6 Esta é mais uma das Publicações da Fundação Robinson que nasce no âmbito da Rede de Património que deverá, a pouco e pouco, enquadrar e valorizar o concelho de Portalegre. Desta vez o ponto de partida são as viaturas do Corpo de Bombeiros Privados da Fábrica Robinson e o automóvel Barahona em depósito e exposição no Museu Municipal. De cariz muito diferente, as primeiras laborais e de segurança fabril, a segunda mais de recreio, dão conta de tempos de coexistências de saberes técnico-sociais diversificados como os estudos denotam. A referência a estes dois estudos introdutórios e de chamada de atenção merece algumas palavras. Neles devemos salientar três tópicos que são muito evidentes nas preocupações da Fundação Robinson. São o resultado de estágios pedagógicos, no âmbito do Erasmus Mundus TPTI (Techniques, Patrimoine, Territoires de l industrie), ou seja, de investigadores muito jovens deste Segundo Ciclo da Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, da Università degli Studi di Padova e da Universidade de Évora, tutelados por um Professor responsável, e aqui é de agradecer a disponibilidade e interesse da Prof.ª Doutora Ana Cardoso de Matos (CIDEHUS-UE), e são o início de uma linha de envolvimento técnico-científico protocolado entre a Fundação e a Universidade de Évora que sabemos trará evidentes benefícios a ambas instituições e que, permito-me escrevê-lo, é uma primeira forma de alargamento regional da Rede de Património. Estamos certos que assim será. This is another of the Robinson Foundation Publications which has seen the light under the Heritage Network that will, little by little, contextualise and enhance the municipality of Portalegre. This time the starting point are the cars of the Private Fire Brigade of the Robinson Factory and the Barahona automobile which is kept and exhibited at the Municipal Museum. Very different in nature, with the former working vehicles for the factory s safety, the latter designed for leisure, they recount times in which varied social and technical knowledge co-existed, as the studies show. The reference to these two introductory studies and the drawing of attention to them deserve a few words. In them we should highlight three topics that are very evident in the concerns of the Robinson Foundation. They are the result of pedagogic internships, within the scope of the Erasmus Mundus TPTI (Techniques, Patrimoine, Territoires de l industrie), that is, young Masters researchers from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, the Università degli Studi di of Padova and the University of Évora, tutored by a responsible Lecturer - and here we wish to thank the availability and interest of Prof. Ana Cardoso de Matos (CIDEHUS-EU), and that this forms the beginning of technical and academic involvement between the Foundation and the University of Évora which we know will bring clear benefits to both institutions and which, if I may so write, is a first instance of the regional enlargement of the Heritage Network. We are certain that it will be so. 5

8 O progresso técnico-científico e o desenvolvimento fabril da sociedade industrial colocou à nossa disposição uma série de novas tecnologias e objectos, que modificaram profundamente o nosso quotidiano, bem como novos meios de transporte que alteraram a nossa mobilidade e a forma como nos passámos a relacionar com o espaço. Os dois casos analisados neste livro, a «Voiturette» de José Barahona e as viaturas dos Bombeiros Privativos da Fábrica Robinson de Portalegre, reflectem o que acima dissemos e são exemplificativos do alargamento do conceito de património, que passou a considerar que a patrimonialização se podia estender, também, a este tipo de bens, que marcaram um determinado período histórico, neste caso, uma determinada época da vida da cidade da Portalegre. No primeiro caso, o estudo permitiu demonstrar, que apesar de a cidade estar situada no interior do Alentejo, existia em Portalegre uma elite que acompanhava o progresso técnico que se verificava a nível a nacional e internacional. O segundo caso, ligado com a Fábrica Robinson, demonstra as preocupações com uma resposta eficaz à ameaça constante do fogo, que encontraria na planície de sobreiros que circundava a cidade e na cortiça existente na fábrica condições favoráveis ao seu desenvolvimento Sendo exemplificativas de aspectos da vida da cidade de Portalegre há mais de cem anos, era importante retirar do esquecimento tanto a «voiturette» de José Barahona, como as viaturas dos bombeiros, o que é conseguido pelos textos de Alexandre Ramos e Armando Quintas que apresentam de forma clara e interessante o contexto do seu surgimento e utilização e que, desta forma, dão um contributo para a preservação da memória da cidade. Scientific and technical progress, along