6 PRESIDENTIAL TOURS The project Presidential Tours - Tourist Travel Train in Historic Trains primarily aims at the conservation and restoration of the old Presidential Train a special composition used by the Head of State and his Entourage between 1910 and In 2011, the year of the celebration of the Centenary of Tourism in Portugal, this emblematic train got back not only all its physical and functional capabilities, through a rigorous process of conservation and restoration, but also all its dignity as a patrimonial object of unique value. Rescued from the Past, the Presidential Train is moving again, and that is why we invite you to embark with us. Be part of history! PASSEIOS PRESIDENCIAIS O projeto Passeios Presidenciais Viagens Turísticas em Comboio Histórico tem por principal objetivo a conservação e o restauro do antigo Comboio Presidencial composição especial utilizada pelo Chefe de Estado e pela sua Comitiva entre 1910 e Em 2011, ano em que se comemorou o Centenário do Turismo em Portugal, devolveu-se a este comboio emblemático toda a sua integridade física e funcional, mediante um rigoroso processo de conservação e restauro, mas também toda a sua dignidade, enquanto objeto patrimonial de valor único. Presidential Train T he construction of this kind of carriage called royal trains comes from the second half of the nineteenth century. Those were special compositions prepared and intended for the use of kings and emperors in the exercise of their duties of State. In a Europe ruled by constitutional monarchies and empires, in which monarchs were considered the Heads of State, it become essential to equip the executive power of the modern nations with special means of transport, dignifying the majesty of the monarchs. The railways were a novelty and contributed to the acceleration of traffic. This could not be neglected by the Governments in terms of their constitutional representation. Also, given the need to travel, the railways allowed a better operability of the government regarding the territorial and political union of the Nation or the territorial limits of the Empire. Trains were a great social attraction, connected to the monarchs image, not only because of the monarchy role in the political hierarchy (that meaning the monarchy was the holder of the technological advances, of the railways cartography and of the political and financial options of the ventures) but also due to the imaginary of the travelers running the royal itineraries. Os caminhos de ferro eram uma novidade e contribuíam para a aceleração da viação, aspeto que não podia ser descurado pelo Estado, em função da sua representatividade constitucional ou, dada a necessidade de deslocação, em termos de operatividade dos mandados governativos, à escala da unidade territorial e política da Nação ou dos limites territoriais do Império. Note-se que os comboios eram motivo de grande atração social, aos quais os próprios monarcas se encontravam associados, quer pelo lugar que ocupavam na hierarquia política logo detentores dos avanços tecnológicos, da cartografia dos caminhos de ferro e das opções políticas e financeiras dos empreendimentos quer por via do imaginário dos viajantes de itinerários régios. Este último aspeto conferia às companhias ferroviárias um saber acumulado, em função do contacto privilegiado com a Casa Real, e um papel preponderante na escolha dos meios de transporte adequados às deslocações da comitiva régia. 9

7 and a leading role in the choice of appropriate means of transport to the travels of the royal entourage. In 1898, the Portuguese Royal Train was composed of three Carriages, namely the Royal Carriage, the Carriage of Ministers and the Lounge Restaurant, built in 1890 by the Désouches David company. It also had a wagon to put the luggage and was towed by a steam locomotive. This special composition evolved considerably since the time of King Luís I, being adapted to the new materials successively introduced by the manufacturers of those luxury wagons. In the late nineteenth century, the Portuguese Royal Train boasted a well-studied interior architecture, adapted to the demands of the comfort possible for those days and complemented by a luxurious ornamentation. With the implementation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, the Portuguese Royal Train is renamed as the Presidential Train, being often used by the Head of State on his travels, given the railways increasing role