Discutir as dinâmicas de longa duração, bem como os momentos e contextos fundamentais das transformações das sociedades da África Subsariana do século XV ao século XX, dotando os estudantes dos necessários utensílios conceptuais. OA2. Compreender as conexões históricas dos mundos africanos entre si e nas suas articulações com os contextos atlântico e índico a partir do século XV OA3. Desenvolver a capacidade dos estudantes de analisar textos e recursos essenciais para a compreensão da história do continente africano, bem como para a sua apresentação oral e síntese crítica escrita. OA4. Iniciar os estudantes nas diferentes tipologias de fontes para a história de África, com destaque para as exigências no uso das fontes europeias OA5. Sensibilizar os alunos para as problemáticas da construção do saber histórico sobre África e do lugar deste saber nos processos de reconstrução política e social no continente.

2 5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit The unit has five main Learning Objectives (LO): LO1. Discuss the dynamics of longue durée, as well as turning points and contexts of transformation Sub-Saharan African societies have experienced from the fifteenth century to the twentieth century, providing students with the necessary conceptual framework. LO2. Understanding the historical connections between African worlds and between the latter and the Atlantic and Indian Worlds from the fifteenth century. LO3. Develop the students skills to analyze essential texts and resources to the understanding of African History, as well as for its oral presentation and written critique synthesis. LO4.Initiate students in the different types of sources for the history of Africa, especially the requirements in the use of European sources LO5. Raising awareness on the issues of construction of historical knowledge about Africa and about the role of this knowledge in the processes of political and social reconstruction in Africa 6.Conteúdos programáticos Conteúdos programáticos (CP) principais: CP1. O quadro geral histórico-geográfico africano e a problemática da periodização na história do continente. CP2. As dinâmicas económicas em África, o seu contributo na abertura dos caminhos e na construção do espaço Atlântico e Índico, e respetivos impactos no continente; CP3. O poder e a sociedade na organização dos espaços africanos (séculos XV a XIX): transformações e reconfigurações. CP4. Dinâmicas e processos de mudança política, económica, social e cultural em África sob o colonialismo moderno CP5. Das resistências às independências africanas. A complexa construção dos Estados e das nações na África contemporânea 6.Syllabus Main Program Contents (PC): PC1. The historical-geographical overview of Africa and the problems of periodization in the history of the continent. PC2. The economic dynamics in Africa, its role in the opening and building of atlantic and indian world and its impact on the continent;

3 PC3. Power and society in the organization of African spaces (15th-19th century): transformations and reconfigurations. CP4. Dynamic, political, economic, social and cultural change processes in Africa under the modern colonialism. CP5. From anti-colonial resistance to African independences. The complex construction of States and nations in contemporary Africa 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular O primeiro CP introduz temas e problemas metodológicos que serão aprofundados na exposição e análise específica dos restantes CP. A seleção dos temas e problemas a discutir nestes CP tem por fim dotar os alunos de conhecimentos fundados acerca de diversos processos históricos em África. O recurso à análise de fontes visa iniciar os alunos nos procedimentos metodológicos, complementando neste plano a diversidade teórica relativamente à abordagem da história (ou das histórias) de África (ou das Áfricas) nas épocas históricas em apreço. De posse de conhecimentos essenciais sobre a metodologia básica da crítica de fontes e a diversidade teórica acerca da história de África, os alunos poderão ser iniciados na reflexão acerca das condições de produção de um saber histórico acerca do continente africano (CP5). 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The first PC presents topics and methodological issues which are incorporated in the specific analysis developed in the remaining PC. The selection of topics and issues to discuss these CP aims to provide students with essential knowledge on the various historical processes in Africa. The analysis of primary sources aims to initiate students in the methodological procedures, complemented with the explanation of theoretical diversity into the approaches of the history (or histories) of Africa (or Africas) in the period in question. Armed with essential knowledge and initiated in the basic methodology of critical sources and theoretical diversity about the history of Africa, students can begin to construct their own ideas about the production conditions of a historical knowledge about the African continent (PC5).

4 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) As metodologias de ensino baseiam-se na exposição sistemática dos CP mas preveem igualmente a iniciação dos alunos na análise de fontes primárias, a discussão de textos e, eventualmente, pequenas apresentações, valorizando a participação dos estudantes na análise das fontes e da bibliografia. Os métodos de avaliação (AV) baseiam-se em três componentes e respetivas ponderações: AV1., a realização de dois testes presenciais (60 a 80%): AV2., eventualmente complementados com a apresentação de um trabalho de iniciação à investigação de fontes (até 20%); e, AV3., a participação nas aulas e a assiduidade (20%). 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) The teaching methods are based on the systematic exposition of CP but also provide for the initiation of students in the analysis of primary sources, discussion of texts and eventually short presentations, valuing the participation of students in the analysis of sources and bibliography. The evaluation methods (AV) are based on the following assignments: AV1., two written testes in class (60 a 80%); AV2., eventually supplemented with the oral presentation of a work of initiation to research sources (until 20%); AV3., participation in class debates (20%). 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular (3000 caracteres, incluindo espaços) As metodologias usadas nas aulas desde a exposição de conteúdos, de quadros teóricos e conceptuais até à análise de fontes em que se demanda a participação dos alunos deve permitir-lhes obter, por um lado, uma visão da história de África e, por outro, capacitá-los para discutir, com bases teóricas e metodológicas, vários temas específicos de História de África de acordo com as competências e capacidades exigíveis a alunos do 1º ciclo. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes (3000 caracteres, incluindo espaços) The methodologies used in class - from the explanation of contents, of theoretical perspectives and conceptual frameworks to the analysis of primary sources -, which
