2 The Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) was founded in 1991 by a small group of forward-thinking coffee producers that recognized the potential of investment in quality. Today, BSCA is recognized as Brazil s national authority representing specialty coffee. BSCA achieved this status because it was responsible for changing the international perceptions about Brazilian coffee. As the world s largest producer and exporter, the country had been seen as a supplier of quantity. The Association broke this paradigm and today we are a valued partner to our worldwide customers. With increased recognition from Brazil s specialty coffee community, BSCA has seen steady membership growth. From 2010 to 2014, membership expanded by approximately 200%; adding new producers, roasters, exporters, cooperatives, coffee shops, importers and brokers, among others, who have joined us in the pursuit of our mission to promote Brazilian coffee and united with us to publicize the best coffees in the world. BSCA s respect in overseas markets was boosted by the diversity of aromas offered by the country. As the coffee crops are grown in different climates and at different elevations, the drinks produced around Brazil have equally differentiated flavors. Our participation in international events has also become a platform to strengthen Brazilian coffee abroad. CUP OF EXCELLENCE BSCA participated in of the Cup of Excellence quality contests, which encourage international buyers to visit Brazilian farms and get to know our members work up close. The success of the contest was resounding and piqued interest around the world to the extent that nowadays the Cup of Excellence is carried out in 10 countries (Brazil, Burundi, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Rwanda). In addition to being concerned with the chain of Brazilian specialty coffees, BSCA pays attention to the worldwide market. It welcomes international members, with the exact goal of bringing producers and buyers of specialty coffee closer. BSCA has also expanded international membership and partnerships with renowned entities such as the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE). In Brazil, BSCA is the only association that certifies the quality and sustainability of coffee. For the buyer, the BSCA seal is a guarantee that all the farm s workers are registered and work safely and that the environment is being respected in the stages of producing the drink, making it an additional incentive to consume the product. We have also turned our attention to young people! By improving the visibility of the sector, showing that the producer is not rustic, but rather a businessman, a modern entrepreneur with doors open to the world, we are raising the interest of the young in producing specialty coffees and, in this way, guaranteeing the continuity of this business in the future. 3 an incentive for QUality In addition to giving strength to producers of quality beans on the farms, each edition, the cup of Excellence discovers new flavors and highlights brazil as a great producer of specialty coffees. Brazil has MainTained a widely recognized reputation as a large and reliable coffee producer and exporter for many years. Over the decades, there have been numerous improvements made to farms and price regulation, in addition to the support of new markets. However, it was necessary to acknowledge the quality of the bean, from planting to cup. Thus the Cup of Excellence began in 1999, a contest with the goal of selecting the best coffees in the country. Open to all Brazilian producers of Arabica coffee, the contest classifies specialty coffees as those that achieve the score of 85 points or higher on a 100 point scale. Organized by the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), the competition was based on the Gourmet Coffee Project of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and World Trade Organization (WTO). The program s methodology was introduced in Brazil by George Howell, at the time a consultant to the project. Nowadays there are two contests in Brazil: Cup of Excellence Early Harvest for Pulped Naturals and Cup of Excellence Naturals for Natural Coffees. In 2014, the contest celebrated its 100th edition. Brazil will host the commemoration in the city of Viçosa, MG. Another novelty is that it will offset the carbon dioxide released by the event through the Carbono Zero project, coordinated by the Department of Forestry Engineering at the Federal university of Viçosa. Native species of trees will be planted in areas undergoing environmental recovery and/or on the rural properties of partner producers. George Howell believes the Cup of Excellence has profoundly impacted the world of coffee and has been quoted as saying, small roasting companies were able to prosper after having the opportunity to show to the tasters their artisan coffees, freshly roasted to perfection. Coffee growers also profited economically and, consequently, the communities to which they belong prospered. It s a very beautiful project. Since its creation, the contest has not only driven the improvement of coffee quality on Brazilian farms, but has also discovered new producing regions. The Cup of Excellence seeks to identify the best Brazilian Arabica coffee produced in the current harvest. The coffees are evaluated by qualified cuppers. The top coffees selected by the national and international juries are celebrated with their producers in an awards ceremony. Later, those same coffees are sold at auction by the Cup of Excellence and obtain international exposure and substantial premiums sometimes reaching hundreds of dollars per kilo. 4 The BSCA Seal is unique for specialty coffees It is a guarantee of the coffee s security and credibility to the consumer BSCA is the only Brazilian institution that certifies lots and monitors specialty coffee quality control seals. Continuously improving our work, we develop serious and transparent actions that guarantee that the coffee offered to buyers is always qualified, with complete traceability through individual numbering for lots that receive the seal. In a competitive market such as coffee, both the consumer and the roaster confront the daily challenge of choosing which coffee is the best from among hundreds of options. One of the key elements for this decision is precisely the certification that, in the case of BSCA, carefully traces the coffee from its origin to the cupping tests and the evaluation of its sensory characteristics. Buyers of coffee with BSCA seals can be certain that they have found a quality product that has passed through a thorough selection process and that has the full support of the organization with research, control techniques and standards of excellence. 4 bsca encarte_bsca2014_ingles.indd 4 02/09/14 18:58

