1 1.Nome da unidade curricular Inglês no Mundo English in the World 2.Ciclo de estudos 1 3.Docente responsável e respectivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular (preencher o nome completo) RITA Moreira de Almeida QUEIROZ DE BARROS Gonçalves Pereira (45h TP + 15h O) 4.Outros docentes e respectivas horas de contacto na unidade curricular n.a. 5.Objectivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências a desenvolver pelos estudantes) O principal objectivo da UC é a apresentação, (socio)linguisticamente enquadrada, da difusão do inglês pelo mundo e respectivas consequências. Nesse sentido, no final os alunos deverão conhecer: (i) a presença do inglês no globo, como língua nativa ou adicional, suas motivações históricoculturais e principais consequências sociolinguísticas (multilinguismo, code-switching, variedades mistas, anglicização crescente de outras línguas); (ii) o desenvolvimento e as características da(s) variedade(s) padrão na comunidade pluricêntrica actual; (iii) características distintivas de alguns dos chamados novos ingleses; (iv) os motivos para a transformação do inglês na língua franca internacional (ELF), suas tendenciais características nestas funções e consequências deste novo estatuto para o ensino da língua e as comunidades tradicionalmente não anglófonas. Esta UC pretende ainda desenvolver a capacidade de análise linguística, a metalinguagem e as competências de investigação autónoma dos alunos. 5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit The aim of the course is to provide students with a (socio)linguistically informed presentation of the spread of English through the globe and of its consequences. More specifically, at the end of the course students should be familiar with: (i) the presence of English in the world (as a native or additional language), its historic and cultural motivations and main sociolinguistic consequences (multilingualism, code-switching, mixed varieties, anglicisation of other languages); (ii) the development and distinguishing traits of its standard variety(es) in today s pluricentric speech community; (iii) the specificities of some of its new varieties; (iv) the motivations for the emergence of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), its characteristics and main consequences for the teaching of English and for traditionally non-anglophone communities. The course also aims at developing students analytical capacities and consolidating their

2 metalanguage and autonomous research. 6.Conteúdos programáticos 1. The expanding circle: from English as a foreign language to English as a lingua franca. 4.1 The concept of ELF. 4.2 Main structural tendencies. 4.3 Consequences: the teaching of English, internacional diglossia and anglicisation. 7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular O mapeamento da anglofonia, dos seus fundamentos e modelos de expansão (1) resume a

3 presença do inglês no mundo. A consideração subsequente do círculo interior das variedades do inglês (aquelas que são língua nativa) (2) e da(s) sua(s) norma(s) permite problematizar o pluricentrismo actual e descrever variedades nativas não padrão ou mais recentes (ex.: cockney, inglês australiano). A consideração do círculo exterior (3) inclui um enquadramento dos novos ingleses usados como segunda língua, descrição de exemplos (ex.: inglês indiano), referência à relevância do multilinguismo e do code-switching nas comunidades em que vigoram e apresentação sumária de pidgins e crioulos de base inglesa. O último item (4) apresenta o conceito de inglês como língua franca e respectivas motivações, identifica as suas principais tendências e promove a discussão das suas consequências para o ensino e comunidades tradicionalmente não anglófonas. Estes conteúdos fomentam a investigação autónoma. 7.Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives The mapping of the English-speaking world with reference to its motivations and models of expansion (1) is a direct response to aim (i) above. The subsequent consideration of the inner circle of the varieties of (English (i.e. spoken as a native language) and of its standard variety(es) (2) allows for the discussion of the present pluricentrism of English. The description of the outer circle of English (3) includes the systematisation of the structural and sociolinguistic specificities of some examples, a reference to multilingualism and codeswitching in the speech communities where they are spoken and mention to examples of English-based pidgins and creoles. The consideration of the more recent role of English as the international lingua franca (4) intends to promote a discussion of its motivations, characteristics and consequences, especially in traditionally non-anglophone speech communities. The syllabus presented stimulates autonomous research. 8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) Sendo a UC de natureza teórico-prática, há uma alternância entre momentos expositivos, apoiados em meios textuais e audiovisuais, e momentos de participação activa dos alunos. Estes últimos traduzem-se sobretudo em: (i) apresentação e discussão de bibliografia de leitura obrigatória; (ii) análise de exemplares, escritos ou orais, das variedades linguísticas estudadas; (iii) apresentação oral e escrita de trabalhos sobre temas relacionados com o programa mas de escolha livre. A importância atribuída à investigação autónoma reflecte-se nos critérios de avaliação adoptados: a nota final é a média ponderada de (i) participação oral - 30%; (ii) um teste escrito 35%; (iii) um trabalho individual ou, em alternativa, um teste escrito (35%). O apelo à investigação individual é facilitado pela profusão de materiais de análise disponíveis em linha. 8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) This curricular unit combines a theoretical and a practical approach. Classes include periods of exposition by the teacher, often supported by audiovisual materials, and others of active student involvement, namely: (i) presentation and discussion of theoretical texts scheduled for the class;

