Objectivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências a desenvolver pelos estudantes) A unidade curricular visa a consolidação dos conhecimentos adquiridos em Língua Inglesa III, alargando o âmbito dos temas tratados e diversificando o trabalho de estruturas linguísticas. Propõe-se um equilíbrio das competências de comunicação receptivas e produtivas, ao nível da oralidade e da escrita. O aluno de Língua Inglesa IV deve ser um utilizador independente da língua de nível C1/1 (QECRL), sendo capaz de: 1. Compreender um leque amplo de textos exigentes, reconhecendo os seus significados explícitos e implícitos e as suas marcas enunciativas. 2. Reproduzir e comentar pontos de vista veiculados nesses textos, recorrendo a linguagem apropriada. 3. Exprimir-se de forma fluente e espontânea na oralidade, sobre uma variedade de assuntos da atualidade internacional, fundamentando a sua opinião. 4. Produzir textos estruturados sobre temas da atualidade internacional, demonstrando os conhecimentos adquiridos em aula. 5. Elaborar um portefólio de trabalhos realizados dentro e fora da aula.
Learning outcomes of the curricular unit The course aims at consolidating linguistic skills acquired in English Language III, and at broadening the scope of the topics and linguistic structures handled in class. A balance is proposed between receptive and productive communicative skills, both spoken and written. Students should finish the course as proficient users of English at Level C1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and, consequently, be able to: 1. Understand a wide range of demanding texts, recognizing their explicit and implicit meanings and its enunciation features. 2. Summarize and comment points of view conveyed in those texts, using appropriate linguistic structures. 3. Express him/herself fluently and spontaneously when speaking about a range of topics related to current international affairs. 4. Produce clear and well-structured texts about topics in international affairs, demonstrating knowledge acquired in class. 5. Produce a portfolio of work and research done in and beyond class. 6. Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da unidade curricular Os objetivos/competências previstos distribuem-se por uma escala de recepção a produção comunicativa numa área temática complexa como são as relações internacionais. Pretende-se que os alunos comuniquem com confiança acerca de temas da atualidade, reproduzindo no seu discurso conhecimentos veiculados nos canais informativos e formulando com segurança pontos de vista adequadamente fundamentados. Deste modo, o desenvolvimento desta competência comunicativa receptiva e produtiva, apoiado pelo alargamento vocabular nas áreas temáticas e o trabalho de estruturas gramaticais, será transversal à progressão nos temas propostos. Ainda assim, podem reconhecer-se momentos de interação específica entre os objetivos propostos e os temas tratados: O objectivo 1 será abordado em todos os temas; os objectivos 2 e 3 relacionam-se com os temas gramaticais 2 e 3; o objetivo 4 relaciona-se com o tema gramatical 3. O objectivo 5, de natureza metodológica, acompanhará o trabalho ao longo de toda a unidade. Demonstration of the coherence between the syllabus and the objectives of the curricular unit The objectives/competences listed above show a progression from receptive to productive communication skills, applied to a thematic area as complex as international relations. Students are expected to communicate with confidence about current international affairs, reproducing and paraphrasing knowledge conveyed by relevant informative sources and stating their own opinions, which should be adequately founded. This receptive and productive communicative competence will be developed across the range of topics proposed, and supported by work aimed at broadening active vocabulary and improving relevant grammar structures. Nonetheless it is possible to acknowledge certain moments of specific interaction between the proposed objectives and topics: objective 1 will be approached in all topics; objectives 2 and 3 are related with grammar topics 2 and 3, objective 4 is related with grammar issue 3. Objective 5 concerns learning methodology and will be developed throughout the whole curricular unit. 8. Metodologia de ensino (avaliação incluída) Ensino: As aulas farão um tratamento equilibrado das quatro competências comunicativas ao nível da recepção (compreensão escrita e oral) e da produção (expressão escrita e oral). Entre as atividades previstas estão a leitura de textos informativos e noticiosos, apresentação e discussão dos temas dos textos, compreensão de podcasts e vídeos noticiosos e documentais, bem como a apresentação oral de temas selecionados, e a redação de comentários de dimensão variável. As tarefas e as várias formas sociais de trabalho (individual, pares, grupo) procuram simular em aula e no trabalho em casa contextos autênticos de comunicação. Será ainda desenvolvido trabalho de consolidação de vocabulário e estruturas. Avaliação: Segue-se o modelo de avaliação contínua, que inclui os seguintes elementos: 1. Participação nas várias tarefas propostas em aula, incluindo apresentações orais: 25% 2. Trabalhos escritos: 25% 3. Portefólio (incluindo 1 teste de Gramática e Vocabulário): 20%

