What we are going to be talking about this time is the Blues Scale. I am sure most of you have heard of it. In fact I am sure that most of you are playing it already. We did talk about it already in one of the earlier lessons where we talked about it just in Position One. What we are going to go through a little bit more now is not just what the scale is but how we add the note in, the different places we can add the note and also how you might use it. First of all, what is the Blues Scale? The Blues Scale is exactly the same as the Minor Pentatonic scale but it also includes the flattened fifth degree which in this case in the key of A Minor, because we are learning all our blues in the key of A Minor for now, is the note E flat. If you think back to you previous lesson when we talked about the scales, you hopefully remember that we had this little scale like this in Position One for the Blues Scale... 2 Just put a little accent to make sure you remember which note is the Blues note, or Blue note as it is usually called. Some really important things to know about the Blue note. It is a bit of a funny note. You don't want to hang about on it for too long. If you finish a lick (phrase) on the blue note it is always going to sound a little bit wrong. Sometimes wrong can be cool if you want it to deliberately be jarring and Urgghhhh create a little bit of tension, it can be a good thing to end on a Blue note. Now, a good example here, using this... This note which is the eighth fret of the third string with the little finger usually. It's the kind of thing where you might go... Just for a second... You would not hang around on it a lot. It can be quite good here, as part of a run, to go... That's just using fifth fret, seventh fret, eighth fret on the third string and then... Hitting that one note E on the second string, fifth fret. And then back down again... It's quite a nice fancy trick there to get that one in. Another good little trick that you can try is using your third finger and sliding your third finger up and back a fret. Just from your regular Pentatonic... When we have hit the seventh fret of the third string there with the third finger we are just sliding it up one fret and back. Onto the Blue note and off again... And it would fit as part of whatever you are playing... Just within the scale and your licks you can stick that in as a little twiddle (phrase). Sounds really cool. 3 Now we didn't talk about this before but you can actually find the Blue note in another place which is a very cool spot as well. And that is on the fourth fret of the second string. It is exactly the same note... The reason I would not have talked about it before is because it does not fit into the regular fingering of the Minor Pentatonic. It is behind where the first finger is and you have no fingers to get there. But the trick that you might want to try is using your first finger to slide back to the Blue note and back again... And it doesn't really move you out of position because you are using the same finger to slide you back and then back up to the note again. That should help you out with a little trick. Just one last little blues trick I want to talk about in Position One. If you start here with your first finger on the fifth fret of the fifth string the Blue note is one fret higher on the sixth fret of the fifth string... That works really nice as a little hammer on and flick off especially if you follow it by using your little finger on the eighth fret of the thickest string... The timing of that lick can be quite difficult... You got to leave that first note and go da da dum really quickly at the end... All sorts of little tricks that you can start to muck (play) around with there using that second finger. That's quite an easy place to find it. It is definitely worth practising that one. Hammer on with the little finger on the eleventh fret, flick it off and then flick off your third finger back to the eighth fret... 5 Lots of different ways of using that Blue note. I should point out there is one other place where the Blue note is found. If you are in Position Two, first finger, seventh fret of the fifth string you could also slide that back a fret... Just like we did before in Position One on the second string. You can do the same thing on the fifth string... Used a lot less because you don't tend to play blues licks that far down the neck that often. Of course sometimes you do but not very often. So just be aware of that one. Have a little bit of a play about. Várias formas diferentes de usar essa nota Blue. Eu devo mencionar que existe outro lugar onde a nota Blue pode ser encontrada. It is good to get it down as best you can. But remember I don't generally recommend practising the Blues scale up and down. Just get used to using that Blue note and incorporate using that into your Minor Pentatonic licks. A escala Blues é realmente muito importante. É bom praticá-la o máximo que puder. It is kind of like a spice, adding a bit of dissonance to your sound. And too much of spice in your cooking ruins the dish and makes you feel a bit like oh, it's the Blues scale again. Leave it as like whoa, that's an interesting sound!, a bit tense. It is quite important to learn how to use these spices well.
