12 Seguir sempre o rizoma por ruptura, alongar, prolongar, revezar a linha de fuga, fazê-la variar, até produzir a linha mais abstrata e a mais tortuosa, com n dimensões, com direções rompidas. DELEUZE, Gilles, GUATTARI, Félix. Mil Platôs. Capitalismo e Esquizofrenia. Os trabalhos de dois artistas jovens, um de Curitiba e o outro de Nova Iorque, nos propõem uma instigante conversa no encontro promovido pela SIM Galeria em Março desse ano com a exposição Sem Título de André Azevedo e James English Leary. Os dois artistas escancaram e dilatam a tensão externa, periférica entre fibras de um tecido que traja e entre tecidos de órgãos que sentem. Assim como extrapolam os limites convencionais de telas com formatos estritamente geométricos assim como enriquecem seu suporte com mídias que transitam entre o bidimensional expográfico e o tridimensional próprio de seus objetos-tema: o tecido que veste e o corpo que se transveste. O território e seus limites, observados um a partir do outro, são espaços mutuamente percorridos por ambos os artistas. André explora o território mutável do tecido, de múltiplos relevos que aderem o corpo que envolvem até chegar em sua instância menor: o nó. Este que aponta direções e também uma relação de tensão entre superfícies. Percorrem-se territórios têxteis de fronteiras móveis, no sentido empregado por Deleuze, e que se fazem caminhos que se amarram, e mesmo que frouxos, se tensionados, estrangulam passagens. James por sua vez parte dos limites da tela para explorar as adjacências do corpo que toca seu exterior com braços e dedos. O artista se vale da tela retangular para fazer dela o corpo ou o palco em que o corpo pode adentrar. Nesse territóriosuporte moldado para acomodar anexos protuberantes, o corpo é drasticamente fragmentado e reduzido a formas semi-abstratas. Suas pinturas possuem uma inábil estranheza e tensão entre o que se vê, o que elas dizem e o que se deseja sentir com elas. Os dedos e braços são então a interseção dos territórios do corpo e dos sentidos, fronteiras entre o sujeito e o subjetivo. André nasceu em Curitiba e vive e trabalha em São Paulo onde cursa Bacharelado em Artes Visuais na Universidade de Belas Artes de São Paulo. Premiado em 2014 com o 3rd International Emerging Artist Award em Dubai, sua exposições individuais mais recentes incluem trabalhos na Desmoldes, Ateliê Rua São Francisco, Curitiba e Tropical Reminiscence, Joyce Gallery, Pequim, China. Azevedo também trabalhou com moda e ilustração áreas que dialogam com sua produção artística. James nasceu em Chicago e além de artista plástico é também cineasta e educador. Ganhou Tiffany Foundation Award em 2015 No ano anterior foi selecionado como residente de Mana onde atualmente tem seu ateliê. As exposições individuais de James incluem Triple Motherfucker na Vito Schnabel Projects, Nova York, The Joys of Mortgaging Your Future na Boyfriends, Chicago, em 2016 e Rorschach Rhapsody na Galeria Leyendecker, Tenerife, Espanha, em Seu trabalho foi incluído no Whitney Biennial, Greater New York show no MoMA PS1 e no Sundance Film Festival. Always follow the rhizome by rupture; lengthen, prolong, and relay the line of flight; make it vary, until you have produced the most abstract and tortuous of lines of n dimensions and broken directions. Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus, Capitalism and Schizophrenia The work of two young artists, one from Curitiba and the other from New York, offers us an intriguing conversation at the encounter promoted by SIM Galeria next month with the exhibition by André Azevedo and James English Leary. The two artists have opened and dilated the external, peripheral tension between fibers of a surface that dresses and between the surfaces of body parts that sense. They extrapolate the conventional boundaries of strictly geometric formats as they enrich their media transitioning between the two-dimensional of the expographie and the threedimensional character of their subject-objects: the surface that covers and the body surface that uncovers. The territory and its limits, starting with the observation of one or the other, are mutually traversed by both artists. André explores the mutable territory of the fabric, of multiple reliefs that adhere the body they enfold reaching its smaller instance: the knot. Which point directions and also displays a tension relationship between surfaces. Textile territories of moving frontiers are traversed in the sense employed by Deleuze, and paths are made that are tied, and even if loose, when strained could strangle passages. James, in turn, takes off from the canvas boundaries to explore the adjacencies of the body that touches its exterior with arms and fingers. The artist uses the rectangular canvases to make out of it the body itself or even the stage on which the body can enter. In this territory-support, shaped to accommodate protruding