The Atlantic Rainforest is the second largest forest block in the Neotropics, which originally comprised more than 150 million ha in highly heterogeneous environmental conditions. In this study, we updated the list of amphibians and reptiles in the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), a conservation unit that is an Atlantic Rainforest remnant in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. Active and passive surveys were carried out weekly, from June 2008 to April 2009, respectively by searching different forest microenvironments and by using pitfall traps. We recorded 34 species of amphibians belonging to 10 families and 27 species of reptiles belonging to 17 families. This study adds three species of amphibians and 18 species of reptiles to previous surveys of the herpetofauna at the PEDI. The PEDI comprises a richness equivalent to 49% of the anurans and 32% of the reptiles recorded in the Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco State. This area makes up the group of urban protected areas in which the local herpetofauna has been inventoried, as well as isolated areas in the metropolitan region of the municipality of Recife. Regarding these urban areas, the PEDI Reserve comprises 38.7% of the local richness, being considered a wellmaintained remnant in an urban area. Thus, we highlight the need to invest in the conservation of urban forest fragments, given the significant richness that PEDI displays in relation to other extremely impoverished Atlantic Rainforest areas. Keywords: Amphibians, Conservation Unit, Pernambuco Endemism Center, reptiles Introduction The Atlantic Rainforest is the second largest forest block in the Neotropics (Galindo-Leal and Camera, 2003), which originally comprised more than 150 million hectares in highly heterogeneous environmental conditions (Ribeiro et al., 2009). This great heterogeneity favoured the high diversity and high endemism rate of this ecosystem (Silva and Casteleti, 2003). Atlantic Rainforest species are not randomly distributed, but occur in portions in at least six endemic centres, two of which are located north of the São Francisco River: the northeastern Wetland Forest brejos de altitude, and the Pernambuco Endemism Center (Silva and Casteleti, 2003; Carnaval and Moritz, 2007). The latter covers the Atlantic Rainforest located in the states of Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte, and is home to a diversity resulting from the influence of the biota from (1) the Amazon rainforest during the Neocene (Prance, 1982; Silva and Casteleti, 2003) and (2) the Atlantic Rainforest in the southeastern region of the country (Andrade-Lima, 1966; Cavalcanti, 2003). Ribeiro et al. (2009) estimated the reduction of the forest to 11.73% of its original coverage in Brazil, and, in the Pernambuco Endemism Center, this decrease is estimated at 12.1% (Carnaval et al., 2009). This is quite worrying, since the Pernambuco Endemism Center is considered a hotspot within the Atlantic Rainforest hotspot (Carnaval et al., 2009). Among the endangered Brazilian vertebrates, amphibians and reptiles are considered priorities for conservation, due to the number of threatened and/or poorly studied species, a fact most commonly observed in northeastern Brazil (Brooks and Rylands, 2003; Silvano and Segalla, 2005; Moura and Santos, 2011). Despite the increasing number of studies concerning herpetofauna in the Pernambuco State, data is still insufficient to support conservation measures in the Northeast region (Moura and Santos, 2011; Moura et al., 2011a; Moura et al., 2011b). Since primary data generated by fauna inventories make up one of the most important tools in conducting decisions on the management of natural areas (Silveira, 2010), we aimed to update the list of amphibians and reptiles in the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), a conservation unit in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil, in order to enhance our knowledge regarding the local herpetofauna. Materials and Methods This study was carried out at the Dois Irmãos State Park - PEDI ( S, W; Fig. 1), a conservation unit composed of an Atlantic Rainforest fragment, located in an urban area in the municipality of Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The park presents a main water basin called the Prata Basin, which forms three surface dams, namely the reservoirs of Prata, do Meio and Dois Irmãos (Moura et al., 2009). These dams are extremely important for the local dynamics and the development of several animal and plant groups (Ferreira et al., 2007; Santos and Silva, 1998; Moura-Junior et al., 2009). The climate in the region is AS type, classification of hot and humid areas, with an average annual temperature of 25.4ºC and an average annual rainfall of 2,457 mm; it is characterized

