- identify the several philosophical doctrines that aim to sustain and characterize the idea of citizenship in the broader context of the social and political experience, as well as the nature, functions and limits of the State, taking as a starting point social contract theory, and the proto-democratic and republican tradition. - to situate social and political philosophy in the field of philosophical studies and social sciences in general. 6.Conteúdos programáticos Tema: A revolução político-filosófica da Idade Moderna Do absolutismo à democracia 1. Introdução à disciplina. Natureza, objectivos e métodos da filosofia política. 2. Os antecedentes : breves notas sobre a filosofia política na Idade Clássica e na Idade Média; do princípio monárquico ao absolutismo clássico. 3. Primeiros esboços de uma ruptura: Thomas Hobbes. 4. Fundamentos de uma nova ideologia: John Locke; Jean-Jacques Rousseau. 5. Liberalism in Europe: Montesquieu, Tocqueville and Stuart Mill. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular O programa é coerente com os objectivos da unidade curricular porque explora linhas temáticas fundamentais para permitir aos alunos desenvolver as competências acima elencadas. O objectivo de situar a filosofia social e política no campo dos estudos filosóficos e das ciências sociais é alcançado no ponto 1, que dá conta da natureza, objectivos e métodos da filosofia social e política. A análise dos grandes temas da filosofia social e política na Idade Moderna, com a ruptura face ao modelo absolutista predominante e o desenvolvimento de doutrinas democráticas, é abordado no estudo acompanhado dos grandes autores modernos: Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau e os liberais europeus. Ao longo desse estudo, é também possível identificar as diferentes doutrinas filosóficas que procuram caracterizar a cidadania no horizonte mais vasto da
experiência social e política, bem como a natureza, funções e limites do Estado, a partir da tradição contratualista, proto-democrática e republicana. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The syllabus is coherent with the curricular unit s objectives because it explores fundamental themes and lines of investigation that allow the students to develop the competences outlined above. The objective to situate social and political philosophy in the field of philosophical studies and social sciences is accomplished in the first item, which deals with the aims and methods of political philosophy. The analysis of the main themes of political philosophy of the Modern Age, critical of the predominance of absolute rule theories and favorable to democratic doctrines, is addressed in the study of the main modern authors: Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and the European liberals. During that study, we identify the philosophical doctrines that characterize citizenship in the broader context of the social and political experience, as well as the nature and functions of the State, taking as a starting point social contract theory, and the protodemocratic and republican tradition. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) Dá-se preferência ao método expositivo, para fazer um levantamento dos temas a discutir, apresentar as doutrinas dos autores estudados e enunciar a relevância dessas mesmas reflexões para compreender fenómenos contemporâneos. Simultaneamente, promovem-se ao longo das aulas processos dialógicos, nomeadamente através do comentário de textos pelos alunos, cuja participação é aliás fomentada mesmo ao longo do momento expositivo (com observações críticas, pedidos de esclarecimento, etc.). A avaliação será baseada no trabalho regular do aluno, avaliando a sua capacidade de trabalho e investigação, e as suas competências na identificação crítica de uma problemática e no seu desenvolvimento escrito ou oral. Elementos globais de avaliação: - Dois testes presenciais sobre as matérias do programa (40% + 40%) - Entrevista oral (10%) - Avaliação contínua, incluindo assiduidade e participação activa nas discussões sobre os temas do programa nas aulas (10%). 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Preference is given to the expository teaching method, in order to enumerate the themes to discuss, present the main doctrines of the authors of the program and highlight the relevance of those reflections to understand contemporary phenomena. At the same time, we promote during classes dialogical processes, namely through commentary of texts by the students, whose participation is stimulated even during the expository period (by questions, critical observations, clarifications, etc.).
Evaluation is based in the regular work of the student, judging its work and research capacities, and its competences in the critical identification of a determined problem, and the way the student develops it in writing or oral form. The use of combined techniques the expository teaching method and the stimulation of the students intervention, in its various aspects (participation in classes, commentary of texts, home readings, individual research, etc.) is adequate to the mentioned objectives.
