Exercise REP/REX Robotic Exercises The existing challenge Military Academia-Industry interaction Lots of room for improvement Mismatch between requirements and capabilities Need for common understanding on Unmanned Systems Academic understanding and perception of military needs Military perception of academic offer and technology state of the art Join all communities in a common exercise, aboard a ship. Elevate the TRL of projects and developments 11
Exercise REP/REX REP and REX REP - Rapid Environmental Picture (later Recognized Environmental Picture) NATO exercise transferred to Portugal at the last minute in 2010 Use of a landing ship for testing Autonomous Vehicles (underwater, surface, air) Foster innovation and understanding between different teams Military expertise brings safety, procedures, support, operational know-how, and assets (ships and divers) Academic expertise brings innovation, state of the art technology, scientific know-how, expertise in specific fields. REX Robotic Exercise About 70 researchersin 2014 from Portugal RTOs, industry, academia internationals - CMRE, Spain, Belgium, etc. 12
R&D - Lessons learned and Challenges Challenges Match needs with technological development Be part of the development Aquire competences in "unknown" environments (space, ciber, ) Follow the state of the art High level of academic education -> applied Researchers Update Systems and guarantee compatibility Low expenditures (CAPEX, OPEX) Development of military capabilities Technology transfer