with the manufacturing development of industrial society, have placed at our disposal a number of new technologies and objects that have profoundly altered our everyday lives, as well as new means of transportation which have altered our mobility and changed our way of relating to space. The two cases examined in this book, namely the Voiturette of José Barahona and the vehicles of the Private Fire -fighters of the Robinson Factory in Portalegre, enable reflection on what was said above and are examples of extending the concept of heritage, such that the idea of patrimony can also be extended to these types of assets, which marked a particular historical period - in this case, a particular time in the life of the city of Portalegre. In the first case, the study showed that, despite the city being located within the Alentejo, there was an elite in Portalegre accompanying the technical progress being witnessed at a national and international level. The second case, connected to the Robinson Factory, shows the concerns regarding an effective response to the constant threat of fire, ever present in both the oak plain which surrounded the city as well as the cork stored at the factory, which created the conditions necessary for this development. As these have been indicative of elements of the life of the city of Portalegre for over one hundred years, it was important to avoid both the voiturette of José Barahona and the fire-fighting vehicles being forgotten. This has been achieved through the texts of Alexandre Ramos and Armando Quintas which present, in a clear and interesting manner, the context of their emergence and use, and thus contribute to the preservation of the memory of the city. 7

10 Introdução Este estudo 1 tem como objecto o automóvel que se encontra no Museu Municipal de Portalegre. Segundo a tradição teria sido a primeira viatura do género a circular na cidade, contudo, a escassez de informações dificultou apurar a veracidade das fontes orais. A fim de colmatar esta carência de informação, levámos a cabo uma pesquisa que nos aproximasse da origem deste tipo de viaturas e do percurso da «Voiturette» de José Barahona, desde a fábrica até à sua chegada a Portalegre. Procurámos também determinar o valor patrimonial da «Voiturette» na esfera da historiografia da cidade e do pioneirismo da utilização deste tipo de transporte em Portugal. Introduction The object 1 of this study is the automobile which is to be found in the Municipal Museum of Portalegre. Tradition states that it was the first car of its kind to be driven around the city. However, lack of information has made it difficult to ascertain the veracity of such oral sources. To remedy this lack of information, research was carried out concerning the origin of such vehicles and the path José Barahona s Voiturette would have taken from the factory to its arrival in Portalegre. An attempt was also made to determine the patrimonial value of the Voiturette within context of the city s historiography and in terms of the pioneering use of this type of transport in Portugal. A afirmação do automóvel na viragem do século 2 Pierre Souvestre na sua Histoire de l Automobile de 1907, inicia a obra com uma frase emblemática de Roger Bacon: «Poderemos um dia construir carros que poderão ser postos em movimento sem o emprego da força ou da tracção de um cavalo ou qualquer outro animal» 3. Esta frase demonstra um pensamento, que não é mais, que o ponto de partida que originou a procura do ser humano pela sua progressiva autonomia face à força animal de modo facilitar a sua mobilidade. A comercialização em grande escala do automóvel para fins particulares, começa em França no ano de 1891 através da marca Panhard et Levassor, que inaugura a primeira fábrica de produção automóvel do mundo, sendo construtores de carroçarias equipadas com motores alemães Daimler. 4 Apesar desta indústria conhecer uma produção em grande escala em França, o automóvel nos moldes em como hoje o conhecemos deve a sua concepção ao engenho de três inventores alemães Gottileb Daimler ( ), Wilhelm Maybach ( ) e Karl Benz ( ), sendo que este último foi o único dos três a patentear o modelo. The rise of the Automobile at the turn of the Century 2 Pierre Souvestre started his 1907 work Histoire de l Automobile with an emblematic phrase by Roger Bacon: One day we shall be able to build cars which will be able to set off in motion without the use of force or the traction of a horse or any other animal 3. This sentence demonstrates a thought that is nothing but the starting point that led to human beings search to be gradually autonomous from animal power so as to facilitate their mobility. The large-scale commercialization of the car for private use was started in France in 1891 by the Panhard-et- Levassor make, which opened the first automobile manufacturing factory in the world, building car bodies fitted with German Daimler engines. 4 Despite this large-scale industrial production in France, the automobile in the form we know it today owes its conception to the ingenuity of three German inventors, Gottlieb Daimler ( ), Wilhelm Maybach ( ) and Karl Benz ( ), with the latter being the only one of the three to patent the model. 9

