UFRGS collaboration with GERDAU UFRGS (Prof Vilela) started a strong collaboration with Gerdau Aços Especiais Charqueadas about 20 years ago. Many projects in steelmaking, continuous casting, etc. Student support and later hiring by Gerdau. Several thesis (MSc and undergraduate) and some dissertations (PhD).

Specialty Alloys- Alloy design Researcher : Alexandre Bellegard Farina, MSc Development of a wear resistant valve alloy containing hard particles: Wear and sulphuric acid corrosion resistant alloy with equivalent hot resistance of actual Ni Base Alloys designated to high performance exhaust or intake valves for diesel engines to cope with Euro 5 Exhaust Emission imits. Publication: Patent filled and to be published at Superalloys 2012. Development of a low nickel valve alloy: Hot oxidation and sulphuric acid corrosion resistant alloy with equivalent hot resistance of Ni Base Alloys designated to high performance valves for diesel engines to cope with Euro 5 Exhaust Emission imits. High speed Steels and Tool Steels Researcher: José Britti Bacalhau, MsC New precipitation model in H11 too steel: showing the influence of silicon on secondary carbide precipitation sequence and the effects on mechanical properties Publication: ABM Congress, 2008, Tooling 2009 (Aachen) and PTM 2010 Congress (Avignon). Discussion on Hardening variables for high speed steel M2 by means of bend toughness and microstructure evaluations, concerning: hardening temperature, quenching rate and diverse hardening/tempering possibilities for lower hardness applications. Publication: Italy Innovation Heat Treating Conference, 2008. Development of a new bainitic direct hardening tool steel: for application in big plastic injection moulds, using principles of microalloying technology. Publication: Patent filled, being presented to costumers and publications being planned. 23
Stainless Steels alloy design Researcher: Alexandre Sokolowski, MSc : Development of a New Families of Stainless Stees: Thermo-Calc helped in alloy design of better compositions of Supermartensitic 13%Cr stainless steels used in the Off Shore Oil industry showing the effects of different Nb/V relationships in the residual ferrite content as well as the best rolling temperatures. In the development of lean duplex stainless steels we designed news compositions using the alpha/gamma predictions for different alloys compositions. The prototype alloys were produced successfully according the Thermo-Calc predictions. Development of UNS S 32760 superduplex stainless steel produced in large diameter rolled bars according NORSOK standard. ThermoCalc helped to chose compositions and processing parameters that minimize intermetallics and nitrides precipitation during forging operations. Publication at INOX 2010-10th Brazilian Stainless Steel Conference (2010). 24
Solidification Researcher: Eduardo Netto de Souza, PhD: Solidification: Simulations of the solidification process were implemented in the last year bringing the necessity of having the correct database in the pre-processor mode. Thermo-Calc was used to perform the thermodynamic calculation for multi-component systems as thermo physical properties. The materials properties of the liquid, solid and mushy zone are critical factors in casting simulations. The properties, as a function a temperature, include the enthalpy profile, solid or liquid fraction formation during the process, specific heat and density for multicomponents alloys. 25
Inclusion control Researcher: Mario Mantovani, PhD Clean Steel: In order to produce valve steels with high cleanliness we conducted a research in the last two years using thermodynamics information, especially concerning the interaction between liquid steel and refractories used in continuous casting billet machine. As result of this study we could develop a better understanding of the interaction mechanism between MgO tundish lining concretes and the steel. Publication: The study is reported in the paper published in CFI- Ceramic Forum Int., Publication: ABM Congress, 2008 26
Thermomechanical Simulations Researcher: Roberto Tibúrcio Frota, MSc: Thermomechanical Processing of Ni Base Alloys: Numerical simulations of rolling process of Ni Base alloys, like Nimonic an Inconel alloys, using the finite element method implemented in the commercial code Deform, together of new deformation data determined from flow stress in physical simulations using torsion tests, allowed us to formulate the conditions in order to control the grain size after rolling. Publication: ABM Congress, 2008 Open Die Forging Process Simulation: In order producing forged parts with increasingly internal quality, especially to the energy industry, we succeed in apply the finite element method implemented in the commercial code Deform, assessing process parameters like die geometries, forging technique and operation sequence.
