1 Herpetology Notes, volume 9: (2016) (published online on 25 March 2016) First record of Scinax berthae (Anura: Hylidae) for the state of Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil Bruno Tayar Marinho do Nascimento1,*, Fábio Maffei1 and Reginaldo José Donatelli1 Scinax berthae (Barrio, 1962) is a small treefrog (less than 30 mm SVL) member of S. catharinae group (sensu Faivovich, 2002). Together with Scinax aromothyella it differs from many other species in this group, which are most commonly found inside the forest (Faivovich, 2005). Both usually occur in open areas around permanent or semipermanent water bodies, where males call perched on emerging herbaceous or marginal vegetation (Conte and Machado, 2005; Faivovich, 2005), below 1 meter height. The males call during the rainy season (October to February), especially at the beginning, usually associated with the first rains of the season (Vasconcelos and Rossa-Feres, 2005). However, in some locations the beginning of the breeding season takes place right at the end of the dry season (August and September), before the first rains (Maffei and Ubaid, 2014). According to Faivovich (2002), S. berthae is a highly variable species and a study to define the limits of this variation is sorely needed. It is a species with a wide distribution in northeastern Argentina, southern Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil (Frost, 2015). In Brazil, it has been recorded for the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo (see Table 1). The records from their southern distribution limit can be confused with Scinax aromothyella records because apparently some individuals cited by Langone and Prigioni (1988), Kwet and Di-Bernardo (1999) and Kwet (2001) now are assigned to the species S. aromothyella (see Faivovich, 2005). We report the first record of S. berthae for the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. On 28 February 2015 at about 22:00h, we collected one male of Scinax berthae (Figure 1) in Água Emendada Farm, municipality of Uberaba, State of Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil ( S, W, 945 m high) (Figure 2). The specimen was located on the edge of a large pond (400 x 140 m; Figure 3) on emerging grasses below Buriti bushes (Mauritia flexuosa). The individual was collected and deposited in the Coleção do Departamento de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo State, Brazil (DZSJRP 14715). Its vocalization was recorded and deposited in Fonoteca Neotropical Jacques Vielliard, associated with the Museu de Zoologia Adão José Cardoso at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil (FNJV 31946). MG). Until then, the northern limit of this species was the northwest region of São Paulo State (Provete et al., 2011). Our record extends the species distribution 250 km northeast (~200 km to the north and ~150 to the east) of Nova Itapirema, São Paulo State (Vasconcelos and Rossa-Feres, 2005). Despite being a typical species of Atlantic Forest, it was recorded either in the Pampa (Lipinski and Santos, 2014) and in the Cerrado, being

4 84 peripherally in the latter particularly in São Paulo state (Brasileiro et al., 2005; Maffei et al., 2011; Araujo et al., 2013) and the current record. This record contributes to the knowledge of anuran diversity of Minas Gerais state, which is extremely rich with more than 200 species, but knowledge of the group is still unsatisfactory, considering the different levels of information in distinct regions (Nascimento et al., 2009).