5 coffee certification process 1. The member shall send a sample of the lot to be certified to BSCA. 2. Cuppers shall analyze the samples based on type, color and screen size. If the sample is not approved in any of these requirements, it will be invalidated and will not be sent to the test of roasted and ground beans. 3. The evaluation of the roasted and ground beans is done by the same group of cuppers by scoring aspects such as fragrance, cleanliness of the cup, sweetness, acidity, body, taste, aftertaste and overall balance; defects are subtracted using the Cup of Excellence methodology. In order to be certified the coffee has to obtain a score equal to or higher than 80 and not score zero in any of the parameters evaluated. 4. The approved samples receive the BSCA certificate. 5. The certificate is delivered to the grower who will send it to the buyer (client) of the certified coffee lot, along with the coffee itself. 6. The grower who has had his/her coffee certified should inform BSCA the name of the buying company, as well as the quantity of coffee sold and the country of destination. 7. The buyer of the certified coffee lot may acquire traceability seals regarding the BSCA certification process according to the sizes of the packaging. HOW THE SEAL WORKS 1. The seal can be requested through a BSCA certification code. That is, only coffees from a lot that has been certified can have BSCA seals. 2. The BSCA seal shall be issued though an individual numbering system for each certificate and packaging, including weight and qr code. 3. With the qr code, it is possible to consult information about the lot of coffee and the farm on smartphones and tablets. 4. In addition to the characteristics of the coffee, it is possible to consult information about the history of the farm, photos, location, location of the field where the sample came from and other details. 5. The entire system is automated and auditable, bringing greater transparency to the process. AUDITS BSCA is responsible for monitoring the delivery process of certified lots and the sale of coffees on the domestic market. To do this, audits are performed, collecting samples of roasted coffee at points of sale. The audits are done by sample, without prior notice. The samples collecting in audits are analyzed again. Second instance: the producer shall lose certification and shall receive a warning. Third instance: the producer shall lose certification and shall be banned from BSCA. FOR COMPANIES THAT Buy FROM MEMBERS AND SELL ON THE DOMESTIC MARKET: First instance: certification shall be suspended and the seals shall be collected from the market. Second instance: the seals shall be collected from the market and the name of the company buying the lot shall be divulged in print. Third instance: The company shall no longer be allowed to acquire BSCA certified lots. TRACEABILITY When the consumer buys a certified coffee, he can verify that the packaging displays a BSCA seal with a number and a qr code. This guarantees the consumer that the coffee is high-quality and was produced with transparency. 11 COFFEE QUALITY INSTITUTE (CQI): In 2014, BSCA became an In Country Partner (ICP) of this organization in order to conduct q-grader coffee classification training in Brazil. With this partnership, BSCA became the focal point for receiving, codifying and sending results from the country to CqI s database and is prepared to receive samples for q-grader Certification. SAFE TRACE CAFÉ: In partnership, this company is responsible for issuing, controlling and sending BSCA Seals, increasing the security of the process and further expanding BSCA s recognition and credibility regarding the sustainability of Brazilian specialty coffee, from the field to the final consumer. SPECIALITY COFFEE ASSOCIA- TION OF EUROPE (SCAE): The organizations performed an interassociation in 2014 to expand the relationship between members and cooperating in training, education and professional qualification, in addition to working together at international events, improving access for SCAE members. MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, LIVESTOCK AND FOOD SUPPLY (MAPA): responsible for the federal coffee agribusiness policy supporting our presence at international fairs, in addition to strategic actions for Brazil. SPECIALTY COFFEE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (SCAA): The objective of this partnership is to join the forces of similar entities, with the mission of conducting training and courses and increasing technical coffee content. In 2014, BSCA conducted the first SCAA courses in Brazil. MINISTRY OF AGRARIAN DEVE- LOPMENT (MDA): This partnership has the goal of supporting guiding actions and publicizing Brazilian coffee family products that are developed in the cultivation of specialty coffees. STATE OF MINAS GERAIS COO- PERATIVES UNION AND ORGA- NIZATION (OCEMG): A partnership with the cooperative defense body. This partnership seeks to create job opportunities and to expand the knowledge of farmers children for them to follow in their parents footsteps.
