FGV DIREITO RIO 3 1. Welcome to FGV DIREITO RIO Created in 2002, FGV DIREITO RIO was an answer to the market demands for professionals capable of thinking law in practice, seeking legal solutions for everyday problems of Brazilian society. Since then, the school has divided its activities between teaching and research. It is always based on four major focuses: legislative actions, social commitment, internationalization, and innovation. The school develops groundbreaking law projects, contributing to the reform of Brazil s judiciary; and, in the field of new technologies and law, it contributes with free software projects and innovation in the area of intellectual property, through important partnerships with Brazil s Ministry of Justice, Harvard University and Stanford University, among others. 2. First steps in Brazil 2.1 Identity Card for Foreigners A foreigner admitted to Brazil at a permanent, temporary or asylum condition is required to register with the Federal Police, within thirty days of entrance. The identity card for foreigners (RNE) is the main document of the foreigner resident in Brazil, and identifies his/her residence status (temporary or permanent) and the period of stay. FGV DIREITO RIO 4 Hostels - as one of the world's top tourist destinations, Rio de Janeiro offers a large range of hostels and bed and breakfasts. Getting to know Rio de Janeiro 3.1 About the City The second-largest city in Brazil, coming in second only to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro is a city filled with a diverse mixture of sights, with mountainous backdrops, beautiful beaches and Brazilian shanty towns (favelas).
