Learning outcomes of the curricular unit This course aims at: Reading: students should be able to understand simple texts as well as articles/news on modern events, and descriptions of events and feelings Writing: students ought to be able to write reports and texts which clearly express their points of view; describe people and places;

2 Speaking: students can tell stories, recount past events, comment on films or books as well as explain their views Listening: students should be able to understand the main points in dialogues about topics they are familiar with as well as news reports or other TV broadcasts 6.Conteúdos programáticos Leitura: Vários artigos de jornais e revistas de diferentes países anglófonos serão seleccionados com o intuito de promover debates ao longo das sessões; Gramática: Tempos verbais; verbos modais; discurso indirecto; voz passiva; condicionais (primeiro, segundo e terceiro); phrasal verbs; Vocabulário: Vários exercícios directamente ligados a tópicos debatidos em aula. Syllabus Reading: Several newspaper and magazine articles from different English-speaking countries will be selected for in-class debates; Grammar: Verbs tenses; modal verbs; reported speech; passive voice; conditional structures (First, Second and Third); phrasal verbs; Vocabulary: various exercises on topics related to the debates held in-class. Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular O material seleccionado para o programa de Inglês B1.2 está directamente ligado, por um lado, aos objectivos estabelecidos pelo quadro europeu comum de referência para línguas e, por outro, com o nível de domínio da língua esperado no semestre seguinte (Inglês B2.1). Assim, ao selecionar uma série de textos retirados de jornais e revistas de vários países anglófonos pretende-se: dar a conhecer diferentes usos da língua inglesa; aumentar a capacidade de leitura e compreensão de texto; e promover a aquisição de vocabulário assim como a discussão de temas actuais. A gramática seleccionada irá cimentar e desenvolver o conhecimento de estruturas sintácticas e semânticas, permitindo aos alunos escrever textos mais extensos e sentirem-se mais confiantes quando comunicam verbalmente em inglês. Por

3 fim, os exercícios de vocabulário têm como objectivo complementar os restantes exercícios realizados em aula, permitindo uma aplicação prática do vocabulário usado nos textos seleccionados o que irá favorecer a sua utilização. Todos estes elementos visam contribuir para o maior domínio falado da língua. 7. Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The material selected for English B1.2 s syllabus is directly connected, on the one hand, to the goals established by the European Common Reference Framework for Languages and, on the other, to the level expected of students on the following English semester (English B2.1). Therefore, by selecting various texts from different newspapers and magazines from Englishspeaking countries around the world, we aim to: raise awareness to the different uses of the English language; increase students reading and comprehension abilities; promote vocabulary acquisition as well as discuss current events. The selected grammar will strengthen and develop students knowledge of syntactic and semantic structures, allowing them to write more extensive texts and feel more at ease when speaking in English. Finally, the vocabulary exercises will complement the remaining exercises done in class, which will allow students to put into practice the vocabulary used in the selected set of texts and favour its use. All these elements aim to contribute to a greater mastery of the spoken language. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) O programa de B1.2 é centrado no desenvolvimento de vocabulário, aperfeiçoamento da fluência, discurso e compreensão escrita. A maioria do estudo será dividido entre trabalho feito em aula e em casa. Além de textos e notícias de jornais de língua inglesa, o programa irá incluir um romance (novel) a definir no início do semestre. Através da leitura de um texto mais extenso, os alunos irão melhorar o seu vocabulário, tornando-se mais cientes da linguagem adequada em contextos formais e informais. Visando desenvolver a fluência dos alunos serão realizadas sessões de discussão. Os alunos terão ainda de participar em apresentações orais sobre um tópico à sua escolha. Para melhorar o domínio de gramática serão realizados regularmente exercícios em aula através do uso do material disponibilizado no Course Book ou de material on-line. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) B1.2 programme is centred on vocabulary building as well as fluency, accuracy of speech and reading comprehension. Most of the workload is split between work done in class and at home. Besides longer texts and newspaper articles, B1.2 programme includes a novel, which will be announced in the first class. By reading longer storylines, students will improve their vocabulary, become more aware of the use of language in formal and informal situations and perfect their comprehension skills. To develop students speaking skills in-class speaking sessions will take place. In addition, students will participate in oral presentations on a topic of their choice. For grammar development purposes, in-class exercises will be done on a regular basis either through the use of material available in the Course Book or through material available on-line. Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Numa UC que se pretende ser de carácter prático a realização de exercícios escritos e orais irá permitir, por um lado, um maior domínio da língua inglesa e, por outro, fomentar a autoconfiança dos alunos. Tendo como objectivo desenvolver as capacidades de leitura e compreensão na sala de aula, iremos começar por ler textos de menor dimensão, como artigos de jornais, e passar para redações maiores, como um romance (novel). Pretende-se deste modo que os alunos desenvolvam de forma progressiva o seu conhecimento nestes dois campos. A leitura regular de textos oriundos de diversos países anglófonos permitirá ainda aos alunos ter contacto com as diferentes variantes do inglês no mundo, área que será complementada com o visionamento de filmes e a realização de exercícios auditivos. Os exercícios onde a turma terá de ouvir e completar mapas, esquemas e/ou frases, por sua vez, contribuirão para atingir outro dos objectivos desta UC que é precisamente aperfeiçoar a

5 compreensão auditiva. Almejasse assim que com estes exercícios, cuja dificuldade irá aumentar progressivamente, cada aluno consiga no final do semestre compreender os principais pontos em diálogos cujos tópicos lhe sejam familiares sem dificuldades. Para atingir este objectivo irão contribuir também a realização de debates, cujo propósito é duplo: melhorar a capacidade auditiva e consolidar a comunicação em inglês. Por fim, e tendo como propósito melhorar a compreensão escrita dos alunos, os quais deverão conseguir escrever pequenos textos onde expressem claramente os seus pontos-de-vista, irá estudar-se estruturação de parágrafos em sessões que começarão com uma breve introdução teórica, seguida por exercícios práticos. 9. Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes In a CU that is essentially practical in nature, in-class written and oral exercises will allow, on the one hand, a greater mastery of the English language, and, on the other hand, increase students self-confidence. One of this level s goals is to develop students reading and writing skills, which will be accomplished by first reading smaller texts, like newspaper articles, and then larger ones, like a novel. In doing so students are meant to develop their knowledge on both fields progressively. Furthermore, reading texts from different English-speaking countries will allow students to be in contact with the multiple variants of English, an area that will be complemented through watching films and listening to audio exercises. The exercises during which each TP will have to listen and complete maps, schemes and/or sentences will help reach another of this CU s goals: to perfect listening comprehension. Therefore, by completing these in-class exercises, which will also become progressively more difficult, each student ought to be able to understand the main points in dialogues about topics they have studied before without struggling. In-class debates will also help reach this goal, as their purpose is twofold: to improve students listening skills and encourage communication in English. Finally, aiming to improve students writing skills, since they should be able to write shorter texts where they clearly express their viewpoints, we will study paragraph writing in class, starting with a short theoretical introduction, followed by practical exercises.