in the transport sector. Travels of the high official representatives were in charge of the House of the Presidency of the Republic, in close liaison with the Management of the National Railway Company which, to that effect, used to create special routes. Between 1910 and 1930, the Presidential Train should not have undergone major changes, keeping the three Carriages inherited from the previous composition. But in 1930, the National Railway Company acquired a new carriage for the Presidential Train, ordered to the company Linke Hoffmann Busch to serve as the Carriage of the Head of State. Em 1898, o «trem real» português era constituído por três Salões, a saber: o Salão Real, o Salão dos Ministros e o Salão Restaurante, construídos em 1890 pela empresa Désouches David. Dispunha igualmente de um Furgão para colocar as bagagens e era rebocado por uma locomotiva a vapor. Esta composição especial evoluiria bastante desde o tempo de D. Luís I, adaptando-se às novidades sucessivamente introduzidas no material circulante pelos construtores das carruagens de luxo, sendo que, no final do século XIX, o Comboio Real português ostentava uma arquitetura interior muito bem estudada, adequada às exigências de conforto possíveis para a época e complementada por uma ornamentação luxuosa. Com a implantação da República Portuguesa, em 1910, é reformulada a designação da composição destinada ao Chefe de Estado que, frequentemente, passa a utilizar o Comboio Presidencial nas suas deslocações, dada a crescente importância dos caminhos de ferro no sector dos transportes. As deslocações das altas individualidades do Estado eram resolvidas pela Casa Civil da Presidência da República, em estreita articulação com a administração da Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses que, para esse efeito, estabelecia marchas especiais. Entre 1910 e 1930, o Comboio Presidencial não deverá ter sofrido grandes alterações, mantendo os três Salões herdados da composição anterior. Mas, em 1930, a Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses adquire um novo veículo para o Comboio Presidencial, encomendado à empresa Linke Hoffmann Busch, para servir de Salão do Chefe de Estado. Its luxurious interior is divided into several compartments: vestibule, Carriage and living quarters for the Head of State, his entourage and servant, and also a kitchen. Boletim da CP, 1930: A Carruagem Presidencial Já se encontra em Lisboa a esplêndida carruagem de luxo destinada aos Chefes de Estado que a Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses mandou construir na casa Linke Hoffmann Busch, de Berlau, Alemanha. A carruagem mede 15 metros de comprimento, pesa quilos e é pintada exteriormente de verde escuro. O interior, que é luxuoso, divide-se em vários compartimentos: vestíbulo, salão e aposentos para o Chefe de Estado, comitiva e criado, e cozinha. O mobiliário é do mais moderno, sendo as loiças em cristal de Rosenthal. A carruagem deu entrada nas oficinas da CP em Alcântara para receber as últimas beneficiações

8 In 1940, during the Centenary Celebrations of the Foundation of Portugal, the Presidential Train was refurbished and the three old Désouches David Carriages were transformed, both internally and externally, to be adapted to the format of the Linke Hoffmann Busch Carriage, for a more uniform composition. The work took place in the General Workshop of Barreiro. It might have been on that time that it would be incorporated a wagon for the transport of luggage, and a 1st Class Carriage, adapted to the higher public functions required, which would be called the Carriage of Journalists. This Carriage was designed to the accommodation of the delegation invited to travel with the Head of State and Ministers in their travels, made up by reporters and journalists from the major national and international newspapers, which thus conveyed the state decisions and news. This carriage had a different interior design, featuring a longitudinal passage corridor with access to seven compartments of six seats each, and belonged to a series of three similar carriages, built in 1930 by the company Nicaise & Delcuve. This train would also serve the interests of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcoming the government delegations of the Heads of State from other countries during their trips to Portugal. Destinava-se à comitiva convidada para acompanhar o Chefe de Estado e os Ministros nas suas deslocações, porventura