The collection of Salvador de Toledo Piza Jr., housed at the Museu de Zoologia Luiz de Queiroz, was donated to the Instituto Butantan in These types received a new accession number and are listed under this new affiliation for the first time. Key words: Arachnida, Harvestmen, Neotropics, taxonomy Introduction Currently, the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo (IBSP) is responsible for more than 93% of the production of antivenom and vaccines in Brazil and is recognized as one the largest research centers of its kind worldwide. It is well known for its research on venomous animals, biodiversity, systematics, ecology, natural history, clinical aspects and poisoning mechanisms (Santos & Canter 2006, Silva 2006, Kumar 2010). The institute houses four zoological collections: the Richard Hoge Herpetological Collection, the Arachnida and Myriapoda Collection, the Medical Entomology Collection and the Acarology Collection, which enable taxonomical, biological and evolutionary history studies (Martins 1994, Silva 2006). These collections are important for research, technological development, immunobiological production and disseminating information for public health (Calleffo & Barbarini 2007). The study of Arachnology at the IBSP started with Vital Brazil Mineiro da Campanha, who began studying scorpionism in 1905, due to the large number of recorded envenomation accidents with scorpions (Fonseca 1954). Later, in 1924, Jean Vellard began studying arachnidism, systematics, biology and venoms, which resulted in the production of a therapeutic serum and the start of a collection of scorpions and spiders (Fonseca 1954). The harvestmen collection at IBSP was initiated around 1930 (Mello-Leitão 1934). At that time, it was a common practice for the local population to bring in animals in exchange for antivenom. The harvestmen were commonly confused with spiders but accepted by the Institute for exchange. Among the researchers that contributed to the growth and development of the collection we call attention to Cândido Firmino de Mello-Leitão. During the first stages, Mello-Leitão identified most of the available material and described several new species of Eupnoi (Mello- Leitão 1935b, 1938), and of Laniatores of the families Cosmetidae (Mello-Leitão 1935b) and Gonyleptidae (Mello- Leitão 1934), mainly from the subfamilies Pachylinae (Mello-Leitão 1935a, 1939) and Gonyleptinae (Mello-Leitão 1934, 1935a, 1935b). He also published identification keys for both families (Mello-Leitão 1935c, 1940). In 2009, the Instituto Butantan received the donation of the private collection of Salvador de Toledo Piza, previously housed at the Museu de Zoologia da Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, Piracicaba, São Paulo (MZLQ). Piza studied harvestmen systematics from 1936 to He described several new species of Eupnoi (Piza 1946), Cosmetidae (Piza 1938b, 1947), Stygnidae (Piza 1938b) and Gonyleptidae, mainly of the Pachylinae (Piza 1938c, 1943a, 1947) and Gonyleptinae (Piza 1938b, 1938c, 1943a). 2 identification keys for species of the genus Paragonyleptes Roewer, 1913a (Piza 1942b) and described male and female reproductive systems of some Gonyleptidae species (Piza 1938a). When talking about the IBSP Harvestmen Collection, Benedito Soares also is to be acknowledged. He revised all material deposited since 1934 and provided the first catalogue, listing 45 species, stating types, synonymies and all locality data and citing discrepancies between previous articles (Soares 1945). Until 2010 the harvestmen collection included approximately 10,500 vials, with over 37,000 specimens. The type collection included material of 90 species mainly described by Piza and Mello-Leitão, as well as of a few, more recently described species by R. Pinto-da-Rocha, M.B. DaSilva, C. Bragagnolo, A. Mendes and H. Yamaguti. It is the third largest collection of the group in Brazil, surpassed only by the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP) and the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ), with approximately 300 and 800 types, respectively. Nevertheless, part of the IBSP Collection was lost in the fire that destroyed the accommodation building of Herpetology and Arachnology, in May, 15, 2010 (Kumar 2010). An estimated 80% of the Herpetology Collection and approximately 30% of the Arachnida and Myriapoda collections were destroyed, including several rare or extinct species and historic specimens over 100 years old (Kumar 2010, Machado-Filho et al. 2011). Of the 91 types, 69 were retrieved and 22 have to be considered lost. It is still possible that some types remain amongst the non type material that was saved from the fire. This material is currently stored in a warehouse and will be analyzed and organized by the researchers associated with the collection once the new collection building is completed. The aim of this study is to present a list of harvestmen types that have been deposited in the Arachnida and Myriapoda Collection of the Instituto Butantan, and giving their status after the fire. Material and methods This catalogue of Opiliones type material was organized according to their classification hierarchical order and subsequently alphabetically, using the original name of the species. Information on the original publication (author and year) is given, followed by the type status (holotype, paratype, allotype, etc.), gender and the number of specimens, the collection locality (city, state, country) and the IBSP collection number in parentheses. The specimens from Toledo Piza s collection were incorporated in the IBSP collection and received new numbers, but the original labels and numbering from the MZLQ collection were preserved to enable proper identification and are listed for completeness. For syntypes that are not deposited in the IBSP Collection, please refer to Kury (2003). When necessary, differences between the labels, the collection registry and the original publication are mentioned. If the type was located in the collection, or if the loan invoice is correctly filed, it is marked as available. If the specimen is not in the collection and its location is unknown we therefore use the expression not available. Pictures to document the condition of the material were taken at the Departamento de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, using a digital camera model Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS and a Leica DFC 290 digital camera mounted on LEICA M125. Extended focal range images were assembled using Leica Application Suite software version Only pictures of type material presently available and not on loan were taken. Junior synonym of Pristocnemis farinosus (Mello-Leitão, 1922) (see Soares 1943a). The original description mistakenly mentions a female holotype. However, examination of the specimen showed it is in fact a male. The author probably confused the sex due to the fact that is very slightly armed. Available. The vial contains also 2 non type of the species. The male holotype of H. anitagaribaldiae, from Parque Ecológico Spitzkopf, Blumenau, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, was erroneously listed in the original publication as being deposited in IBSP.
