Os Estudos de Trdução enqunto disciplin científic não podem compreender-se sem o ensino d trdução. É í, no ensino, como cus ou efeito, que tem origem tod ou quse tod produção científic dos Estudos de Trdução. Com entrd do ensino d trdução ns universiddes portuguess espervse e esper-se o incremento d produção científic ncionl d disciplin. Ms, será justo vlir, HOJE, o ensino d trdução tendo como critério prepondernte produção científic, sbendo-se que entrd do ensino d trdução ns universiddes não ultrpss, n generlidde, os cinco ou seis nos? É est questão que qui pretendo debter com os meus leitores. Import referir dois ddos importntes. O primeiro diz respeito às circunstâncis d entrd do ensino d trdução ns universiddes portuguess. O segundo será porventur um novidde pr os meus leitores e é ele que está n origem d necessidde dest crónic: determinção legl que obrig à vlição extern de todos os cursos, pssdos cinco nos pós su entrd em funcionmento. É um processo obrigtório e s sus consequêncis podem ser drástics, cso vlição obtenh resultdos deficientes. Não é este um ssunto que ocupe s págins dos jornis e, por isso, os meus leitores tomrão tlvez s minhs plvrs por notíci. Ms é ssim. Compreende-se que deve existir vlição dos cursos, não é isso o que se coloc em cus. Ms um bem em si pode tornr-se num ml mior e configurr té, no cso dos cursos de trdução, um utêntico desstre. Um vlição dos cursos de trdução bsed n plicção do critério d produção científic dos docentes é extemporâne. Por certo que os docentes se dedicrm em primeiro lugr à preprção e o bom desempenho ds trefs letivs ds novs uniddes curriculres que lhes erm confids, deixndo pr segundo plno investigção científic. O mesmo poderi dizer-se sobre o critério d percentgem de docentes com doutormento em Estudos de Trdução. Não são ind ssim tntos os doutordos que temos e, plicr este critério em tempo de crise económic, qundo s universiddes veem de no pr no diminuir s verbs dos seus orçmentos oriunds do Estdo, é um bsurdo. Sim, vlir dest mneir os cursos de trdução é um desstre. E muito injusto, pois não se tem em cont entrd recente d trdução ns universiddes. Não se comprem estes cursos com os cursos de lrg trdição universitári! Não existe justiç num vlição de tudo vlir d mesm mneir! O ensino d trdução está em risco. E não é por flt de estudntes. E, sem ensino, continuremos por muitos nos n cud d Europ no que diz respeito um bibliogrfi portugues dos Estudos de Trdução; e os nossos profissionis continurão ser recrutdos no mercdo de trblho sem qulificções de nível superior. The issues surrounding the teching of trnsltion re not indifferent to my reders, nd we hve tckled the subject severl times. Trnsltion Studies s scientific discipline cnnot be seprted from the teching of trnsltion. Indeed it is the teching, s cuse or effect, which gives rise to ll or lmost ll of the scientific production of Trnsltion Studies. Upon the introduction of the teching of trnsltion in Portuguese universities, the hope ws tht the ntionl scientific production in this re would increse. But is it fir to TODAY ssess the teching of trnsltion with the overriding criterion being the scientific production, given tht trnsltion only begn to be tught in most universities five or six yers go? This is the question I intend to discuss with my reders. Two importnt fctors must first be pointed out. The first is linked to the circumstnces surrounding the introduction of trnsltion teching in Portuguese universities. The second is likely to be news to my reders, nd is the reson behind the need for this edition s column: the legl ruling tht requires the externl ssessment of ll university courses, five yers fter they begin to be tught. Among the set of circumstnces surrounding the introduction of trnsltion in Portuguese universities, I remember only those linked to the techers who hd to give the curriculr modules of the trnsltion courses. Most of the techers cme from old courses, which ttrcted low number of students. They were bove ll techers from the re of foreign lnguges. They were sked to recycle themselves, nd mny embrced the tsk with priseworthy endevour. As university techers, they were forced not only to tech, but lso to crry out reserch in the scientific res of the curriculr modules tht they tught. They did not neglect their specilised fields (foreign lnguges), which is understndble, nd begn reserching in Trnsltion Studies. But it ws new strt, nd time is needed before the results cn be seen. Five yers lter nd these courses re ssessed by n externl committee. It is compulsory process nd its consequences cn be drstic, if negtive evlution is rrived t. This is not subject tht occupies the newspper column inches, nd so it will probbly be news to my reders. But this is the cse. It is understndble tht the courses should be ssessed. This is not in question. But good ide in theory cn turn into bd one in prctice, nd even, in the cse of the trnsltion courses, become n uthentic disster. An ssessment of the trnsltion courses bsed on pplying the criterion of the mount of scientific production of the techers is extemporneous. The techers certinly dedicte themselves first nd foremost to the proper preprtion nd teching of the new curriculr modules they hve been entrusted with, mking the scientific production secondry mission. The sme cn be sid bout the criteri of the percentge techers with PhD in Trnsltion Studies. We do not yet hve mny doctors in this re, nd pplying this criterion in time of economic crisis, when the universities stte funding is cut yer fter yer is bsurd. Yes, ssessing the trnsltion courses this wy is disster. And very unfir, s it does not tke into ccount the recent entrnce of trnsltion in the universities. You cnnot compre these courses with courses tht hve long university trdition! There is no justice in n ssessment process tht evlutes everything in the sme wy! The teching of trnsltion is t risk. And this is not becuse of lck of students. And, without eduction, we will continue for mny yers lgging behind in Europe with regrd to Portuguese bibliogrphy in Trnsltion Studies; nd our professionls will continue to be recruited in the mrket without higher eduction qulifictions. It is not good news tht reches us from the Portuguese universities s the yer comes to n end. I continue to be stounded t some requests in which the nswers to the bove questions re mjesticlly unrelistic, nd even more stonished when the client expresses disbelief t the fct the trnsltor cnnot deliver high-qulity trnsltion t supersonic speed. Just this week I hd n exmple. Severl e-mils were exchnged bout potentil cdemic trnsltion. The subject mtter ws described, s ws the formt it should be delivered in, with the unnegotible condition tht it be trnslted by one trnsltor only. The client then decided to shre the smll detil tht: We need 20,000 words delivered every 5 dys, including weekends, nd the job totl is 160,000 words. The client could not fthom why I refused the job even when I politely pointed out tht to ccept such project I would hve to suddenly shun clients I hve worked with for two decdes, I would hve to sit in front of my PC for eight hours dy for 40 dys solid, fter which I would likely be fcing divorce proceedings nd legitimte complints of child neglect.
