PILAR Societal Challenges 1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing 2. Foodsecurity, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy 3. Secure, clean and efficient energy 4. Smart, green and integrated transport 5. Climateaction, resource efficiency and raw materials 6. Inclusive, innovative and secure societies PILAR Societal Challenges- Alterações Climáticas Cerca de 35% do orçamento do H2020 será dedicado a temas Clima Over the coming decades, Europe will be challenged by increased competition for limited and finite natural resources, by the effects of climate change, in particular on primary production systems (agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture) and by the need to provide a sustainable, safe and secure food supply for the European and an increasing global population. sociedade saúde biodiversidade transportes emergência pescas bem-estar energia agricultura desastres naturais 5
PILAR Societal Challenges Referencias a Alterações Climáticas (1) CHALLENGE 2 -Food security, sustainable agriculture, Marine and Maritime research and the bio-economy Securing sufficient supplies of safe and high quality food and other bio-based products by developing productive and resource-efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services along with competitive and low carbon supply chains. o Increasing production efficiency and coping with climate changewithin sustainable agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture; o Use of technologies and change of practices to increase GHG mitigationand the adaptative capacity of the agricultural sector to adverse effects of climate change; o Coping with social, environmental, climate and economic changes from local to global at all stages of the food and feed production chain; o Promotion of low carbon, resource efficient, sustainable and competitive European bio-based industries to reduce EU dependency on fossil fuels. PILAR Societal Challenges Referencias a Alterações Climáticas (2) CHALLENGE 3 -SECURE, CLEAN AND EFFICIENT ENERGY Making the transition to a reliable, sustainable and competitive energy system, in the face of increasing resource scarcity, increasing energy needs and climate change: oreducing energy consumption and carbon footprint through smart and sustainable usage -> enhancing security of energy supply, reducing environmental and climate impacts and boosting competitiveness. orobust decision making and public engagement ->to build databases and scenarios for an enlarged Union and the assessment of the impact of energy and energy related policies on security of supply, the environment and climate change, society and competitiveness of the energy industry; to carry out socio-economic research activities. ospecific implementation aspects -> support the implementation of the research and innovation agenda of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) to achieve the objectives of the Union's energy and climate change policy. 6
PILAR Societal Challenges Referencias a Alterações Climáticas (3) CHALLENGE 4 -SMART, GREEN AND INTEGRATED TRANSPORT Achieving a European transport system that is resource-efficient, environmentally-friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of citizens, the economy and society: oresource efficient transport that respects the environment ->development and take up of the necessary solutions for all transport modes, which will drastically reduce transport's emissions that are harmful to the environment lower its dependence on fossil fuels, and hence reduce transport impact on biodiversity and preserve natural resources. odeveloping smart equipment, infrastructures and services -> optimise transport operations and reduce resource consumption. Particular attention will be given to the climate resilience of infrastructures. PILAR Societal Challenges Referencias a Alterações Climáticas (3) CHALLENGE 5 -CLIMATE ACTION, RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND RAW MATERIALS Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change o Improve the understanding of climate change o Assess impacts, vulnerabilities and develop innovative cost-effective adaptation and risk prevention measures o Support mitigation policies Developing comprehensive and sustained global environmental observation and information systems o Earth observation and monitoring must build on advances in ICT, space technologies and enabled networks, remotely sensed observations, novel in situ sensors, mobile services, communication networks, participatory web-service tools and improved computing and modelling infrastructure Specific implementation aspects o Contribute to UNFCCC global technology mechanism o Building on the outcomes of the UN Rio+20 Conference o Contribute to GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) operational services 7
