At highschool I studied electronics and became also interested in computer science. During my graduation studies at the university, I developed my current interests in networking, security, information systems, auditing, marketing and E- business. Thanks to my MSc degree, I developed a profound knowledge about E-marketing and more precisely about marketing and newsletters. Since teenager I've been involved in associations and the organization of events. I've been making use of my natural skill of team management and leadership organizing ICT meetings, lan parties and most recently the Document Freedom Day. Students and teachers started to realize that there are many costs involved, especially when Microsoft released two new versions of their Office suite in three years. Most people have no money to upgrade, and even the market started to look at other options.considering this context, Adriano Afonso, a Portuguese technical trainer and professor, decided to build the first open manual devoted to ICT and OpenOffice.org (before the acquisition by SUN Microsystems). The reason came from two needs, first because trainers need to build their own manuals for some courses, and second, there are not many literature options covering open source solutions. After gathering much information available in his own language (Portuguese) around ICT and OpenOffice, Adriano developed a project to which many people contributed with their own materials and the E-book has already hit the 2nd edition. The 3rd edition of this manual wishes to go one step further. With more help from other ICT teachers, not only does it aspire to be accepted as a school manual, offering an option for teachers, professors, trainers, students, and professionals, but it also aims at being the first manual of LibreOffice in Portuguese language. ACM New York, NY, USA 2013 July 11, 2013 Authors: Adriano Afonso The success of Open Source Software (OSS), along with the importance that their communities have created around their project's and products (Ubuntu, LibreOffice, Android and CyanogenMod, etc) has recently attracted the attention of researchers and commercial companies. While the first ones are learning lessons from the success of OSS and applying some of them, the second ones are also acquiring knowledge. They are now more open minded and import the apprenticeship to develop their systems, implement it to their structure and even help to make them compatible with their products (like HTC, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson do with CyanogenMod). These OSS communities are normally called communities of practice and they are a group of people who are informally bounded by their common interest and practice in a specific domain. The LibreOffice Portuguese Community has been in great growth and trying to answer the "The Document Foundation" (TDF) requests. The "real time" translations of the package and recently the development of the IT and LibreOffice Open Manual are examples. The author feels that it is time to make a short scientific analysis, through a reading of the creative processes and production, based on international scientific developments and conclusions. The objective of this paper is to make the first step of a study of how LibreOffice is contributing to the sustainable development in Portugal.
