2 PORT 052: INTERMEDIATE PORTUGUESE II Bem-vindos! Welcome to Intermediate Portuguese 2! COURSE DESCRIPTION: Portuguese 052 was designed to help you solidify your ability to carry a conversation, read, and write in Portuguese, one of the fastest growing languages in the world. The main goal of this course is communicative proficiency. In order and to achieve this, different approaches will be applied to help you master the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Considering that language and culture are interrelated, this program also incorporates a wide variety of resources such as readings, music, and videos to further enhance your knowledge of the cultural aspects of Brazil and other Lusophone nations. In addition to that, we will review and expand the grammar and vocabulary covered in Elementary Portuguese. This course assumes prior knowledge and some experience with Portuguese; therefore, classes will be conducted exclusively in Portuguese. Since I am a native of Brazil, emphasis will be given to Brazilian Portuguese. However, this should not prevent your ability to interact in different variants of the language. Whenever relevant, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar differences between the speech of Brazil and that of Portugal will be pointed out. COURSE GOALS: Upon completing this level, you should be able to confidently use Portuguese to: Interact orally with native speakers in social situations by exchanging information, supporting your opinion, and offering advice on topics such as work, school, recreation, family, particular interests and preferences; Read and understand a wider range of more complex forms of written communication, including but not limited to newspaper and magazine articles, simple literary work, websites, and specialized texts in your particular field of interest; Complete a variety of practical writing tasks, such as uncomplicated letters, detailed notes on familiar topics, and essays related to work or school activities, every day events and situations; Deepen your understanding of cultural aspects relative to Lusophone countries through accessing and interpreting various types of media in Portuguese REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Viajando através do alfabeto: A Reading and Writing Program for Intermediate to Advanced Portuguese by Clémence Jouët-Pastré and Patricia Isabel Sobral, 1 st Ed. 2010, Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co. EXPECTATIONS AND EVALUATIONS: Evaluation will be based on participation (further described in detail below), homework, and exams. Grading will be issued according to the standard UVM letter format and follow these guidelines:

3 Participation in class (attendance; being on time; having the required materials; actively participating in discussions, activities, oral presentations; and effort to communicate in Portuguese at all times): 30% Homework (planned or collected without prior notice): 30% Midterms: 10% each, for a total of 20% Final exam (written and oral): 20% of the final grade Participation is an important component of your grade: in addition to bringing the completed assignments and necessary class materials, being on time for classes and staying throughout the entire session, I expect students to actively interact with colleagues through dialogues, presentations, and discussions. For the same reason, students should not use computers or other mobile devices for activities unrelated to class. Remember, the main goal of this course is to allow you to effectively communicate in Portuguese, not in English. The use of English should be avoided. Courtesy towards your classmates is essential for an environment conducive to learning, therefore unrelated conversations should not be carried out during class. For the same reason, your cell phone must be turned off upon the beginning of class. Attendance is an absolute requirement for learning a foreign language with emphasis on verbal communication skills. The first three absences will not affect your grade, but the 4th, 5th, and 6th will decrease your overall grade (for example, on the 4 th unexcused absence a B will drop to a B-, and so on). Seven or more absences will prevent you from getting a passing grade. For this reason, if you have to miss class for religious celebrations or other justified absence (e.g., illness) you should notify me before the class session. You should plan on using your allowed absences for events such as slight illness, faulty alarms, late or early departures, etc. Unexcused and frequent tardiness may also negatively affect your participation grade. Homework is due on the next day of class, unless stated otherwise, and includes preparing in advance for the following class. ALL WRITTEN HOMEWORK should be neatly written in loose-leaf paper (no ripping off pages of your notebook to hand in, please!). I may at times collect and grade your homework without previous notice make sure to always bring homework on the date it is due. Some activities will include preparing oral presentations to be shared with your classmates. You should expect to devote at least two hours for each classroom session for completing your assignments and preparing for the following class. Late work will not be accepted, unless the student is facing extenuating circumstances and I am notified in advance. Please communicate with me if you have any issues that might interfere with your participation and performance in this course.