constituída por repórteres e jornalistas dos principais periódicos nacionais e estrangeiros, que deste modo veiculavam as decisões e notícias do Estado. Esta carruagem revelava uma arquitetura interior diferente, dispondo de um corredor de passagem longitudinal com acesso a sete compartimentos de seis lugares cada. Pertencia a uma série de três carruagens, todas elas semelhantes, construídas em 1930 pela empresa Nicaise & Delcuve. Não obstante, serviria igualmente os interesses do Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros, acolhendo as comitivas governamentais dos Chefes de Estado de outros países, durante as suas viagens a Portugal. No decurso dos anos, e apesar de desatualizado face ao material circulante mais recente e moderno existente em Portugal, o Comboio Presidencial possuía vantagens inerentes à dignidade do Chefe de Estado, pois permitia deslocar a comitiva presidencial em maior comodidade e com velocidade superior à conseguida na época pelo automóvel, acrescentando-se a vantagem das refeições servidas a bordo num ambiente de luxo, o que não podia acontecer se a viagem se fizesse de carro. Na década de 60, a Comitiva do Chefe de Estado era servida por uma tripulação com cerca de dezoito pessoas, afeta em permanência ao Comboio Presidencial, e 13

9 travel in more comfort and with a speed exceeding that achieved by car on those days, providing the advantage of the meals being served on board in a luxurious environment, which could not happen if the trip would be made by car. In the 1960 s, the Delegation of the Head of State was served by a crew of about eighteen people, permanently allocated to the Presidential Train, comprising the following elements: an inspector, a locksmith, an electrician, two carriage drivers, a material supervisor, a train driver, two traction inspectors, two cooks, two kitchen helpers and four waiters. Although at this time most of the trips were made between Lisbon and Porto, with only a brief stop in Coimbra, the Presidential Train was used by the House of the Presidency of the Republic whenever necessary to preside official commemorative sessions or inaugural acts away from the capital. On the eve of departure, the Presidential Train used to go on an experimental trip, only with the Company s staff on board, from the Station Cruz de Pedra to the Entroncamento, to check the state of the composition. The following day, the special trip took place, preceded by an escort locomotive (a single locomotive) that went ahead of the Presidential Train assuring the safety of the route. The compositions assigned to the normal services were forced to pull over to the passage of the Presidential Train, even if they came full of passengers. The train slowed down during meals for the convenience of the Delegation. Usually, the President had lunch with a small group in the Carriage of the Head of State, which was equipped with its own kitchen. The Ministers and other guests took their meals in the Carriage Restaurant. Journalists and the crew did not eat on board. In the event of the Presidential Train not returning to Lisbon on the same day, the Delegation was accommodated in the several hotels in the region and rarely slept on board, although this composition being equipped with rooms and the sheets being always transported in special boxes. The crew slept in the wagon on improved cots. The Presidential Train was closely watched during the night by the National Guard. This might have been how the presidential trip took place on 16 October 1967, when Admiral Américo Tomás traveled to Guarda, to attend the opening ceremony of the works of electrical exploitation of Douro Internacional, where he remained for three days. Calouste Gulbenkian Art Library. constituída pelos seguintes elementos: um inspetor, um serralheiro, um eletricista, dois condutores de carruagens, um revisor, um revisor de material, um maquinista, dois inspetores de tração, dois cozinheiros, dois ajudantes de cozinha e quatro criados de mesa. Ainda que, nesta época, a grande maioria das deslocações se fizesse entre Lisboa e o Porto, apenas com uma breve paragem em Coimbra, o Comboio Presidencial era utilizado pela Casa Civil sempre que era necessário presidir a sessões comemorativas ou a atos inaugurais longe da Capital. Na véspera da saída, o Comboio Presidencial saía em viagem de experiência, apenas com o pessoal da Companhia a bordo, desde a Estação da Cruz de Pedra até ao