A escolha foi feita não só pela admiração que tenho por este escritor, mas sobretudo pelo fato dele ser um dos raros antropólogos que é algo de um polímata, discutindo assuntos tão variados como o comportamento dos primatas, a ecologia, simbolismo, religião, política, parentesco, economia, etc...e em vários contextos sociais. Com sua pesquisa de campo centrada na Polinésia, Sahlins não hesita em escrever sobre sua própria sociedade. Além disso, é um autor que reformula constantemente suas próprias idéias (sobretudo a partir de uma estada em Paris de 1967 a 1969) e que maneja uma pluralidade de abordagens teóricas.
