UN-GGIM: User case BRAZIL studies
Brazil: Investment in geotechnology for crop analysis and control of pulp and paper Suzano, one of the largest vertically integrated producers of pulp and paper in Latin America, employs several solutions that integrate satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS software to periodically update the information in their forest base comprising more than 770 000 hectares, divided in 7 states in Brazil. The Challenge: Need to optimize asset management, to improve and streamline decision-making, and to integrate physical data from field measurement with information from other sources. The Solution: To update cartographic maps from aero photogrammetric survey. To develop a GeoPortal to provide images and maps divided by forest age, control of permanent preservation areas, stage of afforestation and status of georeferencing. Benefits: The system provides Suzano with a monthly "snapshot" of their forests in that month and to correlate information with historical data, thus tracking the evolution of company assets, improving results and reducing process costs. Brazil: Integration enables mapping of the HST project in record time CPRM is the governmental agency responsible for geology mapping nationwide, providing maps and data on the Internet for consultation and research involving analysis of subsoil and landscape. The. challenge: To do the geological and geotechnical mapping for the HST - High Speed Train that will link the two major Brazilian cities: São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The solution: The methodology combined traditional fieldwork with strong support from Geotechnology. The field crews used notebooks equipped with GIS software and thematic maps to support field data collection. Please insert image here Data was transferred to the central office via Internet which, in turn, performed the integration of these data with orthophotos and vector data, generating new layers of information for mapping process. Benefits: more agility for collection, processing, integration and data consolidation. The high productivity achieved was instrumental in completing the project in just three months. Brazil: Enterprise Asset Management System integrated with GIS in electric AES Eletropaulo, the largest electric distribution company in Latin America, invested in a large project starting in 2008, to develop a corporate asset management system to support design, construction and maintenance of electrical network. The challenge: to integrate the network technical cadaster with the accounting system, avoiding rework and operational difficulties; improving network management and maintaining a permanent and automatically updated network data base. The Solution: Integration of GIS with ERP at the main business processes of the company. Benefit: Ensuring equivalence between assets in GIS and ERP, enabling agility and integrity in the implementation of business rules that involves the different environments as well as to ensure transparency to the end user.
