XXXI ENCONTRO EDUCACIONAL THE NETWORK TOWARDS UNITY FOR HEALTH www.the-networktufh.org Distinguished guests and participants of the 31st Educational Meeting of The Network: Towards Unity for Health, it is our great honor to welcome all of you to Fortaleza. It is worth sharing that Brazil has implemented many social programs to improve the quality of life and health of its population. The government has also improved universal access to education and created new medical schools and other health profession schools in smaller cities, away from the large urban areas. There is still much work to be done by policymakers, political and community leaders, educators, health professionals and many others. We have the common responsibility to assure a better future for our citizens. Following the goals of this noble organization to strengthen health professionals education as a means to achieve quality and cost-effective community health, we look forward to working together during these five days to exchange new ideas, engage in useful discussions and share knowledge and experience. Hopefully, the tropical environment of this city will inspire us to work with friendliness, enthusiasm and optimism. We want to express our thanks to all attending this conference as well as the ones who helped its planning and organization. We are also grateful for the support of the Ministry of Education, Federal University of Ceará, The Network: Towards Unity for Health, the Government of the State of Ceará, the Government of the City of Fortaleza and our other important partners. Let s embrace challenge and unite for change! Ana Estela Haddad Henry de Holanda Campos Chair Persons of the Local Organizing Committee XXXI The Network: Towards Unity for Health Educational Meeting 1

The Secretary-General The Network: TUFH Welcome to all of you at the Annual Meeting of The Network: Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) in Fortaleza, Brazil. Thirteen years after a very interesting conference in Londrina we are back in this wonderful country, that has become an important player in the international developments, being one of the BRIC-countries. During this conference with the theme: Strengthening health professionals education as a policy to improve health, we will explore the important linkages between the ability of institutions for health professionals education, to respond to the call by The Lancet Commission, to establish transformational learning in order to achieve more equity. This call challenges the policies of educational institutions at the level of recruitment, undergraduate and post-graduate training, being responsive to the needs of populations. The conference will further explore to what extent progress has been made in order to put into practice the Global Consensus on Social Accountability of our training programs. Moreover, the conference will look at the demographic and epidemiological transitions that, both in developed and developing countries, challenge the traditional paradigms of a health system based on responsiveness, to acute problems. However, as the Ebola-epidemic illustrates clearly, we may not forget to maintain our readiness to react to new challenges, whilst building a population-based health system more and more orientated towards the care for chronic conditions. Especially in this respect, the conference will invite you to put people and patients at the center of our reflection, looking at ways of improving health literacy, empowerment, interprofessional cooperation and Intersectoral Action for Health, addressing the upstream causes of ill-health and the Social Determinants of Health. During the last years: The Network: Towards Unity for Health, has evolved towards a network of networks, bringing different organizations involved in innovation of health professional education together: FAIMER, the Training for Health Equity Network, Global Health through Education Training and Service and many others. By doing so, The Network: TUFH wants to act as a hub where reflection, exchange of best practices, and not to forget human interaction may contribute to a worldwide learning community of practice. I would like to invite the participants, to take all the opportunities of this conference, to interact, to question, to explore and to open new perspectives. We thank the Brazil government, Ministries of Education and of Health and the Universidade Federal do Ceará for their support in order to make this Conference happen. Finally, do not forget to enjoy this beautiful country, to discover the enthusiasm of the people and let you inspire from both nature and culture. Time has come for action. Let us embrace the challenge en unite for change! Prof. Jan De Maeseneer, MD, Ph.D. Secretary-General, The Network: Towards Unity for Health. 2

The Network: TUFH Secretariat Dear colleagues, We are very happy to welcome you to the 2014 Annual Conference of The Network: Towards Unity For Health being held on November 19th to 23rd in Fortaleza, Brazil. This year the guiding theme for the conference is: Strengthening Health Professions Education as a Policy to Improve Health. The linkage between Health Professions Education and Health Policy has always been an important one for The Network: TUFH. This becomes even more relevant and interesting when taking into account the Brazilian context. This provides a very appropriate starting point to encourage discussion and debate. We have composed a program that will bring you knowledge, insight and excitement. On any day you will find ample elements that will match your interest, get you engaged and, hopefully, make you jump out of your chair. Again, we are thrilled to share with you the result of good spirit and collaboration with the Organizing Committee, our Co-host and our Partners. Welcome! Warmest and Kindest regards, Hilde Cnudde Office Manager, The Network: TUFH Maarten Declercq Executive Director, The Network: TUFH 3