Entroncamento, de modo a verificar o estado da composição. No dia seguinte, iniciava-se a marcha especial, precedida por uma batedora, ou seja, uma locomotiva isolada que, adiantando-se ao Comboio Presidencial, garantia que a via se encontrava em condições de segurança. As restantes composições, afetas aos serviços normais, eram obrigadas a encostar à passagem do Comboio Presidencial, mesmo se viessem cheias de passageiros. Durante as refeições, a marcha abrandava para maior comodidade da Comitiva. O Presidente almoçava geralmente com um grupo restrito no Salão do Chefe de Estado, o qual estava equipado com cozinha própria. Os ministros e restantes convidados tomavam as suas refeições no Salão Restaurante. Os jornalistas e a tripulação não comiam a bordo. Na eventualidade do Comboio Presidencial não regressar a Lisboa no próprio dia, a Comitiva distribuía-se pelos hotéis da região e raramente dormia a bordo, apesar desta composição especial estar equipada com quartos e de os lençóis serem sempre transportados em caixas especiais. A tripulação dormia no Furgão, em enxergas improvisadas enquanto, durante a noite, a Guarda Nacional Republicana vigiava de perto o Comboio Presidencial. Terá sido deste modo que decorreu a viagem presidencial que, no dia 16 de outubro de 1967, transportou o Almirante Américo Tomás até à Guarda, para assistir à cerimónia de inauguração das obras de aproveitamento elétrico do Douro Internacional, tendo aí permanecido durante três dias

10 CP Bulletin, December 1967: Presidential Trip to the Douro Internacional Generalissimo Franco and Admiral Américo Tomás inaugurated the grand dams of Aldeadávila (the most powerful in Europe) and Bemposta (the largest in the country). To attend the ceremony of the works of the electrical exploitation of the Douro Internacional, held on October, 17th and widely reported by the newspapers, Admiral Américo Tomás went to Guarda by train and then continued the trip by car to Aldeadávila and Bemposta, where he joined Generalissimo Franco. On the 16th and 18th the presidential train was made available to the Head of State, and it was formed by the special marches and , consisting of five units: D yf 408, Carriage S y 5 and S y 3, Carriage SR yf 2 and carriage A 7yf 704. The team at the controls of the locomotive was composed by Mr. António Gomes Leal, Engineer, Head of Traction and Rolling Stock, Júlio Carlos Soares Cadete, Head of Train Drivers, Herminio da Costa, 1st Class Train Driver and António Borges de Faria, Fireman. The composition, towed at the departure by the Electric Locomotive No. 2552, a metal box prototype of nation building, was painted with the colors of the park of Rolling Stock and Tractor of the Company: dark blue with a red stripe. As always, the presentation and care of the interior fittings deserved the utmost care of the responsible railway services both from the Company as of the Wagons-Lits. On the Presidential Train followed the Director João de Brito e Cunha, Engineer, Director General Espergueira Mendes, Adriano Baptista, Engineer, and José Martins Gomes, Chief Inspector. The presidential entourage comprised the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Public Works and Economic Affairs; the Ambassador of Spain in Lisbon; Secretaries of State for Public Works and Industry; Chief of State for the Protocol; Director General of the Technical Secretariat of the Presidency of the Council; Commercial Attaché by the Spanish Embassy and Officials of the Military House of the Head of State. The Presidential Train took one of its last trips on July 30, 1970, going along with the funeral procession of António Oliveira Salazar, departing from an improvised station in front of Jerónimos to Santa Comba Dão. When the Presidential Train stopped serving the Head of State, the composition was broken down and the presidential carriages stored in warehouses. With the museologic activity of Armando Ginestal Machado, in 1980, the Carriage of the Head of State and the Carriage Restaurant were protected and stored at the recently inaugurated Museological Sections of Santarém and Estremoz, respectively. At that same time, the Carriage of Ministers and the Carriage of the Delegation and Security were deplaced from the Station Cruz de Pedra to Entroncamento. The first one was adapted to be a Relief Train, a composition intended to occur accidents, derailments and damage to the railway, a task fulfilled for about twenty years. The second one, together with the Carriage of Journalists and the wagon allocated to the Presidential Train, were kept in a former warehouse of the Railway Complex of Entroncamento. 