Início da missão na KILT O novo ano regista também um marco histórico para a Orienting. Pela primeira vez, a associação expande a sua missão e inicia a sua acção numa nova instituição parceira. Trata-se da Khmer Independent Life Team (KILT), localizada também na região de Siem Reap. Esta instituição, à imagem da CDO e da SHAC, acredita na educação e formação como meios primordiais para quebrar ciclos de pobreza. A KILT, em particular, forma não só crianças e jovens mas também adultos, sendo a sua missão focada no apoio a pessoas com poliomielite ou que sofreram sequelas após incidentes com minas terrestres. O alinhamento de visão e valores entre a KILT e a Orienting promete mais excelentes resultados e conquistas; resta pôr mãos à obra! Orienting s mission starts at KILT The new year is also an historical mark for Orienting. For the first time in its history, the association expands its mission and starts acting in a new partner institution. It is called Khmer Independent Life Team (KILT) and it is located in Siem Reap as well. This institution, like CDO and SHAC, believes In education and training as primary means to tackle poverty cycles. KILT, in particular, educates not only children and youth, but also adults, having its mission focused on supporting people with polio or who have suffered disabilities due to landmines. The alignment of vision and values between KILT and Orienting lets us envision excellent results and achievements; now it s time to get to work! 3
Conclusão da missão na SHAC O início da missão na KILT, após um minucioso trabalho de pesquisa da equipa de voluntários, está directamente relacionado com o entendimento de que a SHAC conta já com boas condições para um desenvolvimento autónomo e sustentável, como é sempre objectivo da Orienting. Chegar a este ponto é motivo de satisfação pelos sucessos alcançados e permite procurar obter novas conquistas em comunidades onde as carências ainda são uma barreira demasiado forte. Merecem destaque e agradecimento todos os voluntários que contribuíram para as vitórias da SHAC, com uma nota especial para o trabalho da Marina e da Matilde na conclusão de diversas tarefas e projectos na SHAC e na transição para a KILT. À SHAC, os desejos de que continue a escrever uma história feliz e com corações sorridentes! Wrap-up of the work at SHAC The beginning of our mission at KILT, after careful research by the volunteers, is closely linked to the understanding that SHAC already has good conditions for an autonomous and sustainable development, as is always Orienting s goal. To reach this point is a source of satisfaction due to the successes achieved and allows us to seek new achievements in communities where scarcities are still a barrier too strong to overpass. We highlight and thank all the volunteers that contributed to SHAC s victories, with a special note to Marina and Matilde s work in finishing various tasks and projects, as well as in the transition to KILT. To SHAC, we wish the continuation of a happy story about happy, smiling hearts! Our hearts smile on together!
Chegada de novas voluntárias Janeiro é mês de alterações na equipa de voluntários que está no Camboja a fazer voluntariado pela Orienting. Num momento entusiasmante, pela expansão já referida, vemos chegar a Inês Cunha (à direita na foto de cima) e a Joana Almeida (à esquerda na mesma foto), com uma motivação inspiradora para abraçar o desafio. As duas juntam-se ao José Maria, a Mariana e a Matilde, que decidiram continuar o voluntariado por mais 3 meses, numa situação pouco habitual mas extraordinária pela continuidade que permite ao magnífico trabalho já desenvolvido. De regresso a Portugal está a Marina (na foto de baixo), após 3 meses de dedicação e trabalho pelos quais estamos muito orgulhosos! New volunteers arrive at Siem Reap January is a month for changes in the team of volunteers that is volunteering through Orienting in Cambodia. At an exciting moment, due to the previously mentioned expansion, we are glad to have Inês Cunha (on the right in the picture above) and Joana Almeida (on the left in the same picture) arriving with an inspiring motivation to embrace the challenge. Both the new volunteers join José Maria, Mariana and Matilde, who have decided to proceed with their volunteering program for 3 more months an unusual, but fantastic situation as it allows an improved continuity to the extraordinary work performed lately. Marina (on the picture below) returns to Portugal, after 3 months of dedication and work for which we are thoroughly proud! 5
Plano curricular na SHAC A concluir a acção da Orienting junto da SHAC, foi feito um plano curricular para as turmas da instituição. Este documento é um exemplo típico do que as sucessivas equipas da Orienting procuram: permite dar seguimento à aprendizagem e assegura a evolução dos estudantes, mapeando e planeando os conteúdos leccionados e a leccionar. Deste modo, contraria-se a imprevisibilidade causada pela sucessão de professores que dispunham de pouca informação sobre o que tinha sido leccionado anteriormente, resultando em aulas inconsequentes, não obstante as excelentes intenções. SHAC gets academic planning One of Orienting s last achievements among SHAC was completing a full academic plan for the institution s classes. Such a document is a typical example of what the successive teams from Orienting seek: it allows to provide a logic flow to the students learning and ensures their evolution, by mapping and planning the contents already taught and to be taught. This way, we counter the unpredictability which is usually caused by the sequent teachers who have little information about what was taught previously, often times resulting in inconsequent classes, although intentions are great. 6
Vacinação na CDO A CDO recebeu em Dezembro uma campanha de vacinação para as crianças e jovens da instituição. Esta foi uma campanha da UNICEF, a qual procura vacinar um conjunto alargado, mas, ainda assim, inevitavelmente selecto de pessoas em risco, devido às carências que complicam o acesso a determinados cuidados de saúde, ainda que tão essenciais. Foi, por isso, muito importante que a CDO tenha tido a oportunidade de receber esta campanha da UNICEF, garantindo um cuidado primário para a saúde de todos. Vaccination at CDO In December, CDO had a vaccination campaign for its kids. This was a campaign from UNICEF, which aims to vaccinate a broad, but, inevitably, limited group of people in risky conditions, for whom it is difficult to access certain healthcare measures, even if so essential. Thus, it was very important that CDO had the chance to be included in this campaign from UNICEF, ensuring a basic care for everyone s health. 7

Sobre a Orienting Fundada em Fevereiro de 2012 por três alunos da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, a Associação Orienting é uma Instituição Privada de Solidariedade Social. Actualmente conta com mais de 20 membros motivados em levar a cabo a missão da Orienting, como actividade complementar à formação académica ou ao emprego. A Orienting pretende dinamizar oportunidades, garantindo a dignidade, independência e desenvolvimento sustentável nas comunidades onde opera. Estes objectivos são atingidos através de programas de voluntariado que ajudam a dotar as instituições parceiras de mecanismos necessários à vida humana, apostando da responsabilização das mesmas através da formação e educação. 11
About Orienting Founded in February 2012 by three students from the Portuguese Catholic University, Associação Orienting is a non-profit organization. Currently, more than 20 members are involved and motivated to take Orienting s mission forward, as a complementary activity to their studies or jobs. Orienting aims at promoting opportunities, ensuring dignity, independence and sustainable development for the communities with which it cooperates. These goals are fulfilled through volunteer programs which help providing the partner institutions with basic, essential mechanisms and infrastructures. Within this frame, Orienting understands education and training as key to the empowerment of these underdeveloped communities. 12