11 Por esta altura, estes motores eram ainda incomparavelmente mais fracos que os das viaturas a vapor e eléctricas 5 e, devido ao seu elevado preço e à sua manutenção complexa, apenas podiam ser adquiridos por membros da elite ou por sportsman. No entanto, o rápido desenvolvimento da indústria e as exigências do mercado, vão contribuir para o surgimento de motores de explosão cada vez mais potentes que permitirão a entrada destes no mercado das viaturas de transporte público e de mercadorias. A sua explosão comercial dá se nos anos pós Exposição Universal de Paris de 1900, na qual o automóvel surgiu como uma das principais atracções do evento e como símbolo do progresso da ciência. Nos anos posteriores, os automóveis e os motociclos vão se afirmando também como um símbolo de mobilidade individual, de afirmação social e de progresso técnico. É a conjugação destes elementos que explica que os pioneiros da utilização do automóvel em Portugal fossem invariavelmente grandes latifundiários, industriais, profissionais liberais e membros da nobreza. Estes últimos vão ter uma importância preponderante na introdução e desenvolvimento do seu uso. During this period, these engines were still incomparably weaker than those of steam and electric vehicles 5 and, due to their high price and complex maintenance, could only be purchased by members of the elite or sportsmen. However, the rapid development of the industry and market demand would contribute to the emergence of increasingly more powerful spark-ignition engines that allowed them to enter the market for public transport and goods vehicles. Their commercial explosion occurred in the years following the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, in which the car emerged as one of the main attractions of the event and as a symbol of scientific progress. In later years, cars and motorcycles would also affirm themselves as a symbol of individual mobility, social assertion and technical progress. It is the combination of these factors that explains why the pioneers of automobile use in Portugal were invariably large landowners, industrialists, liberal professionals and members of the nobility. Indeed, the latter would play a leading role in the introduction and development of its use. O automóvel em Portugal na viragem do século Nos anos que se seguiram à importação do primeiro automóvel regista se um aumento anual considerável de importação de automóveis, que se difundem um pouco por todo o país. Veja se o exemplo do Dr. Tavares Mello, residente em Coimbra, que em 1896 adquire um Peugeot equipado com um motor Panhard, licenciado pela Daimler 6. Também no Porto, deve se salientar o papel da casa João Garrido, que se vai afirmar como uma das primeiras casas importadoras de automóveis, e que, como tal, é uma referência obrigatória para o estudo dos transportes motorizados em Portugal. Em 1900 o número de automóveis importados ascendia a 13 e quatro anos depois elevava se já para The Automobile in Portugal at the turn of the Century In the years following the importation of the first automobile there was a considerable annual increase in car imports, which were spread a little all over the country. For example, Dr. Tavares Mello, from Coimbra, acquired a Peugeot fitted with a Panhard engine, licensed by Daimler in Furthermore, in Porto, the role of the João Garrido house should be noted, as it would become one of the first automobile importers, and as such an obligatory reference for the study of motorized transport in Portugal. In 1900 the number of imported cars totalled 13 and four years later had reached

12 A atestar também a crescente importância que o automóvel atinge no país, verifica se a criação do Real Automóvel Club de Portugal a 15 de Abril de 1903, impulsionada pela organização, em 1902, da primeira corrida automóvel na Península Ibérica, a prova Figueira da Foz Lisboa, ganha por D. Carlos num Fiat conduzido por um piloto francês. 