1 T E N T A T I V E C O U R S E S Y L L A B U S Accelerated Portuguese Language & Afro-Brazilian Cultures Taught in Salvador, Brazil---Summer 2019 PG 297 (2 units) Professor Naomi Pueo Wood, Spanish Department Coordination: Naomi Pueo Wood and Clara Ramos PG 297: Accelerated Portuguese Abroad (2 units) Students will participate in language study at one of two levels depending on prior coursework and the number of students enrolled in the program. This course will follow the CC Spanish and Portuguese Department methodological approach of teaching through the communicative method with an emphasis on contextual-based learning and cultural immersion. Through accelerated language study in the four modalities speaking, listening, reading, and writing and home stays with Brazilian families, students will acquire an intermediate- to advanced-level in Brazilian Portuguese. Prof. Wood will teach the intermediate-level while beginning-level students will work with instructors contracted in tandem with Clara Ramos. Students will meet four-five mornings a week for language instruction (depending on weekend field-trips) and will participate in guest lectures, workshops and visits to local sites to explore the strong Afro-diasporic identity of Salvador, Brazil. Course Description: Study of elementary Portuguese language and introduction to Afro-Brazilian cultures. This course will introduce students to beginning and intermediate grammar structures, regionally specific vocabulary, communication techniques, and cultural content from the northeast region of Brazil. This course emphasizes both linguistic and cultural competency and therefore requires that students employ their language skills to engage with cultural artefacts provided by the professor and supplemented by the students. Honor Code: Students are expected to read and understand the Honor Code System (HCS). Course Evaluation and Assignments: Short essays X 3 (5% each) 15% Final reflective essay 10% Tarefa: practice worksheets 15% Final Oral Presentation 5% Participation & Workshops 10% Quizzes X 3 (15% each) 45% Assignments: This course requires students to work within multiple learning modalities. Not only will students be expected to practice and gain grammatical competency and be tested with quizzes, but 1

2 students will also be required to practice writing, speaking and auditory skills, to be tested through short writing assignments and a scaffolded oral presentation. Participation: Class participation is defined by the student s active engagement in classroom activities and by the student s role in fostering an environment of learning for all course participants. It is expected that students will have read and reviewed course materials before class and will come prepared with questions. Essays: Students will write three short essays (½-1 page trabalhos escritos ). These assignments will be part of a writing process and will be workshopped in class. Students are expected to produce a draft of their writing on the assigned day and to thoughtfully critique their classmates work as part of the evaluation of the essay. Tarefa/Workbook. Students will be expected to complete workbook activities the night they are assigned. These exercises are designed to reinforce thematic and linguistic materials covered in class. Quizzes: Students will take three quizzes on the material of three-four chapters approximately every other week. These quizzes are designed to test language acquisition and to gauge student progress. Quizzes will contain listening comprehension, grammar review, a short reading, and a short essay. Evaluation will be focused on: listening comprehension, grammar usage, and writing. Presentations: During the last week of class, students will prepare a short presentation (10 mins. each) to share with the class. The topic of the presentation must be discussed with the professor ahead of class and should build off of, but should not repeat, cultural material covered in the textbook. Students may use one note card with vocabulary and key terms to supplement any creative or visual component. Students will be graded on creativity, fluency, organization, and ability to engage classmates. Final Reflective Essay: This essay should be thematic and incorporate 3-4 texts from throughout the program two of these must be from the critical readings packet, others may come from field trips, guest lecturers, workshops, etc. This essay will address one theme/topic and will include both personal reflection and critical engagement with the texts. It will be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced, 12 font.