16 Boletim da CP, dezembro de 1967: Viagem Presidencial ao Douro Internacional O Generalíssimo Franco e o Almirante Américo Tomás inauguraram as grandiosas barragens de Aldeadávila (a mais potente da Europa) e da Bemposta (a maior do País). Para assistir à cerimónia das obras do aproveitamento elétrico do Douro Internacional, que os jornais largamente referiram e que se realizou em 17 de outubro findo, o Sr. Almirante Américo Tomás deslocou-se à Guarda, utilizando o comboio e daí seguindo viagem de automóvel até a Aldeadávila e Bemposta, onde se juntou ao Generalíssimo Franco. Foi posta à disposição do Chefe de Estado, nos dias 16 e 18, a composição presidencial, que formou as marchas especiais n.ºs e , constituída por cinco unidades: D yf 408, salões S y 5 e S y 3, salão SR yf 2 e a carruagem A 7yf 704. Aos comandos da máquina a equipa era constituída pelos Srs. Eng. António Gomes Leal, Chefe do Serviço de Tração e Material Circulante, Júlio Carlos Soares Cadete, Chefe de Maquinistas, Hermínio da Costa, Maquinista de 1.ª Classe e António Borges de Faria, Fogueiro. A composição, rebocada à partida pela Locomotiva Elétrica N.º 2552, protótipo de caixa metálica de construção nacional, achava-se pintada com as cores adotadas no parque de Material Circulante e Trator da Companhia: azul-escuro com faixa vermelha. E, como sempre, a sua apresentação e esmero de arranjo interior mereceram o maior cuidado dos serviços O Chefe Principal da Estação de Santa Apolónia, Leonel Dias Agudo, solicita autorização a Américo Tomás para dar partida ao comboio. Acompanharam o comboio presidencial os Srs. Administradores Eng. João de Brito e Cunha, Diretor Geral Espergueira Mendes, o Eng. Adriano Baptista e o Inspector Principal José Martins Gomes. Constituíam a comitiva presidencial os Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, das Obras Públicas e da Economia; Embaixador da Espanha em Lisboa; Subsecretários de Estado das Obras Públicas e da Indústria; Chefe do Protocolo do Estado; Diretor Geral do Secretariado Técnico da Presidência do Conselho; Adido Comercial junto da Embaixada de Espanha e Oficiais da Casa Militar do Chefe de Estado. O Comboio Presidencial terá efetuado uma das suas últimas viagens a 30 de julho de 1970, quando acompanhou o longo cortejo fúnebre de António Oliveira Salazar, desde uma estação improvisada em frente aos Jerónimos até Santa Comba Dão. Quando o Comboio Presidencial deixou de servir o Chefe de Estado, a composição foi desagregada e as carruagens presidenciais guardadas em armazéns. Com a atividade museológica de Armando Ginestal Machado, em 1980, foram protegidos o Salão do Chefe de Estado e o Salão Restaurante, resguardados nas então inauguradas Secções Museológicas de Santarém e Estremoz, respetivamente. Também na mesma época, o Salão dos Ministros e o Salão da Comitiva e Segurança foram transportados da Estação da Cruz de Pedra, onde se encontravam, para o Entroncamento. O primeiro foi adaptado a Comboio Socorro, uma composição destinada a ocorrer a acidentes, descarrilamentos e avarias no caminho de ferro, tarefa que cumpriu durante cerca de vinte anos. O segundo, a par da Carruagem dos Jornalistas e do Furgão afeto ao comboio presidencial, foram guardados num antigo depósito do Complexo Ferroviário do Entroncamento. 17

11 PROJECT OF CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION The project Presidential Tours Conservation and Restoration of vehicles used for the Presidential Train was candidate for the PIT Intervention Program for Tourism of Tourism of Portugal and QREN / MaisCentro Program / Networks for Competitiveness and Innovation, being both applications approved, with the celebration of the financing contracts in August 2010 and November 2011, respectively. The existence of co-financing was essential to the project. The key solution for a better understanding and interpretation of the Presidential Train was the full restoration of the six vehicles that comprised the Presidential Train, according to the look it would have on the 1970 s, which is the last known image of the Presidential Train as such. In an unprecedented project in Portugal, the vehicles were recovered from the mechanical, technical and patrimonial point of view, in order to proceed with the reorganization