8 O ano de 1903 marca também o fim da produção dos automóveis que se inscrevem a categoria dos «pioneiros» segundo a FIVA 9. A introdução deste novo tipo de transporte acarretou consigo um impulsionador económico, pois permitiu a abertura de novos estabelecimentos e a criação de uma nova indústria, bem como a entrada de novas fontes de rendimentos para o Estado, não só através dos impostos alfandegários, mas também através da cobrança de novos impostos, tais como, registo de propriedade sobre a viatura e os alvarás, utilização e circulação, que as novas legislações vão estabelecer. Podemos afirmar que em Portugal, entre 1895 e 1904, o automóvel rapidamente se popularizou e exerceu um crescente papel no sector económico. O proprietário, Dr. José de Barahona José de Barahona Caldeira Castel Branco, foi baptizado na freguesia da Sé, Portalegre, a 27 de Julho de 1865 vindo a falecer a 26 de Novembro de Foi Bacharel formado em Matemática, Engenheiro Civil e desempenhou o cargo de Procurador da Junta Geral do Distrito de Portalegre. Teve uma filha, Maria José Côrte Real Caldeira Castel Branco que casou com António Cary Potes Cordovil. 10 Era irmão de Francisco Barahona, nascido a 1864 também em Portalegre, fundador da sociedade «Portalegre Industrial», mais tarde designada por «Moagem de Portalegre», foi igualmente um dos sócios fundadores da fábrica de tecidos «Sedas de Portalegre» 11. Destacou se na administração da casa Agrí Also attesting to the growing importance that the automobile had reached in the country was the setting up of the Royal Automobile Club of Portugal on 15 April 1903, motivated by the organization in 1902 of the first automobile race in the Iberian Peninsula, the Figueira da Foz-Lisbon event, won by D. The introduction of this new type of transport was in itself an economic driver, as it led to the opening of new enterprises and the creation of a new industry, as well as the creation of new sources of revenue for the State, not only through customs duties, but also through the collection of new taxes, such as vehicle ownership registration and permits, use and circulation, which would be established through new laws. It can be stated that in Portugal, between 1895 and 1904, the car quickly became popular and played a growing role in the economic sector. The owner, Dr. José de Barahona José de Barahona Caldeira Castel-Branco was baptised in the parish of Sé, Portalegre, on 27 July 1865 and died on 26 November He did a Bachelor s degree in Mathematics, was a Civil Engineer and served as the Attorney General of the Board of the District of Portalegre. He had a daughter, Maria José Côrte-Real Caldeira Castel-Branco who married António Cary Potes Cordovil. 10 He was the brother of Francisco Barahona, born in 1864 in Portalegre as well, founder of the company Portalegre Industrial, later called Moagem (Milling) de Portalegre, and was also a founding partner of the textile factory Sedas de 11

13 cola Conde de S. Payo, onde «...ocupou a vanguarda nos modernos processo agrícolas...» 12. José de Barahona parece ter seguido o mesmo percurso do seu irmão Fernando que «fez os seus preparatórios em Portalegre, e depois Lisboa de onde seguiu para a Universidade de Coimbra a frequentar a Faculdade de Matemática...Seguidamente em Lisboa, obteve a carta de engenheiro Civil» 13. O estatuto e a influência na sociedade portalegrense dos dois irmãos, supõe se que fosse relevante, não só pelos pelas suas actividades profissionais e formação académica, mas também pela sua actividade política, visto que, por duas vezes, Francisco de Barahona assumiu o cargo da Presidência da Câmara Municipal. A juntar aos referidos factores acrescentamos o facto de pertencerem à elite local, a família residia num palácio no «...Largo Serpa Pinto, uma das casas nobres brasonadas desta cidade...» 14, edifício que hoje alberga o Arquivo Distrital de Portalegre. Não foi possível apurar, concretamente, o tipo de utilização dada à viatura, ou seja, se o proprietário a utilizava para fins desportivos, profissionais ou de lazer. Podemos, no entanto, adiantar que este não participou em nenhuma prova oficial de corridas automóveis 15, não sendo também provável que tenha sido utilizada para a sua actividade profissional, visto este exercer a sua profissão na cidade na qual habitava. A «voiturette» de José Barahona A «voiturette» 16 de José de Barahona foi comprada no ano de Possivelmente deu entrada no país no mesmo ano ou no ano de 1901, numa altura em que o número de viaturas ainda não chegava a meia centena de exemplares 17. A aquisição desta viatura acontece, inclusive, antes da realização das primeiras provas desportivas motorizadas e da fundação do Real Club Automóvel de Portugal. Em 1903, foi concedido a José de Barahona o alvará necessário para circulação e utilização da sua viatura. 