3 General objective The aim of this proposal is to develop and integrate a tool failure detection system in order to provide an in process monitoring system during hard to cut piezo composite materials are going to be investigated due to its machinability by means of conventional tools and using diamond CVDpencils and CVD-grinding wheels.

4 Specific objectives Gain knowledge about the cutting mechanisms of grinding piezo-ceramics Creating an in-process monitoring system for microproduction Detecting tool failure during the process Improving piezo ceramics array sensors performance Compare performance of CVD pencil tools with diamond blade on ceramic materials grinding

6 How? Grinding 3D geometries on PZT ceramics

7 The problem Piezoceramics based on zirconate titanate (PZT) and barium titanate (PZB) are hard, fragile and expensive. The 3D structures have high aspect ratio, must be produced on straight geometrical and dimensional tolerances.

8 The problem The tool wear led to a geometrical and dimensional errors The failure of a tool led to a part lost, machine damage Production must assure quality, productivity and low cost
