MIT Portugal Program Engineering systems focus: gives emphasis to complex systems that not only have critical technological components, but also have significant economical and sociotechnical level interactions, going beyond traditionally defined engineering disciplines. The following specific fields were identified as the initial focus areas, on top of which an integrative anchor program will be developed: Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing Transportation Systems Sustainable Energy Systems Bio-Engineering Systems
Mapping Sustainable Energy Research Most current methodologies are either highly-aggregated in both space and time (IPCC Scenarios, TIMES) or of extremely fine resolution (Distributed Generation Protection & Control). Meso-scale approaches are needed to assess locally diverse energy strategies, including local dynamics of energy demand (including behavior), and supply such as renewables. Meso-scale approaches addressing the uncertainties of renewables are also needed. Current Time and Space Map of Energy Systems Research

Scientific Areas EP - Energy Planning including Economics TIMES (The Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System) Integrated supply-demand approaches (e.g. LEAP) Endogenous resources assessment and integration Greenhouse Gas Regulation Competitive Energy Markets Energy and Environment in Corporate Sustainability
EN - Energy Networks including Smart Grids Research projects involve several topics focused in the new SmartGrid paradigm, by addressing issues related of the development of active management of distribution grids (involving large scale integration of distributed/renewable energy resources and large scale responsive load engagement) including storage devices and vehicle to grid presence. This includes: 1. Evaluation of impacts and benefits in the network infrastructure (planning and operation levels); 2. Development of new monitoring, control and management hierarchical architectures (includes new functionalities) 3. Identification of market-based strategies for the coordination and control of the different agents and network resources
SBE - Sustainable Built Environment
Green Islands Project Islands represent excellent case studies with which to organize and demonstrate new methodologies for the sustainable and economic transformation of infrastructures, including new challenges such as climate change adaptation and energy security. In the area of sustainable energy systems, solutions must integrate a wide range of supply, demand and networks categories including Aggressive End-Use Efficiency Understanding the spatial and temporal aspects of energy demand Diversify Domestically Building upon a detailed understanding of energy resource dynamics. Modernize Energy Networks Design and investment in smart networks, to handle dynamic energy supplies and demands
Green Islands: The Challenge The Challenge is: Technical Social Economical Renewable Energy Supply
Green Islands: Scoping Scenarios Use of available data and the TIMES Model to develop reference/ evolutionary scenarios for the candidate islands. Flores São Miguel Leverage current MPP energy research to explore innovative, revolutionary energy supply and demand portfolios to lead to robust, cost-effective and implementable Vision Strategies
Green Islands: Scoping Scenarios Elements of the Vision Strategies are put into action via government standards and policies, as well as demonstration and pilot projects which move technologies along and create new markets. Partnering with companies and various government agencies across Scoping, Design and Demonstration stages is essential for high quality and relevant Green Islands research.
