History 10 Portuguese Colony Brazil was discovered in 1500 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral and remained a Portuguese Colony until 1822, when it became an independent monarchy, highly centralized and ruled from Rio de Janeiro by an emperor. Republic In 1889 a republic was declared, largely in reaction to the emperor s abolition of slavery. The new constitution was federal; states were virtually autonomous units and little power was left to the central government in Rio. This First Republic endured until 1930, when Getúlio Vargas seized the presidency and gradually centralized government and became a dictator. He was forced to resign at the end of WW II, by a surge of popular feelings and an army coup. A federal republic was declared in 1945, with power again returning to the states. Military Government Increasing instability led the armed forces to overthrow the government in 1964, in an essentially bloodless coup. The resulting military government was highly centralized, authoritarian and repressive, particularly in the early 1970s. The country experienced a great economic development during this period. Before 1980, however, the armed forces began a slow, careful process of disengagement from politics, ultimately turning power back to a civilian administration in 1985. Dilma Rousseff - President Dilma Rousseff is the current President of Brazil. She is the first woman ever to hold the office. Prior to that, in 2005, she also was the first woman to become Chief of State of Brazil, appointed by then President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Re-elected for a 2nd term in 2014. Religions > Most of population is nominally Roman Catholic > There is a growing Protestant evangelical movement > African spiritismis widely practiced, primarily at Northeast region > Many people combine Catholism and Spiritism. Candomble is the most prominent of the African-derived sects (73% Catholic; 13% Protestant; 3% Spirtualist; 2% Oriental; 9% Others) Culture Brazil offers a rich diversity of people, places and experiences. Brazilians are connected by the common bond of Portuguese language and culture. In spite of differences in status and wealth, the Brazilians celebrate their commonality. The Brazilians are spontaneous, friendly and full of enthusiasm. 11
