Rafael Alberti Released in 1961, L année dernière à Marienbad [Last Year in Marienbad] represents one of the highpoints of a certain understanding of the relationships between literature and cinema. This is because Resnais film is not an adaptation of a literary text, according to the usual model, which almost always comes from the narrative domain, and, more often than not, from that of the novel but is, rather, a work which has been thought out from a text which was deliberately written to be transformed into film by Resnais; it is because the director s work does not arise from the consecration, be it canonical or commercial, of a particular book, but emerges or results from the dialogue between a text and a piece of writing, even though that text, in accordance with that writing, cannot be described as the plot of the film; it is because it mobilizes two creators, on an equal footing, so to speak, who represent experimental trends in the specific art of each one; it is because the film establishes the dialogue between literature and cinema, which was so decisive for the surrealist vanguard, and so decisive in widening the frontiers between the literary and the cinematic; it is because Robbe- Grillet made a book from the film text a ciné-roman, striving to give it an autonomy which was in fact lost for good after Resnais film, as the very term cine-novel makes clear; and finally, it is because in his own work Robbe-Grillet establishes a profound dialogue between literature and cinema, both in his novelistic texts and in his films. The conference Dialogues in Marienbad. Relationships between Literature and Cinema proposes to use the work of Resnais / Robbe- Grillet as the major sign of a way of contemplating the broad spectrum of that dialogue, as it traverses the history of the cinema, as an art that, in its most common representation, would, in the twentieth century, assume most of the functions that literature almost always, literature as novel played in nineteenth century society. The aim of the conference is to debate issues such as the following: (i) In what way does the cinema portray that which the nineteenth century novel wished to portray, exhaustively the social whole, the body politic, and what were the relationships, of kinship or opposition, between those two systems of representation; (ii) To what extent is the overwhelming triumph of the narrative structure of the cinema the consequence of the naturalization of the model of the bourgeois novel and what are the consequences of that triumph for the resistance, both conceptual and practical, of the cinema to the possibility of a non-narrative film? (iii) As cinema was based on the 19 th century novel, how did that hamper or delay its dialogue with modern and modernist forms of fiction (those that triumph in 1961, with Marienbad ), expressing a décalage between literature and cinema that calls into question the traditional idea of a synchronization of the system of the arts? (iv) Is the predominance of an idea of plot as the germinating element of a film, and the idea of 4
film as a film with a plot, a triumph of literature or a final illusion? In other words, is the plot still literature? (v) How can one understand the fact that literary studies concentrate hugely on the topic of the adaptation of literary works to the cinema and the historical predominance of an epistemology of the correspondence the film is faithful to or the film betrays the novel and of a semiotic analysis, centred on phenomena of re- and transcoding? (vi) On the other hand, how can one understand the lack of investment of film studies in the literary moment of films which are clearly based on a literary work and their implicit defence of a radical autonomy of the two forms of expression? (vii) Can the specifics of film be conceived historically as a form of resistance to literature and a break from its modes of representation, or, on the contrary, is it impossible to conceive the cinematic without the literary? (viii) If the cinema is images in motion, can its definition eliminate the word, verbal discourse, sound and voice? In order to discuss some of these topics, amongst others, the Department of Modern Languages and Literature of the University of the Azores and the Centre of Portuguese Literature of the University of Coimbra have joined forces to organise this international conference, which will take place in Ponta Delgada on the 29 th, 30 th September and 1 st October, 2011. The conference will also pay tribute to Abílio Hernández Cardoso, Professor of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, and member of the Centre of Portuguese Literature, who, at the end of the 1980 s, was responsible for creating the course subject Literature and Cinema in the Coimbra Faculty of Arts, and who is one of the pioneers of film studies in Portuguese universities. The working languages for the conference will be Portuguese, Spanish and English. The papers presented will be published within at least 12 months of the date of the conference. 5