18 Portalegre 11. He excelled in administering the Conde S. The status and influence of the two brothers in Portalegre society is assumed to have been important, not only due to their professional and academic activities, but also due to their political activity, given that Francisco de Barahona was Mayor of the City on two occasions. Along with these factors can be added the fact of belonging to the local elite. The family lived in a small palace at... Largo Serpa Pinto, one of the stately mansions of this city... 14, a building that now houses the Portalegre District Archive. It was not possible to specifically determine the type of use made of the vehicle, that is, if the owner used it for sporting, professional or leisure purposes. It can, however, be added that he did not participate in any official racing car event 15, nor is it likely to have been used for his professional activity, since he carried out his profession in the city in which he resided. José Barahona s voiturette José Barahona s voiturette 16 was purchased in It was possibly brought to Portugal in the same year or in 1901, at a time when there were less than fifty vehicles in the country 17. This vehicle was in fact purchased before the first motorized sporting events took place and the founding of the Royal Automobile Club of Portugal (Real Club A «voiturette» de José Barahona. 15 De salientar, que esta viatura contribuiu para a difusão deste meio de transporte na região do Alentejo, visto que a maioria dos automóveis que na altura existiam encontravam se nos grandes centros urbanos, como Lisboa, Porto e Coimbra. Outros dos aspectos a salientar é que Barahona seguiu a tendência nacional, ao adquirir uma viatura de origem francesa, um Clément. Para determinar a marca e modelo do automóvel adquirido em 1900 por José de Barahona, procurámos estabelecer o percurso da viatura desde a sua compra até chegar a Portalegre. A 16 de Agosto de 1900, José de Barahona, endossa um cheque no valor de 600 francos à empresa Clément, Gladiator & Humber, sita no número 18 da Rua Brunel em Paris, como forma de efectuar o pagamento de uma «voiturette». No mesmo ano emite à mesma empresa outro cheque 19, mas desta vez com o valor de 1000 francos, em ambos a quantia era especificada como «avance sur voiturette». Também no mesmo ano, a 24 de Agosto de 1900, Barahona escreve a Fernando Brederode: «Devendo dentro de poucos dias estar concluído um pequeno automóvel que mandei fazer em Paris, desejo saber se Vossa Ex. se encarrega de fazer transportar até Lisbôa pela via marítima os respectivos despachos na alfândega e quais as condições no caso afirmativo. Além do automóvel que será entregue pela fábrica convenientemente encaixotados deve vir também um caixote com peças de sobresselente. O peso dos dois caixotes não deverá exceder 200 libras creio eu. Espero o favor da sua resposta subscrevo V. Ex...». 20 Cremos que este Brederode era Fernando Teixeira de Homem Brederode, Bacharel em Filosofia pela Universidade de Coim Automóvel de Portugal). In addition to the automobile that will be delivered in a suitably packaged form, it should also be accompanied by a crate of spare parts. The weight of the two boxes should not exceed 200 pounds I believe. I look forward to hearing from you and remain yours truly

16 bra, com estudos feitos também na École de ponts et chaussées de Paris, fundador da companhia de seguros A Nacional, em 1906, e futuro ministro da Marinha e posteriormente do Comércio nos governos de António Maria da Silva, em 1920 e mais tarde em José de Barahona, segundo cremos, estava por este meio a contratar os serviços de uma companhia de transportes pertencente a Fernando Brederode para fazerem o transporte da viatura até Lisboa. 21 Quanto à presença do automóvel em Portalegre sabemos que é anterior a 26 de Maio de 1903, data dos dois alvarás concedidos pelo Governo Civil de Portalegre ao «Exmo. Dr. José de Barahona Caldeira Castel Branco». Sendo um «...alvará de licença, observadas, as disposições applicaveis, dos artigos 16, e seguintes do Decreto de 3, de ottubro, de 1901, autorizo, a circulação, de um automóvel = Voiturette = motor a gasolina, da força, de trez cavallos, de precedência francesa, pertencente, ao Exmo. Dr José de Barahona...» 22 e outro de licença, de acordo com os artigos 27 também do decreto de 3 de Outubro de 1901, concedido ao mesmo «... proprietário, engenheiro civil, residente no largo, de Serpa Pinto, freguesia da Sé, d esta cidade para guiar o seu automóvel. Voiturette, da força, de trez cavallos.» 23 Até esta altura o automóvel tinha já custado ao proprietário 1600 francos de «avance», 1600 réis pelos dois alvarás e «3.608 réis de emolumentos e imposto adicional, como consta da verba n.º 724, lançada na guia n.º1, em data de 27 de Novembro de 1903». 24 Através dos referidos documentos, podemos constatar que José de Barahona negociou directamente com a empresa constructora/vendedora e que ele próprio organizou o transporte do automóvel. 