1 1.Nome da unidade curricular Aquisição da Linguagem: Tópicos em Sintaxe 2.Ciclo de estudos 2º 3.Docente responsável e respectivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular (preencher o nome completo) Ana Lúcia da Silva Dias Gonçalves dos Santos, 45S + 15OT 4.Outros docentes e respetivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular Objetivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências a desenvolver pelos estudantes) Na presente unidade curricular assumir se á uma perspetiva de análise comparada, conduzindo o aluno a: 1) compreender o que distingue a hipótese generativista de outras hipóteses sobre a aquisição das línguas 2) conhecer alguns dos temas centrais na investigação em aquisição da sintaxe de uma língua materna na perspetiva da Gramática Generativa (aquisição monolingue e bilingue, típica e atípica); 3) conhecer as principais metodologias de recolha e tratamento de dados no domínio da aquisição da sintaxe; 4) refletir sobre o modo como dados empíricos da aquisição podem contribuir para a discussão de problemas teóricos na análise linguística. 5. Learning outcomes of the curricular unit This unit will provide the students with the necessary conditions to: 1) understand what distinguishes the generative hypothesis about language acquisition from other hypotheses; 2) acquire knowledge on central topics in the field of L1 acquisition of syntax in the perspective of Generative Grammar (considering monolingual and bilingual acquisition, unimpaired and impaired acquisition); 3) discuss different methodological procedures used in the field of language acquisition; 4) recognize how acquisition data may be used as empirical evidence for the discussion of specific hypotheses in theoretical linguistics. 6.Conteúdos programáticos A. Perspetivas teóricas sobre aquisição das línguas e o modelo particular da Gramática Generativa: 1. a perspetiva generativista vs. a perspetiva behaviorista;

2 2. a perspetiva generativista vs. a perspetiva construtivista; 3. o debate atual e ainda o problema do conhecimento inato: a perspetiva generativista vs. a perspetiva usage based; 4. o papel do input e a perspetiva generativista. B. Temas centrais em aquisição da sintaxe: 1. ordem de palavras e direcionalidade; 2. ordem de palavras, movimento do verbo e estrutura da frase; 3. infinitivos raiz na aquisição típica e atípica; 4. sujeitos nulos nos primeiros estádios de aquisição; 5. aquisição de estruturas que envolvem movimento A na aquisição típica e atípica: alguns dados sobre relativas e clivadas; 6. aquisição de estruturas que envolvem movimento A: o caso da aquisição da passiva e de estruturas de elevação; 7. aquisição de elevação vs. controlo; C. Metodologias de trabalho em aquisição da sintaxe: produção espontânea e metodologias experimentais. 6.Syllabus A. Theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and the Generative Grammar model: 1. Generative hypothesis vs. Behaviorist hypothesis; 2. Generative hypothesis vs. Constructivist hypothesis; 3. The current debate and the problem of innate knowledge: the generative hypothesis vs. the usage based hypothesis; 4. The role of the input and the generative perspective. B. Central topics in acquisition of syntax: 1. Word order and directionality; 2. Word order, verb movement and functional structure; 3. Root infinitives in typical and atypical acquisition; 4. Null subjects in the first stages of L1 acquisition; 5. Acquisition of A movement in typical and atypical acquisition: relatives and clefts; 6. Acquisition of structures involving A movement: passive and raising; 7. Acquisition of raising vs. control; C. Methodologies in the study of the acquisition of syntax: spontaneous production and experimental methods.

