Serão analisados vários géneros cultivados ao longo da Idade Média e os seus contextos culturais. O cruzamento de perspectivas interdisciplinares, favorecido pela organização em módulos a cargo de professores especializados na literatura específica de um dado país, permitirá informar dos principais traços definidores da literatura e da poética medievais. 5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit This post graduation seminar aims at inviting students to get acquainted with some of the most paradigmatic texts and authors of European medieval literature. Several medieval genres will be studied as well as their respective cultural contexts. This seminar will take place in modules, taught by specialized professors in each one of the specific European medieval literatures. This will allow for the crossing of interdisciplinary perspectives which will inform about the main defining traits of medieval literature and poetics.

Chaucer and the poetics of authorship: The Canterbury Tales. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Pretende se que os alunos conheçam alguns dos textos fundamentais da literatura medieval de vários países europeus, tendo em atenção não só as características singulares de cada um, mas também a rede de correspondências que entre eles se estabelece. Compreenderão assim que a poética medieval, tal como muitos aspetos da sua cultura, se organiza em torno de autoridades adoptadas que depois se adaptam a novos modelos e estruturas originais do pensamento. A obra medieval é assim única, porque aberta e constantemente reinventada. O programa segue deste modo uma ordem cronológica, abordando autores e obras que estabelecem um diálogo profundo entre si. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives With this seminar students will become acquainted with several fundamental texts of the European Middle Ages, not only in order to recognize their unique characteristics but also to notice how they establish a network of common motives and themes among them. Students

3 will thus be able to understand that medieval poetics, as well as many aspect of medieval culture, is organized around adapted authorities that then adapt themselves to new models and original structures of thought. Medieval literary texts are therefore unique because they are open to new refashioning and reinventions. As such, the syllabus of this curricular unit follows a chronological perspective, centering on texts and authors which establish a deep dialogue among themselves. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) A contextualização dos autores e obras estudados exigirá um enquadramento teórico, embora as sessões do seminário pretendam ser maioritariamente centradas na discussão e análise dos textos medievais propostos para reflexão, de que todos deverão participar. Estando o seminário organizado por módulos, o mesmo acontecerá com a avaliação, que terá por base um conjunto de pequenos trabalhos de 6 ou 7 páginas (em formato de comunicação), cada um dos quais sobre um dos autores estudados e a ser entregue ao professor respectivo. Na avaliação final será ainda contemplada a participação efectiva nas sessões. Cada módulo = 20% (trabalho: 15%; participação regular no seminário: 5%) 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) The contextualization of both texts and authors will demand a theoretical approach. Nevertheless, the sessions will be mostly centered on the analysis and discussion of the medieval texts chosen for the seminar in which all students must participate. The seminar will be organized in modules and so will assessment. The latter will consist on several written works about each one of the authors and texts studied in class, i. e., in five works of about 7 pages each (in paper format) to be given to the teacher responsible for each one of the five modules into which the seminar is divided. Final assessment will also take in consideration oral participation in class. Each module = 20% (written work: 15%; participation in class: 5%)

4 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Por intermédio da leitura e reflexão sobre os textos medievais e seus contextos específicos, os alunos são orientados para entenderem algumas das particularidades mais marcantes da poética e da cultura medievais. As aulas terão, pois, uma importante componente teórica sobre os autores, textos e respectivos contextos. Terão igualmente uma vertente prática em que os alunos serão convidados a reflectir sobre a singularidade desses mesmos textos e sua relação intertextual com as outras obras que fazem parte do programa. Verificarão assim de que modo a poética na Idade Média se vai construindo durante o longo período medieval que se prolonga por dez séculos. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes Students will be invited to read and reflect upon medieval texts and their specific contexts in order to recognize some of the specificities of medieval poetics and culture. Sessions will therefore have a theoretical basis centered on the texts, authors and their contexts, but will also have an important practical approach in which students will reflect upon the uniqueness of those same texts as well as on the intertextual relationship they establish with all the others studied in the seminar. As such, students they will be able to understand how medieval poetics developed throughout the long medieval period, which lasted for ten centuries. 10.Bibliografia 1.
