ALUMINUM IN CROP SYSTEMS UNDER NO TILLAGE A uthor: Vanderlise Giongo Adviser Prof. João Mielniczuk SUMMARY The complexing process of aluminum by organic ligards can be used as a strategy for the reduction of toxicity to plants at ph where this element should be found in toxic species. In order to study this effect a bio-experiment was carried out, using soil solution extracted from two crop systems, NM (oat/corn - Avena strigosa/zea mays) and G+M (pigeon pea + corn - Cajanus cajan + Zea mays), soybean seedlings (cv. BR16) were cultivated with addition of four levels of aluminum (0; 0.05; 0.10 and 0.20 mmol dm- 3 ) and a control treatment with CaCl 2 0.002 mol dm -3 solution. The ph reduction associated with the addition of aluminum formed precipitation that reduced the concentrations of aluminum and carbon in the solution. However, the development of the soybean root system was affected by addition of aluminum levels to the soil solution in both crop systems. The reduction in the length of the primary root and the root system was proportional to the amount of added aluminum. The soil solution of the G+M system, without the aluminum addition had twice as much aluminum as compared to the NM system soil solution. In treatments with zero level of aluminum, in spite of such difference, the length of the root system in the G+M soil solution was not different from A/M system. The same behavior was observed at level two of Al. At level one the length of the root system was greater in the G+M, and at the level three was greater in the NM. The G+M system soil solution shows a higher concentration of soluble organic carbon and probability a greater concentration of organic acids suggesting higherg complexing capability of aluminum and reduction of its toxicity.
