Objetivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências) Proporcionar aos alunos um conhecimento básico da língua inglesa, a transmissão de vocabulário técnico na Engenharia Civil, nas suas várias especialidades. Permitir que os alunos possam adquirir uma maior facilidade na consulta de bibliografia técnica, desenvolver capacidades elementares de compreensão, escrita e de apresentação oral na língua inglesa, fundamentais para o exercício futuro da profissão num mundo cada vez mais globalizado. Learning outcomes of the curricular unit To transmit to the students a basic knowledge of the language, and the technical terminology used in the different disciplines of Civil Engineering. The students must develop a greater easiness in consulting technical texts, by developing elementary skills of comprehension, writing and oral presentation using the language, which is of great importance for the working environment in a globalized world.

Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da UC O estudo de um conjunto de textos técnicos em Inglês com os alunos, que abrangem as especialidades acima indicadas, permite o desenvolvimento da capacidade de compreensão da língua, assim como a aprendizagem do vocabulário técnico fundamental associado a cada uma das especialidades. O estudo dos princípios básicos da gramática inglesa permite que os alunos compreendam melhor a articulação da língua e desta forma adquiram ferramentas para a leitura mais facilitada de textos técnicos e para a expressão na língua inglesa. Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The study by the students of a set of technical texts, covering all the Civil Engineering disciplines mentioned above, allow the development of the skills and competences necessary for the comprehension of the language, as well as for the knowledge of the most important technical vocabulary associated with each one of the disciplines. Also, the study of the basic principles of the grammar allows the students to better articulate the language, and in this way, the students acquire competences for a better reading and comprehension of technical texts, and in general for a better use of the english language.
Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída): As aulas, leccionadas em Inglês, consistem: na leitura de vários textos técnicos durante as aulas, estudo do significado do vocabulário técnico, e para cada texto, os alunos respondem a um exercício que testa a compreensão do mesmo. Os alunos são estimulados a elaborarem individualmente um dicionário próprio com todas os vocábulos técnicos aprendidos; na explicação dos princípios básicos de gramática, para cada uma das vertentes acima indicadas, e os alunos respondem de seguida a exercícios que permitem solidificar a aprendizagem. Durante o semestre, todos os alunos devem obrigatoriamente preparar uma apresentação de um tema relacionado com a Engenharia Civil com a duração mínima de 5 min, e apresentá-la durante a aula. A avaliação é efectuada por exame de escolha múltipla e tem um peso de 100% na nota final. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) During the classes, taught in, several technical texts are read by the students, and the meaning of technical terminology is carefully explained and discussed. For each text, students do a comprehension exercise. Students are stimulated to start and maintain individually a dictionary in which all new technical words are included. Basic rules of grammar are explained, for each one of the areas above, and after students practice doing grammar exercises, to better learn to apply those rules. During the semester, all students must prepare a presentation in an area related to Civil Engineering. The work, to be presented during a lesson, must have a duration of at least 5 min. The evaluation is made through a multiple choice exam which contributes 100% to the final grade.
Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos da unidade curricular A metodologia de ensino aplicada permite que os alunos efectuem trabalho prático em todas as aulas, sendo expostos à língua pela audição e pela leitura, estudando igualmente a terminologia técnica nas várias especialidades da Engenharia Civil. Os alunos desenvolvem uma maior capacidade de compreensão da língua inglesa, na sua vertente técnica aplicada à Engenharia Civil, o que lhes permite no futuro, com relativa facilidade compreender qualquer texto técnico, e também expressarem-se na língua inglesa num contexto profissional.
Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes The teaching methodology is based on having the students exercising the language in every lesson, through reading and hearing, and allows that students can effectively study and learn the technical terminology applied in all disciplines of Civil Engineering. The on-hands work that students do every lesson is beneficial to the learning. In this way, students develop their capability of understanding the language, and the technical terminology applied to Civil Engineering, and this skill will be of great importance in their future professional life, either to easily understand any technical text, or to express themselves in in a professional context.
