1 Syllabus of Curricular Unit Curricular Unit EMPIRES, COLONIALISM AND POST-COLONIALISM I Study Programme INTER-UNIVERSITY DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN HISTORY Academic year / Semester 2015/2016 1st semester ECTS 6 Coordination Ângela Barreto Xavier (ICS-ULisboa) Nuno Gonçalo Monteiro (ICS-ULisboa) Learning Outcomes Syllabus In this seminar we intend to discuss early-modern imperial dynamics, privileging the Asian and Atlantic regions, with a particular focus on the Iberian experiences. After starting with a discussion on the concepts and historiography (which will be resumed in the final session), the seminar unfolds in two parts: The first part focuses on Asian imperial experiences, stressing issues such as: imperial networks in the global context, competing political cultures or convergence of different empires, the complexity of the government of different people, the links between African space and the Asiatic world, as well as themes related with the links between knowledge production and imperial practices. The second part deals with the history and historiography of Atlantic European empires, focusing on: the concepts of Atlantic, the models of colonization and territorial occupation of the Americas, the connections between Europeans and Amerindians, slavery, and the ties between Africa and the Americas. 2 6 - The production and circulation of knowledge in the context of the Portuguese empire (Ângela Barreto Xavier) Imperial dynamics in the Atlantic 7 - Models of administration of colonial Americas (Nuno Gonçalo Monteiro) 8 - Brasil: demographic dynamics (Nuno Gonçalo Monteiro e Carla Almeida) 9 - Africa in Atlantic history: slavery and cultural changes (José Silva Horta) Models of colonization of Americas in comparative perspective: ideologies, institutions, repertoires (José Vicente Serrão) 11 - The age of American independences (José Damião Rodrigues) Open seminar about the imperial dynamics of the early-modern period Evaluation Criteria Assessment combines 75 % attendance (9 sessions) and three different forms of evaluation: Participation: Students have to submit questions and discuss the required reading (25% of the final grade). Critical presentation and comment of one of the required readings. This presentation shall not exceed 20 minutes (25% of the final grade). An essay (between 2500 and 4000 words) about one of the themes of the PhD project that is connected with the programme of the seminar (50% of the final grade).
