1 Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária Unidade curricular: Unidade Básica II - Bioestatística / Biostatistics Docente responsável: Paulo Alexandre Castro Ribeiro Objectivos da unidade curricular e competências a desenvolver: 1. Familiarizar os estudantes com o objectivo da bioestatística ao nível da recolha, compilação, análise e interpretação de dados. 2. Conhecer conceitos importantes da Teoria da Amostragem tendo em vista a sua operacionalização através da inferência estatística. 3. Saber utilizar conceitos relevantes da Inferência Estatística. 4. Tomar consciência que os métodos de Inferência Estatística são caracterizados por uma determinada incerteza (que pode ser quantificada) associada à determinação de uma estatística. 5. Conhecer e saber utilizar a técnica da decisão estatística. Formular hipóteses e avaliá-las através de testes de hipóteses. Saber utilizar o SPSS como base de dados para produzir estatísticas descritivas e dar suporte à inferência e realização de testes estatísticos. Objectives of the curricular unit and competences to be developed: 1. Familiarize students with the purpose of statistics, in a broad sense is the collection, compilation, analysis and interpretation of data. 2. Knowing the importance of sampling theory concepts in view of its operationalization through statistical inference. 3. Learn to use statistical inference, in order to characterize a population starting from a random sample. 4. Becoming aware that the methods of statistical inference are characterized by a given uncertainty (which can be quantified) associated with the determination of a statistic. 5. Know and use the techniques of statistical decision. Formulate hypotheses and evaluate them through hypothesis testing. Learn how to use the SPSS as a database and to produce descriptive statistics and support the inference and statistical tests. Conteúdos programáticos:

T5B Hypothesis tests using SPSS Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos da unidade curricular: Os objectivos relacionam-se com os conteúdos da seguinte forma: Objectivos Conteúdos 1 T1B 2, 3 e 4 T2B e T3B 5 T4B e T5B Ao nível da bioestatística atingem-se os objectivos definidos fazendo interagir conceitos teóricos com aplicações práticas dos mesmos na área das ciências médicas. Os tópicos sobre a decisão estatística servem para transmitir o modus faciendi reconhecido nesta área científica e os aspectos de inferência estatística permitem moldar a acção dos futuros médicos dentista para as decisões de investigação e de trabalho diário, em ambiente de incerteza. Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives: The objectives relate to the contents as follows: Objective Topic 1 T1B 2, 3 e 4 T2B e T3B 5 T4B e T5B At the biostatistics level the goals are reached by making interacting theoretical concepts with practical applications in the same area of medical sciences. The topics on statistical decision serve to convey the modus faciendi recognized in this scientific field and aspects of statistical inference allows to define the

3 statistical knowledge of the future dentist doctors for investigation and day work decisions, in an uncertain environment. Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída): A metodologia lectiva é baseada em sessões teóricas seguidas de sessões teórico-práticas. A avaliação é composta por três componentes: participação presencial, entrega de fichas de trabalho e frequência(s). Ponderação das diferentes componentes de avaliação: Componente de Avaliação Ponderação a) Assiduidade e pontualidade 5% b) Questionários de avaliação e realização/entrega de fichas de trabalho 25%+10% c) Prova de avaliação final frequência 60% OBSERVAÇÕES: 1. A aprovação de um aluno obriga à obtenção de, pelo menos, 9,5/20 valores na frequência realizada. 2. As componentes de avaliação a) e b) só serão consideradas para cálculo da nota final de UBAII: - quando satisfeita a condição referida em 1. - até à realização do exame dois anos após a escolaridade da disciplina, ou seja, a nota final resultante desse exame é ponderada com as componentes a) e b). 3. Nos exames serão admitidos à prova oral os alunos com classificação igual a 8/20 valores. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation): The teaching methodology is based on theoretical sessions followed by theoretical and practical sessions. The evaluation consists of three components: classroom participation, delivery of worksheets and frequency (s). Weighting of the different components of assessment: Weighting of Evaluation Component Weight a) Punctuality and attendance 5% b) Evaluation questionnaires and performance / delivery of worksheets 25%+10% c) Proof for final evaluation 60% COMMENTS: 1. The approval requires a student to obtain at least 9.5/20 points in the prof for final evaluation. 2. The evaluation components a) and b) will be considered for calculating the final grade of the Course: - when satisfied the condition referred in 1. - up to the examination that occurs two years after course participation, this means, the final grade resulting therefrom is weighted with the components a) and b). 3. In the examination will be admitted to oral test students with equal score of 8/20 points.

4 Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos da unidade curricular. A diversificação da metodologia de ensino em duas componentes fundamentais, a saber: exposição de natureza mais teórica acompanhada de resolução de exercícios práticos; apresenta se como uma forma adequada de fazer aprender conceitos de natureza mais abstracta em articulação com o desenvolvimento de capacidades ao nível do saber fazer. A utilização da folha de cálculo MsExcel e do software estatístico SPSS estabelecem a ligação entre as duas Áreas Disciplinares dentro da Unidade Curricular. Em consequência, para cada uma das áreas disciplinares, também a metodologia avaliativa é diversificada (avaliações pontuais através de quiz e frequência e contínua através da resolução de fichas de trabalho) dando a possibilidade aos alunos com diferentes perfis cognitivos (num continuum entre abstraccionista a pragmatista) de alavancarem os seus pontos fortes de natureza cognitiva em algum dos momentos avaliativos previstos. Diversifying the teaching methodology in two key components, namely: more theoretical exposition followed by practical problem solving, presents itself as an appropriate way to learn more abstract concepts in conjunction with the development of capacities at the level of know-how. The use of the spreadsheet MsExcel and the SPSS will establish the link between the two disciplines within the Course. Consequently, for each of the two disciplines within the Course, also the methodology of evaluation is diverse (occasional assessments through quiz and frequency and continuing assessment through the resolution of worksheets). This gives the possibility for students with different cognitive profiles (on a continuum between the abstractionist and pragmatists) to leverage their cognitive strengths at some of the moments of evaluation process.
