HIPÓTESE DE GAIA: BIOSFERA CONTROLA O CLIMA Gaia is a complex entity involving the Earth s biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and soil; the totality constituting a feedback of cybernetic system which seeks an optimal physical and chemical environment for life on this planet James Lovelock, 1979 53

HIPÓTESE DE GAIA : MODELO DAISYWORLD Daisyworld is a very simple planet that has only two species of life on its surface -- white and black daisies. The planet is assumed to be well-watered, with all rain falling at night so that the days are cloudless. The atmospheric water vapor and CO2 are assumed to remain constant, so that the greenhouse of the planet does not change. The key aspect of Daisyworld is that the two types of daisies have different colors and thus different albedos. 56 In this way, the daisies can alter the temperature of the surface where they are growing
HIPÓTESE DE GAIA : MODELO DAISYWORLD black daisies absorb more heat white daisies reduce TºC optimum interval Coevolution of climate and vegetation at increasing (red) and decreasing (blue) insolation. T0 is the global temperature of the corresponding planet without vegetation 57

O AQUECIMENTO DO PLANETA : FLUTUAÇÕES NATURAIS ex Younger Dryas? This cold episode is identified as the Younger Dryas cold phase. Recent studies show this inteval began with an ~7oC drop in temperature, in only 20 years. The event ended as suddenly as it had begun with a dramtic increase in temperature of ~7oC. A total shutdown of the ocean conveyor might lead to a big chill like the Younger Dryas, when icebergs appeared as far south as the coast of Portugal. Or the conveyor might only temporarily slow down, potentially causing an era like the "Little Ice Age," a time of hard winters, violent storms, and droughts between 1300 and 1850. That period's weather 68 extremes caused horrific famines, but it was mild compared with the Younger Dryas.
O AQUECIMENTO DO PLANETA : IMPACTO HUMANO? In the late 19th century, a Swedish chemist, Svante Arrhenius, noticed that human activities, such as the burning of coal and other fossil fuels for heat, and the removal of forested lands for urban development, 69 led to higher concentrations of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, in the atmosphere.