Um teste no fim do semestre: 30% Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Teaching: Classes will have a balanced focus on the four communicative skills, both receptive (reading and listening comprehension) and productive (speaking, writing). Among the activities foreseen are reading informative texts and news reports, presenting and discussing the topics of those texts, listening comprehension of podcasts and news videos, oral presentation of selected topics and writing commentaries of variable length. Both tasks and social forms (individual, pair and group work) aim at simulating in class authentic communication contexts. Activities will be developed in order to consolidate vocabulary and grammar structures. Assessment: A model of continuous assessment will be adopted, which includes the following elements: 1. Active participation in the tasks proposed in class, including oral presentations: 25% 2. Written assignments: 25% 3. Portfolio (including a Grammar and Vocabulary Test): 20% 4. Final test: 30% 9. Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular A unidade curricular visa a consolidação do trabalho realizado em Língua Inglesa III e o desenvolvimento equilibrado das quatro competências comunicativas de base. Esta opção reflete-se na organização das aulas, que serão teórico-práticas, e nas tarefas a desenvolver. Relativamente à compreensão e expressão escrita, os alunos serão confrontados com textos de complexidade expositiva e argumentativa acerca dos temas selecionados para a unidade. Serão propostas tarefas de verificação da compreensão escrita, de síntese e paráfrase da informação e ainda a formulação de comentários acerca dos temas tratados. Outros exercícios em aula focarão o trabalho de vocabulário, a fim de permitir aos alunos formularem as suas ideias e pontos de vista acerca dos temas em discussão. Quanto à oralidade, os alunos realizarão tarefas de compreensão oral a partir de materiais autênticos, como podcasts e vídeos noticiosos, bem como debates e entrevistas. Na perspetiva da produção, será trabalhada na unidade curricular a técnica de apresentação oral em inglês e a capacidade de expor temas complexos, de forma clara e bem estruturada. Será ainda dado espaço ao aperfeiçoamento das formas gramaticais e sintáticas de língua inglesa já adquiridas, incidindo em particular no conjuntivo, os verbos com preposições e ainda nas conjunções e outros recursos de ligação sintática. O trabalho fora da aula será encorajado, nomeadamente através da elaboração de um portefólio, que será ocasião para os alunos aprofundarem e organizarem os seus próprios instrumentos de aprendizagem. O portfólio incluirá um glossário de termos relevantes baseado no trabalho com os textos e outros documentos explorados nas aulas, tarefas de escrita, uma lista de erros
comuns individuais, pesquisa acerca de um tema proposto e trabalho de gramática. Os instrumentos de avaliação contemplam as diferentes vertentes da unidade curricular, privilegiando o trabalho contínuo e acompanhado, bem como a aprendizagem individual, e ainda o equilíbrio entre a oralidade e a escrita. Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the objectives of the curricular unit The course aims at consolidating the work undertaken in English Language III and at a balanced development of the four basic communicative competences. This option is mirrored in the organization of the classes, which will be theoretical-practical, as well as on the activities that will be developed. Regarding writing (comprehension and expression), students will be exposed to a range of texts of relative argumentative complexity about the topics selected for the unit. They will carry out reading comprehension tasks, as well as summary writing, paraphrasing of the information conveyed in the texts and commentary writing. Other exercises will focus on vocabulary work, so as to allow students to formulate their ideas and points of view about the topics discussed in class. As far as listening and speaking are concerned, students will perform listening comprehension tasks based on authentic materials such as podcasts and news videos, as well as debates and interviews. The course will focus on production: students will improve their presentations skills in English, particularly their ability to present complex topics in a clear, articulate and well structured way. The course will provide opportunity for revising and improving grammar and syntactic structures, in particular the subjunctive, verbs with prepositions and conjunctions and other linking phrases. Moreover students will be encouraged to develop work beyond class, namely by completing a portfolio, which will document their individual learning process. The portfolio will include a glossary of relevant terms based on the texts and other documents studied in class, written assignments, a list of individual common mistakes, research on a given topic and grammar work. The various assessment instruments focus on the different aspects of the curricular unit and they build on oriented and continuous work throughout the course, individual learning style and a balance between oral and written skills. 10.