17 A marca e o modelo da «voiturette». O primeiro automóvel a circular em Portalegre? Para a determinação da marca e modelo do automóvel foi fundamental a inscrição, Clément, situada na parte dianteira, uma vez que, por esta altura, as carroçarias dos automóveis das várias marcas eram estranhamente semelhantes, podendo a mesma ser comum a várias marcas, diferenciando se apenas pelo motor e alguns pequenos acessórios. A inscrição Clément, deve a seu nome a Gustave Adolphe Clément Bayard ( ), vulgarmente conhecido apenas por Adolphe Clément, que foi um desportista, inventor e empresário, destacando se pela produção de bicicletas, motociclos, automóveis, pneus e aviões. Souvestre, apelidou Clément de «pai da bicicleta», mas este decidiu também ser «o pai do automobilismo» 25. Em 1878 montou uma empresa a de velocípedes, A. Clément & Cie, na Rua Brunel em Paris, a sua fama como construtor de bicicletas era reconhecida em todo o país devido à sua aposta em equipar as suas bicicletas com pneus de câmara de ar, uma inovação que introduziu em 1881, após obter a licença para a comercialização dos pneus Dunlop em França. A sua fama continuou a crescer e em 1894 foi considerado o melhor construtor de velocípedes no seu país. Determinado a aumentar a sua influência no mercado, passou a investir noutras empresas, tornando se o maior accionista da companhia construtora de bicicletas Gladiator fundada por Alexandre Darracq 26. Posteriormente junta se a outra grande empresa do mesmo sector a Humber, fundando assim a sociedade Clément, Gladiator & Humber, sediada na Rua Brunel, número 18 em Paris, a mesma à qual José de Barahona encomenda o automóvel e endereça os cheques. Com o sucesso alcançado nas vendas de velocípedes, a sociedade volta se para a produção de viaturas de motor de explosão. Clément aumenta a sua loja da Rua Brunel e inaugura tam The make and model of the voiturette. The first automobile to circulate in Portalegre? To determine the make and model of the car the Clément inscription, located on the front part, was vital since, at that time, the car bodies of various makes were rather similar, since they could be used by several makes, and only different in terms of the engine and a small number of accessories. The Clément registration was that of Gustave Adolphe Clément-Bayard ( ), commonly known just as Adolphe Clément, who was a sportsman, inventor and entrepreneur, noted for his manufacture of bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles, tyres and aeroplanes. Souvestre dubbed Clément the father of the bicycle, but he also decided to be the father of motoring 25. In 1878 he set up a bicycle company, A. Clément & Cie, in Rue Brunel in Paris. His reputation as a manufacturer of bicycles was recognized throughout the country due to his decision to fit his bikes with air-chamber tyres, an innovation introduced in 1881, after obtaining a licence to market them from Dunlop tyres in France. His fame continued to grow and in 1894 he was considered the best bicycle manufacturer in his country. Determined to increase his influence on the market, he began to invest in other companies, and became the largest shareholder of the bicycle construction company Gladiator founded by Alexandre Darracq 26. He later merged with Humber, the other major company in this sector, thus founding the company Clément, Gladiator & Humber, based at 18 Rue Brunel in Paris, the same address from which José de Barahona had ordered the car and endorsed the cheques. With such a level of success in bicycle sales, the company turned to the manufacture of spark-ignition vehicles. Clément increased the size of his Rue Brunel store and also opened a factory, first in Mézineres, where he purchased a 16

18 former weapons factory and turned it into a factory manufacturing bicycles and motorized vehicles, then moved to Levallois-Perret, more exactly on the Quai Michelet, where cars were manufactured in his name 27. In 1900, the factory occupied an area of??6 000 metres, employed about 300 workers and produced about 150 cars per year 28. The company started building automobiles in 1898 with the manufacture of voiturettes, exactly the model that José de Barahona ordered. These cars were manufactured under the name Clément and Gladiator, with the difference between the two only noticeable on the inscription at the front and also due to the fact that the Clément model was equipped with a drive shaft and the Gladiator was fitted with a chain. The reason why the two had different names was because the Clément was manufactured in Adophe s factory in Levallois-Perret and the Gladiator was manufactured at the factory in Pre-Saint-Gervais, even though they belonged to the same manufacturing company. 