4 (ii) analyses of written and oral examples of the varieties of American English considered; (iii) written and oral presentation of research papers on topics related to the syllabus but chosen by the students. The recognition of the importance of autonomous research is reflected on the assessment criteria: the final mark is based on daily participation (30%), a written test (35%) and either another written test or an individual paper (35%). Students are invited to explore the profusion of materials that is available online. 9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular Combinando momentos expositivos (tendencialmente apoiados em meios audiovisuais) e a participação frequente dos alunos na aula (através da discussão de textos teóricos, da análise de textos ilustrativos das variedades estudadas e da apresentação de trabalhos sobre temas relacionados com o programa), a metodologia adoptada permite que os estudantes: (i) dominem os instrumentos terminológicos e conceptuais de natureza (socio)linguística que possibilitam o estudo informado da presença do inglês no mundo actual; (ii) adquiram uma visão panorâmica da difusão do inglês pelo globo e respectivas motivações histórico-culturais; (iii) entendam a diferente natureza das variedades do inglês que assim se desenvolveram, dominando os modelos explicativos apresentados na bibliografia; (iv) identifiquem as principais variedades padrão da actualidade e respectivas especificidades; (v) desenvolvam descrições sistematizadas e teoricamente enquadradas das características (socio)linguísticas de outras variedades do inglês; (vi) contactem, mesmo que remotamente, com a maior diversidade possível dessas variedades; (vii) tomem conhecimento da existência de pidgins, crioulos e outras variedades de contacto de base inglesa; (viii) consciencializem e problematizem a utilização do inglês como língua franca internacional, identificando as suas características, sedes e contextos preferenciais e consequências para o ensino da língua e as comunidades linguísticas tradicionalmente não anglófonas (diglossia e anglicização); (ix) desenvolvam capacidades de investigação autónoma e de exposição oral e escrita de investigação na área da (socio)linguística. Para além de dar resposta, assim, aos principais objectivos da unidade curricular, a metodologia descrita tem a vantagem adicional de fomentar o contacto com uma diversidade de materiais, designadamente textos escritos, orais e audiovisuais muito frequentemente disponíveis em linha, que os alunos podem e devem encarar como objecto de análise. Note-se, por último, que o recurso a meios audiovisuais nas sessões expositivas adquire particular relevo nesta unidade curricular, na medida em que a dimensão fonético-fonológica é das mais importantes no universo das variedades do inglês. 9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes The main characteristic of the methodology adopted in this curricular unit is the combination of periods of exposition by the teacher (usually supported by textual and audio-visual materials) and periods of active participation by the students (especially by means of the presentation and

5 discussion of theoretical texts, analyses of written and oral examples of the varieties of English considered, and the presentation of research papers on topics considered in the course). This teaching methodology allows students to: (i) be presented with the (socio)linguistic concepts and terminology required for an academic study of the presence of English in the globe; (ii) acquire an overview of the spread of English through the globe and of its historic and cultural motivations; (iii) understand the differences in the nature of the varieties that have resulted from the spread of English and apprehend the systematising models in the literature; (iv) identify the main standard varieties of present-day English and their linguistic specificities; (v) know systematic and theoretically informed descriptions of the (socio)linguistic characteristics of other varieties of English; (vi) contact, even though remotely, with as many extraterritorial varieties of English as possible; (vii) acknowledge the existence of English-based pidgins, creoles and other kinds of contact varieties; (vi) be aware of and question the use of English as the international lingua franca, identifying its characteristics, contexts of use and consequences for traditionally non-anglophone speech communities (diglossia, anglicisation) and the teaching of the language; (vii) develop their competences for autonomous research and research exposition within the area of (socio)linguistics. Furthermore, the teaching methodology described above enables and fosters students contact with a diversity of materials, namely written, oral and audiovisual texts, which are often available online and that students can and should envision as research objects.