3 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objetivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A discussão das diferentes hipóteses sobre aquisição (objetivo 1) será retomada ao longo do tratamento dos restantes tópicos. Em particular, a questão da discussão do papel do input na aquisição será particularmente articulada com a discussão da aquisição bilingue. Os tópicos centrais na investigação em aquisição de uma língua materna serão discutidos articulando o seu conhecimento com o conhecimento das metodologias associadas ao tratamento dos diferentes tópicos (objetivos 2 e 3). No estudo das várias estruturas, será referido o modo como dados empíricos da aquisição podem contribuir para a discussão de problemas teóricos na análise linguística (objetivo 4). 7. Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The initial discussion of different perspectives on language acquisition (learning outcome 1) will be later articulated with the treatment of the different aspects of the acquisition of syntax. In particular, the discussion concerning the role of input in language acquisition will be articulated with the discussion of particular problems of bilingual acquisition. The central research topics in the area of acquisition of syntax will be explored in articulation with the discussion of the methodologies associated to the treatment of those different topics (learning outcomes 2 and 3). The children s performance during the acquisition of each linguistic structure included in the syllabus will be seen as empirical evidence to discuss different theoretical analyses of the target system (learning outcome 4). 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) A metodologia de ensino a ser adotada inclui: (i) exposição de conteúdos por parte do docente (uso de apresentações em formato power point; uso de guiões); (ii) discussão, em aula, de artigos previamente lidos pelos alunos; (iii) realização de exercícios de leituras orientada; (iv) realização de pequenos exercícios de análise de dados e/ou construção de desenho experimental. A avaliação contempla os seguintes elementos obrigatórios: exercício escrito 50%; leituras orientadas e trabalhos práticos 50%. 8. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) The teaching methodology includes: (i) presentation of the topics in the syllabus by the teacher (power point presentations; handouts); (ii) discussion of papers previously read by the students; (iv) reading reports; (v) small assignments analysis of sets of empirical data and / or construction of experimental task. The evaluation will consider the following elements: written exam 50%; reading assignments and practical exercises 50%.

4 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objetivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular As escolhas metodológicas permitem atingir os objetivos de aprendizagem estipulados para a unidade curricular em foco. As sínteses por parte do docente conduzem os alunos à construção de conhecimento sobre os tópicos centrais na investigação em aquisição de uma língua materna. No entanto, e dada a subjetividade inerente a qualquer síntese, os alunos devem ler previamente alguns dos artigos discutidos em aula, no sentido de promover o espírito crítico e a consolidação dos conteúdos tratados. A descrição das estruturas trabalhadas em aula será baseada em conjuntos de dados do português e de outras línguas fornecidos aos alunos, treinando nos mesmos a capacidade de construir generalizações antes de estas serem formuladas pelos docentes. Nas várias modalidades de organização das aulas, serão apresentados estudos baseados em diferentes metodologias de recolha e de análise de dados, com vista à reflexão sobre os que melhor se adequam a diferentes questões ou objetivos de investigação. Para cada estrutura linguística estudada, é feita uma apresentação da(s) análise(s) presente(s) na literatura, mostrando se de que modo os dados empíricos da aquisição podem contribuir para a discussão de problemas teóricos na análise linguística. Sempre que relevante, serão feitas pontes com as questões específicas da aquisição bilingue e com percursos atípicos de desenvolvimento linguístico infantil (relações com a Linguística Clínica). Para tal, serão relatados estudos sobre as estruturas linguísticas contempladas no programa com base em dados de falantes com estas características (falantes bilingues; crianças com diferentes tipos de perturbação com consequências para a aquisição de língua materna). 9. Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes The teaching methodologies relate to the learning outcomes as follows. The summaries presented by the teacher lead the students to the acquisition of knowledge on central research topics in the field of L1 acquisition. However, given that summaries made by teachers are inherently subjective, students are asked to previously read some of the papers presented in the classroom, in order to promote a critical attitude and the setting of the new information. The description of the structures included in the syllabus will be based on sets of data from the acquisition of Portuguese or from the acquisition of other languages made available before or during the class this will train the ability to build generalizations over sets of empirical data before their presentation by the teacher. In the different types of classes during the semester, studies based on different methodological procedures and on different types of analyses will be presented; this will allow the discussion of the adequacy of different methodological procedures to specific research questions or research goals. For each linguistic structure explored during the semester, a presentation of the analyses proposed for the target system will be performed; the children s data will then be explored as arguments used for the discussion of these analyses. During the semester, specific aspects of bilingual acquisition will be explored; typical and atypical developmental paths will be compared (contributions to Clinical Linguistics). With this purpose in mind, studies based