of this special composition, according to its valences and historicalcultural values. In addition to the structural revision, it was also necessary to proceed with the conservation and restoration of the entire Integrated Heritage, particularly in terms of the reintegration and rehabilitation of the interiors, coatings and equipment, together with the reproduction of some of the missing objects according to the models of those times. This work, which involved a thorough process of research, was developed by EMEF Empresa de Manutenção de Equipamento Ferroviário, at the General Workshops of Contumil, in conjunction with the Office of Conservation and Restoration of the National Railway Museum. From this important set of vehicles, at the time prior to the intervention, only the Carriage of the Head of State, on exhibition at the Rotunda de Locomotivas at the National Railway Museum, and the Carriage Restaurant, stored in the old Museum Center of Estremoz, were in a minimal state of conservation, but without traffic conditions. The remaining vehicles denounced a high state of deterioration, for having been kept for several years in an old Deposit, exposed to weathering and vandalism. Apart from these, the Carriage of the Delegation and Security remained for about two decades engaged in the Relief Train of Entroncamento and has thus been completely distorted from its original function. In some cases, due to the high state of deterioration of the vehicles, it was necessary to proceed with their complete reconstruction, both mechanical and physical, which involved the execution of tasks of great complexity requiring very specific know-how and highly skilled labor. PROJETO DE CONSERVAÇÃO E RESTAURO O projeto Passeios Presidenciais Conservação e Restauro dos veículos afectos ao Comboio Presidencial foi candidato ao PIT Programa de Intervenção do Turismo, do Turismo de Portugal e ao QREN/Programa MaisCentro/Redes para a Competitividade e Inovação, tendo ambas as candidaturas sido aprovadas e os respetivos contratos de financiamento assinados em agosto de 2010 e novembro de 2011, respetivamente. A existência de cofinanciamento foi imprescindível para a execução do projeto. Consagrou-se o restauro integral dos seis veículos que incorporaram o Comboio Presidencial, solução essencial para a sua melhor compreensão e interpretação, de acordo com o aspeto que este teria na década de 70, última imagem que se conhece do Comboio Presidencial enquanto tal. Num projeto inédito em Portugal, os veículos foram recuperados do ponto de vista mecânico, técnico e patrimonial, de modo a proceder à reorganização desta composição especial, segundo as suas valências e valor histórico e cultural. Para além da revisão estrutural, foi igualmente necessário proceder à conservação e restauro de todo o Património Integrado, nomeadamente ao nível da reintegração dos interiores e da recuperação de revestimentos e equipamentos, a par da reprodução de alguns dos objetos em falta, em função dos modelos existentes na época. Este trabalho, que envolveu um profundo processo de investigação, foi desenvolvido pela EMEF Empresa de Manutenção de Equipamento Ferroviário, nas Oficinas Gerais de Contumil, em articulação com o Serviço de Conservação e Restauro do Museu Nacional Ferroviário. Deste importantíssimo conjunto de veículos, no momento anterior à intervenção, apenas se encontravam em estado mínimo de conservação, mas sem condições de circulação, o Salão do Chefe de Estado, em exposição na Rotunda de Locomotivas do Museu Nacional Ferroviário, e o Salão Restaurante, resguardado no antigo Núcleo Museológico de Estremoz. Os restantes veículos denunciavam um elevado estado de deterioração, por terem sido mantidos, durante vários anos, num antigo Depósito, expostos à intempérie e a atos de vandalismo. Para além destes, o Salão da Comitiva e Segurança manteve-se durante cerca de duas décadas afeto ao Comboio Socorro do Entroncamento, tendo assim sido completamente desvirtuado da sua função original. Nalguns casos, em virtude do elevado estado de deterioração dos veículos, foi necessário proceder à reconstrução total, mecânica e física, o que envolveu a execução de tarefas de grande complexidade e que requereram know-how específico e mão de obra altamente qualificada

