Para tal, propõe-se apresentar um quadro de problemáticas fundadoras da nossa cultura ocidental, seja no contraste de perspectivas, seja numa noção de tradição, de herança e de actualidade. 5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit This unit aims to give a set of knowledge on the biggest cultural achievements of the ancient classical world, within their historical, political and social context, from the Minoician Period to Imperial Rome. Therefore, it acknowledges the greatest questions related to our culture, both by contrast and by underlining the tradition and heritage of our present reality. 6.Conteúdos programáticos 1. Diversidade cultural do mundo mediterrâneo. Os Poemas Homéricos e a Idade dos Heróis. A Ilíada e a aretê heróica. Ulisses e o sentido da viagem: imaginário, fantástico e quotidiano. A época arcaica: o homem, a sociedade e o sobrenatural.

2 2. Cultura e sociedade na Atenas do séc. V a.c. A Democracia Ateniense. Das guerras pérsicas ao apogeu de Atenas. Ésquilo e a ascensão da cultura ateniense. Sófocles e o apogeu da tragédia. Eurípides e a transformação cultural ateniense. 3. Expressões culturais na Roma do séc. I a.c. A geração de Augusto: dos finais da República romana ao nascimento do Principado. Mitos da fundação de Roma como ideário de um império. A Eneida e o seu significado político, cultural e literário. 6.Syllabus 1. Cultural diversity in the mediterranean world. Homeric poems and the age of heroes. The Iliad and the heroic arete. Odysseus and the voyage: the fantastic and the reality. The archaic age: men, society and the gods. 2. Culture and society in the 5th-cent BC Athens. The Athenian democracy. The Persian wars and the Athenian Empire. Aeschylus and the growth of the Athenian culture. Sophocles and tragedy. Euripides and the Athenian cultural transformation. 3. Culture in the 1st-cent BC Rome. Augustus: from the end of the Roman Republic to the beginings of the Empire. Roman myths and the Empire ideology. The Aeneid and its meaning. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Dado o vasto âmbito cronológico e cultural a que esta unidade se reporta, escolhemos focar-nos nos principais momentos históricos e culturais do mundo antigo. Ao centrar-se no mundo grego arcaico, no século V a. C e nos inícios do Império Romano, é possível mostrar e explorar uma clara evolução em termos culturais, políticos e sociais que serão a base da nossa cultura ocidental. Desta forma, o programa cobre a génese e evolução de conceitos fundamentais como: literatura, pensamento e discurso filosófico, religião, democracia, entre outras. Isto permite, não só que os estudantes compreendam as bases da cultura ocidental mas sobretudo que criem a capacidade de reconhecer paradigmas, fontes e referências no seu próprio mundo ou aplicadas a qualquer objecto de estudo a que se decidam dedicar, dentro do espectro da história, literaturas e culturas do mundo ocidental. Sendo uma unidade introdutória, o objectivo é oferecer uma visão panorâmica dos aspectos fundamentais da cultura clássica de forma a dar aos estudantes a capacidade de seguir qualquer objecto de estudo do seu interesse com uma rede de conhecimentos que lhes permita interpretar e repensar as realidades do seu mundo. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives Given the huge cultural and historical diversity of the period covered by this unit, we choose to focus on the main historical and cultural moments of the ancient world. By focusing on the Greek archaic world, the 5th century BC and the beginnings of Imperial Rome it is possible to show and explore a clear evolution, in cultural, political and social terms, that will be the basis of our cultural reality in the occidental world. This syllabus covers the origins and evolution of literature, philosophical thinking, religion, and democracy, among others. This allows the students not only to understand the origins of the occidental culture but also to develop the capacity to recognize paradigms, fonts and references in

3 their own world or any subject they choose to study within any culture, literature or history in the occidental world. Being an introductory unit, it aims to give a general overview in order to give the students the ability to pursue any subject of their interest with a framework of knowledge that will make them capable of interpret and rethink the realities of their own world. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) Aulas expositivas com participação dos alunos Avaliação: 1. Prova escrita presencial pontual. Avalia conhecimentos pontuais da primeira/segunda parte do programa (20-40% - a indicar conforme a turma). 2. Prova escrita presencial geral. Avalia aquisição de conhecimentos, competências e respostas críticas de todos os pontos do programa (40-60% - a indicar conforme a turma). 3.Participação, assiduidade, (trabalhos pontuais, fichas de leitura, resumos, apresentações )- (10-30% - a indicar conforme a turma). 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Expositive Classes with the participation of the students. Evaluation. 1. Test to evaluate the aquisition of basic knowledge (20-40%). 2. Exam to evaluate the basic skills required and the capacity of analysis of all the main topics of the unit. (40-60%) 3. Participation, papers, presentations. (10-30%) 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular (3000 caracteres, incluindo espaços) As aulas expositivas permitem abordar os principais temas e questões abrangidos pela unidade lectiva. A prova escrita pontual permite avaliar a aquisição de conhecimentos básicos, o exame avalia a aquisição de competências como a interpretação e a capacidade de análise crítica de um tópico bem como a capacidade de estabelecer relações entre situações culturais diversas. As apresentações e trabalhos permitem que os estudantes utilizem as competências adquiridas de forma a concentrarem-se em tópicos como recepção e herança de temas clássicos. Com esta metodologia é possível assegurar tanto a aquisição de conhecimentos básicos sobre a cultura clássica, bem como oferecer aos estudantes a capacidade de aplicar o conjunto de refentes e matrizes clássicos directamente a questões que poderão estar ligadas com a sua principal área de estudo. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes (3000 caracteres, incluindo espaços) The expositive classes allow to cover the main topics and questions covered by this unit. The test evaluates the aquisition of basic knowledge, the exam evaluates the aquisition of skills like interpretation, and critical analysis of a topic, as well as the capacity of making connections between different cultural situations. The presentations and paper allow the students to use the skills acquired in order to focus on different topics like reception and heritage. With this methodology it is possible to assure both the acquisition of the knowledge related to the classical culture, but also to give the student
