emergência do romance moderno em Inglaterra. Analysis of The Picture of Dorian Gray. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A análise do romance de Daniel Defoe permite compreender o contexto da emergência do romance moderno em Inglaterra, na chamada Era Augustana. A transição para o Romantismo em finais do séc. XVIII é vista à luz das premissas teóricas expostas no Prefácio de Lyrical Ballads de William Wordsworth e na correspondência de John Keats, representando respectivamente a 1ª e a 2ª gerações de românticos, a que se segue a análise de poemas

3 ilustrativos da sua praxis poética. No século XIX, mais propriamente na chamada Era Vitoriana, destaca se a evolução do romance que, numa primeira fase, concilia vestígios românticos com uma técnica já de contornos realistas. É o caso de Wuthering Heights de Emily Brontë. Em meados do século o Realismo está representado na obra de Charles Dickens Great Expectations. Em finais do século, o Esteticismo e o Decadentismo estão paradigmaticamente ilustrados no romance de Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The analysis of Daniel Defoe s novel contributes to the acquisition of notions concerning the emergence of the novel in England in the so called Augustan Age. The transition to Romanticism by the end of the 18 th century is studied having in mind the theoretical positions exposed in the Preface to Lyrical Ballads by William Wordsworth and in the letters by John Keats, representing the first and the second generations respectively, this being followed by the analysis of poems which illustrate their poetical praxis. In the 19 th century, namely in the Victorian Age, the emphasis is on the development of the novel, which in a first phase conciliates romantic features with a realistic technique. This is the case of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. By the middle of the century Realism is represented in Charles Dickens s novel Great Expectations. In the so called fin de siècle, Aestheticism and Decadence are paradigmatically illustrated in Oscar Wilde s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) Antes da análise dos textos, procede se introduções teóricas, versando a definição de conceitos de periodização literária como Classicismo, Romantismo, Realismo e Decadentismo. Depois da contextualização de cada autor, analisam se os poemas e os textos narrativos do programa. Para a análise dos poemas, é necessário obter noções de prosódia (rima, métrica, configuração estrófica), bem como, no caso dos romances, noções relativas ao enredo, personagens e diálogo. A análise dos textos é sempre feita com a participação activa dos alunos, incluida na avaliação final de cada um. Para além das participações orais, a avaliação final inclui dois testes escritos feitos na aula, um a meio do semestre e o outro no fim. A média dos testes vale 80% e a participação oral 20%. 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Before the analysis of the texts, there are theoretical expositions, concerning the definition of concepts related to the literary periods, namely Classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Decadence. After the contextualization of each author, the poems and novels of the programme are analyzed. For the analysis of poems, it is necessary to be acquainted with notions of prosody (rhyme, meter, stanzas), as well as, in the case of the novels, with notions of plot, characters, dialogue. The analysis of the texts presupposes the active participation of the students, included in each student s final assessment. Besides the oral participations, the final assessment includes two written tests, one by the middle of the semester and the other at the end. The tests are worth 80% and the oral participations 20%.

4 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A metodologia adoptada permite que os alunos adquiram os instrumentos terminológicos e conceptuais necessários para a compreensão dos traços mais relevantes dos períodos literários incluidos no programa. Começando sempre por uma contextualização, procede se à definição das correntes e movimentos estéticos dominantes em cada período, relacionando os com o respectivo enquadramento ideológico e cultural. No caso da primeira obra do programa, ilustrativa do surgimento do romance moderno (novel) em Inglaterra, sublinha se a sua articulação com o capitalismo, o individualismo e a dissidência religiosa. Na transição para o Romantismo na segunda metade do século XVIII, o racionalismo da Era Augustana cede lugar ao idealismo filosófico, plasmado nas posições teóricas e na praxis das duas gerações de poetas ingleses. No século XIX, nomeadamente no período designado como Era Vitoriana, acompanha se a proliferação do romance, que se desenvolve em consonância com as tendências estéticas dominantes e com o contexto cultural e ideológico das diferentes fases do vitorianismo. Os três romances do programa que cronologicamente se inserem no século XIX são exemplos paradigmáticos dessas tendências, sendo possível analisá los numa perspectiva comparatista e tendo em conta a dimensão temática e a respectiva estrutura. A análise dos textos escolhidos como representantes de cada período permite obter uma noção concreta dos modelos estéticos e das temáticas adoptadas. Sendo feita nas aulas com a participação activa dos alunos, essa análise conduz a relevantes ilações dentro de uma perspectiva diacrónica, que relaciona os contextos culturais com a evolução da produção literária, nos diversos géneros representantes do modo lírico e do modo narrativo. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes The adopted methodology gives the students the terminological and conceptual instruments for the understanding of the most relevant features of the literary periods included in the programme. Always starting with a historical and cultural contextualization, there follows a definition of the movements and aesthetic tendencies which are dominant in each period, relating them to their respective cultural and ideological contexts. In the case of the first text of the programme, which illustrates the emergence of the novel in England, its articulation with capitalism, individualism and religious dissent is underlined. In the transition to Romanticism in the second half of the 18 th century, the rationalism of the Augustan Age gives place to philosophical idealism, as projected in the theoretical positions and in the poetical praxis of the two generations of Romantic poets. In the 19 th century, namely in the so called Victorian Age, there is the development of the novel, along with the dominant aesthetic tendencies and also with the cultural and ideological structures characteristic of the several phases of Victorianism. The three novels of the programme chronologically included in the 19 th century are paradigmatic examples of those tendencies, and it is possible to analyse them in a comparative perspective, having in mind their thematic dimension as well as their formal structure. The analysis of the texts chosen as representative of the different periods gives a concrete notion of the aesthetic models and of the adopted themes. Taking place in class with the active participation of the students, this analysis leads to relevant conclusions within a diachronic perspective, relating the