12 Preparação e Mobilização dos Veículos Vehicle Preparation and Mobilization In November 2010, in Entrocamento, took place the preparation of the first four vehicles that comprised the Presidential Train and their march to the place of restoration. The deplacement from Entroncamento to the site where the repairs would take place involved the Carriage of the Head of State, the Carriage of the Delegation and Security, the Carriage of Journalists and the Wagon that, after technically prepared for the journey, were towed up to Contumil. Later, in 2011, the Carriage of Ministers and Carriage Restaurant were deplaced to the same place. Adopted Procedures Structure: Review of all mechanical and electrical components of the vehicle, required for its operation and mobilization, particularly in terms of traction and braking systems, and also the electrical installation, heating system and pipes for water circulation and lubrication, among other necessary elements. Complementary Examination and Analysis Methods: Ultrasonic examination and re-profiling of the train roads for the march. Body: Treatment or rebuilding of all structural metallic elements and interior and exterior wood coatings, according to the original. Etching, painting and protection of the surface according to the color scheme adopted at the time. Components: Repair or reconstruction of inter-carriage passages, doors, windows and shutters. Treatment of fittings and all other functional, structural or support elements, respecting the nature and the profile of the original materials. Integrated Heritage: Restoration and reproduction, based on pre-existing models and on the information provided by data sheets or other records, of toilets and support furniture such as tables, chairs, sofas, bunk beds, luggage racks and lamps, among other kinds of furniture, objects and textiles (carpets, upholstery and curtains), intended to fill and adorn the various compartments of each vehicle. 20 Em novembro de 2010, no Entroncamento, teve lugar a preparação dos primeiros quatro veículos constituintes do Comboio Presidencial e a sua marcha para o local de restauro. O transporte do Entroncamento para o local de reparação envolveu o Salão do Chefe de Estado, o Salão da Comitiva de Segurança, a Carruagem dos Jornalistas e o Furgão afecto que, depois de tecnicamente preparados para a deslocação, foram rebocados até Contumil. Posteriormente, já em 2011, juntaram-se-lhes o Salão dos Ministros e o Salão Restaurante. Procedimentos Adotados Estrutura: Revisão de todas as componentes mecânicas e elétricas do veículo, necessárias ao seu funcionamento e mobilização, nomeadamente ao nível dos sistemas de tração e frenagem, mas também da instalação elétrica, sistema de aquecimento e tubagens para a circulação de água e lubrificação, entre outros elementos necessários. Métodos Complementares de Exame e Análise: Exame ultrassónico e reperfilamento dos rodados, para efeitos de marcha. Carroçaria: Tratamento ou reconstituição de todos os elementos metálicos estruturantes e das divisórias e revestimentos interiores e exteriores em madeira, conforme o original. Decapagem, pintura e proteção das superfícies, de acordo com o esquema de cores adoptado na época. Componentes: Reparação ou reconstituição dos passadiços de intercomunicação, portas, janelas e estores. Tratamento de ferragens e de todos os outros elementos funcionais, estruturantes ou de suporte, respeitando a natureza e perfil dos materiais de origem. Património Integrado: Restauro ou reprodução, com base nos modelos preexistentes e da informação fornecida pelas fichas técnicas ou outros registos, de sanitários e peças de mobiliário de apoio, tais como mesas, poltronas, sofás, beliches, porta- -bagagens e candeeiros, entre outros diversos tipos de móveis, objetos e materiais têxteis (alcatifas, estofos e cortinas), destinados a preencher e a adornar os diferentes compartimentos de cada veículo. 21

19 Preparation for circulation in the National Railway Network The restoration of the Presidential Train was the first major full restoration project (for circulation) promoted by FMNF. The approval of circulation of vehicles with passenger requires the performance of several complex and highly accurate tests, for the safeguarding of the passengers safety. FUTURE OF THE PRESIDENTIAL TRAIN The vehicles that are part of the Portuguese Presidential Train can be visited in the National Railway Museum in the city of Entroncamento, when not in circulation. The Museum, in cooperation with other partner organizations, is planning various cultural tourism trips to several regions of the country.