attachments, the body is drastically fragmented and reduced to semi-abstract forms. His paintings have an awkward strangeness and tension between what you see, what they say and what you want to feel with them. The fingers and arms are then the intersection of the territories of the body and the senses, boundaries between the subject and the subjective. André was born in Curitiba and lives and works in São Paulo where he takes a Bachelor course of Visual Arts at the University of Fine Arts in São Paulo. Awarded in 2014 with the 3rd International Emerging Artist Award in Dubai, his most recent solo exhibitions include works at Desmoldes, Ateliê Rua São Francisco, Curitiba and Tropical Reminiscence, Joyce Gallery, Beijing, China. Azevedo also worked with fashion and illustration - areas that dialogue with his artistic production. James was born in Chicago and besides being a visual artist is also a filmmaker and educator. He won the Tiffany Foundation Award in 2015 and in the previous year was selected as a resident of Mana where his studio is currently located. 32 TRAMAS, NO PLURAL Samuel Dickow WEBS, IN THE PLURAL Samuel Dickow A máquina de costura no trabalho de André Azevedo funciona como uma extensão de seu corpo, o aparato tecnológico não perde sua função de costurar linhas, mas a operação a qual o artista sujeita a máquina cria uma outra implicação, desenhar paisagens e revelar corpos pictóricos digo revelar, pois o que se apresenta é o verso do desenho que o artista enxerga em seu ato criador. A linha de costura perde sua função ordinária e mundana, aqui ela não se presta a juntar tecidos, ou unir uma parte a outra de um pano, a linha de costura aqui se torna aparentada do desenho, une uma parte a outra de um plano. A superfície que o artista escolhe para dar curso a essa linha que é ao mesmo tempo contínua e fragmentada é a tela de pintura, o que pode ser entendido como um comentário ou indício sobre os termos e a feitura de um objeto ao qual não possui um nome, mas que conversa com um passado recente da história da pintura. A máquina a serviço do artista o interrompe em seu processo, é tão temperamental quanto a escolha do artista por esta ou aquela cor de fio, a matéria independente de não ser tinta, continua a ser um limite e um desafio para o artista. Não se exclui as problemáticas que a pintura carrega consigo enquanto herança histórica. A eliminação do mediador tinta e sua substituição por linha de costura que gera corpo pictórico não resolve mais do que problematiza convenções sobre o que é pintura, a rigor existe um pensamento em pintura, uma tela convencional, paisagens e corres com linhas e corpos pictóricos. Outro momento em que Azevedo remonta a pintura está em suas colagens com tecidos, feitos com fio de solda, os retalhos são sobre postos e então grudados uns aos outros formando uma máquina abstrata que flerta com a paisagem, há em algum lugar uma linha de horizonte que, bem como as linhas de costura também permanecem enquanto elementos compositivos dessa estrutura. The sewing machine in André Azevedo s work functions as an extension of his body. The technological apparatus does not lose its function of sewing, but the operation in which the artist put the machine creates another implication: drawing landscapes and revealing pictorial bodies - I say revealing because what is presented is the drawing backside which the artist sees in his creative act. The sewing thread loses its ordinary and mundane function, since here it does not work to join pieces of fabric, or join one part to another of cloth; the sewing line here becomes similar to the drawing, uniting one part to another of a plan. The surface that the artist chooses to give a way to the line, which is both continuous and fragmented, is the canvas, which can be understood as a comment or a clue about the terms and the making of an object that does not have a name, but which relates to a recent past of the history of painting. The machine used by the artist interrupts him along the process, it is as temperamental as the choice of artist for this or that color for the thread. The material, being ink or not, continues to be a limit and a challenge for the artist. The problems that painting carries as historical heritage remain. The elimination of mediating ink and its replacement by the sewing thread that generates pictorial body does not solve more than discusses conventions about what is painting. There is a thought in painting, a conventional canvas, landscapes and colors with lines and pictorial bodies. Another moment Azevedo refers to painting is in his collages with fabric, made with solder wire, the shreds are overlaid and then glued to each other, forming an abstract machine that flirts with the landscape. Somewhere there is a horizon line which, as well as the sewing lines, also remain as compositional elements of that structure.