4 248 by the presence of autumn-winter rains between March and August and a well-defined dry season between September and February (Coutinho et al., 1998; INMET, 1998).The vegetation is characterized by the presence of the Atlantic Rainforest type Coastal Seasonal Evergreens (Machado et al., 1998), with a dense canopy tree layer of about 20 m high, sheltering vegetation in an advanced stage of regeneration (Silvestre et al., 1998; Silva and Vasconcelos, 2005; Melo and Furtado, 2006). Active and passive surveys were carried out weekly, from June 2008 to April Data from additional lists previously published in this area were also compiled here. Passive samples were taken from two lines of pitfall traps (Cechin and Martins, 2000), with each line consisting of a fence ten meters in length, with ten 60 L buckets at 10 m intervals and 50 cm high drift fences. The lines were set up close to the fragment centroid (Fig. 1). The active surveys were conducted up to 300 m from the lines, by searching different forest microenvironments, following the protocol reported by Heyer et al. (1994). The search occurred predominantly between 09:00 h and 11:00 h, totalling two sampling hours a day, completing ca. 88 hours of active sampling. The taxonomic nomenclature follows Costa and Bérnils (2015) for reptiles and Segalla et al. (2016) for amphibians, with modifications made by Dubois (2017). Results Sixty species of amphibians and reptiles were recorded in the field and/or compiled here: thirty-four species of amphibians belonging to 10 families (Fig. 2; Table 1) and 27 species of reptiles belonging to 17 families (Fig. 3; Table 2). This study adds three species of amphibians and 18 species of reptiles to previous surveys of the herpetofauna at the PEDI. The collected specimens were deposited in the Herpetological and Paleontological Collection of Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, municipality of Recife, Brazil (CHP-UFRPE; Appendix I). Discussion Santos and Silva (1998) listed 25 species of frogs for the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), while Moura et al. (2011a) added the caecilian Syphonops annulatus and Moura et al. (2011b) listed five species of lizards and Íris Virgínea Melo et al. four of snakes to the PEDI list. The anuran species added herein are Pristimantis ramagii, Adenomera gr. hylaedactyla (sensu Fouquet et al., 2013) and Proceratophrys renalis. We also present the second record of Frostius pernambucensis for the PEDI, 55 years after its description. Among the recorded species, thirteen are endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest: Scinax cretatus, Boana atlantica, Hylomantis granulosa, Dendropsophus decipiens, Dendropsophus elegans, Pristimantis ramagii, Proceratophrys renalis, Rhinella crucifer, Leptodactylus natalensis, Adenomera gr. hylaedactyla, Gastrotheca fissipes, Phyllodytes luteolus, and Frostius pernambucensis. Among amphibians, Hylomantis granulosa is listed in the Brazilian list of endangered species (MMA, but see IUCN classification, in which the species is classified as LC; Carnaval and Peixoto, 2004), and Pithecopus nordestinus, classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN (Angulo, 2016). Among the new records of squamates at PEDI are seven species of lizards (Dactyloa punctata, Norops fuscoauratus, Kentropyx calcarata, Ameiva ameiva, Salvator merianae, Dryadosaura nordestina and Brasiliscincus heathi), three amphisbaenids (Leposternum polystegum, Amphisbaena vermicularis and Amphisbaena alba), and three species of snakes (Amerotyphlops paucisquamus, Micrurus potyguara and Taeniophallus affinis), the latter being the first record for Pernambuco State (Freire and Silva, 2000; Loebmann, 2008). We also recorded for the first time on the area two Testudines (Phrynops tuberosus and Kinosternon scorpioides), and two crocodilians (Caiman latirostris and Paleosuchus palpebrosus). Five species of the lizards found here are endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest Biome: Coleodactylus meridionalis, Gymnodactylus darwinii, Strobilurus torquatus, Enyalius catenatus and Dryadosaura nordestina (Moura et al., 2011b). Among the snake fauna, Boa constrictor is listed in the appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, 2011). The Dois Irmãos State Park comprises a richness of anurans equivalent to 49% of all species recorded in the Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco State (Moura et al., 2011a). This expressive richness when compared to other Atlantic Rainforest areas in the state, in addition to the record of two species associated with forested areas (Frostius pernambucencis and Hylomantis granulosa), indicate that this fragment should be seen as a priority in the management and conservation of urban Atlantic Rainforest fragments. The PEDI reptiles account

Urban forests are related to various environmental aspects, such as retention and soil stabilization, erosion prevention, protection of water resources, maintenance of water temperature for the various species of fish and

8 252 other aquatic organisms, minimization of urban noise and integration into the urban landscape (Paiva and Gonçalves, 2002). Like almost all urban fragments, the PEDI area has undergone several changes to serve as a recreational area; nonetheless, these fragments are essential for their inhabiting fauna (Santin, 1999; Gazarini and Pedro, 2013; Domingos et al., 2013), allowing species survival and the development of ecological relationships among them. Together with the PEDI, the Botanical Garden (municipality of Recife), makes up the group of urban protected areas in which the local herpetofauna has been inventoried, as well as isolated areas in the metropolitan region of Recife, in the municipalities of Carpina and Garanhuns (Moura et al., 2011a; Moura et al., 2011b). Regarding these urban areas of Pernambuco State, the PEDI Reserve comprises 38.7% of the local richness, being considered a well-maintained remnant in an urban area. Thus, we highlight the need to invest in the conservation of urban forest fragments, given the significant richness that PEDI displays in relation to other extremely impoverished (Ribeiro et al., 2009), but extremely important (Carnaval et al., 2009) Atlantic Rainforest areas in Pernambuco State.