29 José de Barahona s car is a Clément, a voiturette manufactured at the factory in Levallois-Perret In this model, Clément, Gladiator & Humber fitted the cars with De Dion Bouton engines 30. Later, Clément acquired the licence to fit the cars with Panhard-et-Levassor engines. This model, fitted with a 3 CV horsepower engine, was a touring vehicle with a capacity for two passengers, whose assembly process was still manual, and which was almost entirely built to order. In order to confirm, as oral sources indicated, if this was the first Portalegre automobile, an attempt was made to identify other licence permits to drive and circulate in the District Archive and the Portalegre Civil Govbém uma fábrica, primeiro em Mézineres, onde adquire uma antiga fábrica de armamento transformando a numa fábrica de construção de velocípedes e motorizados, passando depois para Levallois Perret, mais precisamente no Quai Michelet, onde eram produzidos os automóveis com o seu nome 27. Em 1900, a fábrica ocupava uma superfície de 6000 metros, empregava cerca de 300 operários e produzia cerca de 150 viaturas por ano 28. A sociedade inicia a construção de automóveis no ano de 1898 com o fabrico de voiturettes, precisamente o modelo que José de Barahona encomendou. Estas viaturas eram produzidas com o nome de Clément ou Gladiator, sendo que a diferença entre as duas apenas se notava na inscrição da dianteira e, também, porque o modelo Clément era equipado com um eixo de accionamento e o Gladiator era provido de corrente. A razão pela qual os dois tinham diferentes nomes era porque o Clément era produzido na fábrica de Adolphe em Levallois Perret e o Gladiator era produzido na fábrica de Pre Saint Gervais, embora pertencessem à mesma sociedade construtora. 29 O automóvel de José de Barahona é um Clément, uma voiturette produzida na fábrica de Levallois Perret Neste modelo, a Clément, Gladiator & Humber equipava as viaturas com motores De Dion Bouton 30, mais tarde Clément adquiriu a licença para equipar os automóveis com motores Panhard et Levassor. Este modelo, equipado com um motor de 3 cv de potência, era uma viatura de turismo com a capacidade para dois passageiros, cujo processo de montagem era ainda manual, sendo que a sua produção era feita quase inteiramente por encomenda. A fim de confirmarmos, tal como apontavam as fontes orais, se este foi o primeiro automóvel de Portalegre, tentamos identificar no Arquivo Distrital e no Arquivo do Governo Civil de 17

19 Portalegre, outros alvarás de licença de «guiar» e de «circulação», mas o registo de alvarás sobre automóveis e outras viaturas só se encontra disponível a partir de Com o mesmo objectivo levámos a cabo a consulta de periódicos entre 1899 a 1904, nomeadamente o «Distrito de Portalegre». Sobre a «voiturette», não encontrámos nenhuma referência, mas identificámos outras viaturas que passaram pela cidade, todas de 1903, o que indica que por esta altura o automóvel era ainda uma viatura rara e que suscitava curiosidade mobilizando os habitantes 32. No entanto, por insuficiência de documentação não podemos confirmar a hipótese de este ter sido o primeiro automóvel na cidade de Portalegre. ernment Archive, but registration of licence permits for automobiles and other vehicles is only accessible for those from 1909 onwards 31. O valor patrimonial deste objecto pode ser constatado a diversos níveis. Por um lado é um elemento caracterizador da elite da época. Por outro lado, tratar se de um automóvel pioneiro em Portugal, recorde se que em 1900 existiam menos de uma centena no território nacional e que se concentravam, sobretudo, nos grandes centros urbanos do litoral, ao contrário deste. Além disso é um exemplar da sociedade Clément, Gladiator & Humber, que apenas construiu veículos durante cinco anos ( ) e este modelo de automóvel incorpora o engenho de vários pioneiros da História Automóvel, é equipado com um motor DeDion e teve origem numa sociedade que congregava nomes como Adolphe Clément e Alexandre Darracq, figuras incontornáveis dos primeiros tempos do automobilismo. The heritage value of the voiturette. The car is nowadays to be found at the Municipal Museum of Portalegre, however it was not possible to establish the date of its donation as no documentation is available. The heritage value of this object can be affirmed in different ways. Firstly, it was a defining characteristic of the elite of the time. Secondly, it was a pioneering automobile in Portugal, when one recalls that in 1900 there were fewer than one hundred in Portugal, which were mainly concentrated in the large coastal urban centres, unlike this. In addition it is a model from the Clément, Gladiator & Humber Company, which just built vehicles for five years ( ) and this automobile model incorporates the ingenuity of various pioneers in Automotive History, as it was fitted with a De Dion engine and was made by a company made up of names such as Adolphe Clément and Alexandre Darracq, key figures from the early days of motoring. 18
