Objetivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências) Nesta UC pretende-se que o estudante desenvolva as competências necessárias para realizar autonomamente um trabalho de investigação relevante na área da Biologia Marinha, original e de qualidade científica. Pretende-se que o estudante desenvolva os seguintes conhecimentos e competências: 1) formule uma questão de investigação relevante; 2) demonstre conhecimento aprofundado da literatura relativa à área de investigação; 3) conheça, selecione e utilize corretamente procedimentos metodológicos adequados ao problema; 4) analise e interprete os resultados da sua investigação; 5) interprete e discuta os resultados obtidos tendo em consideração o estado da arte; 6) desenvolva capacidade de análise crítica e de síntese; 7) desenvolva aptidões de escrita e comunicação oral. Esta UC serve também para criar a perceção sobre a importância da qualidade e do rigor intelectual na procura de conhecimento científico e sobre a necessidade de seguir padrões éticos inquestionáveis. Conteúdos programáticos Não existe nenhum conteúdo científico especifico associado à UC pois este varia de acordo com o tema e objetivos do trabalho, que pode envolver investigação experimental e/ou modelação na área de conhecimento em Biologia Marinha. Porém, em termos gerais, podem ser definidos os seguintes conteúdos programáticos: 1) Execução do estudo empírico (execução do delineamento experimental, realização das tarefas experimentais, colheita de dados) 2) Análise dos resultados (organização e apresentação dos resultados, gráficos, tabelas, análise de dados, análise estatística) 3) Escrita da dissertação (estruturação e escrita da dissertação de acordo com as normas aceites para textos científicos: introdução, metodologia, resultados, discussão e referências bibliográficas) 4) Discussão pública da dissertação (ato público de defesa do trabalho e avaliação por parte de um júri). 3 Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída) O trabalho a desenvolver nesta UC poderá ser realizado em ambiente académico, em centros de investigação e em empresas, mas neste caso é necessário haver também um orientador na instituição exterior à Universidade do Algarve. O(s) orientador(es) faz(em) um acompanhamento sistemático de todos os aspetos da execução da tese e faculta(m )orientações específicas para sua correta evolução ao longo da UC. A avaliação consiste na apresentação escrita de um relatório de investigação, na forma de uma dissertação científica tradicional (introdução, métodos, resultados e discussão), ou apresentado sob a forma de uma compilação de vários artigos científicos, e na sua apresentação e discussão pública. A dissertação pode ser redigida em Português ou em Inglês. A orientação, admissão a provas, constituição do júri, aceitação do trabalho e ato público de defesa da dissertação estão regulamentados nos artigos 17º a 21º e Anexo II do?regulamento de 2º e 3º ciclos da Universidade do Algarve?. Bibliografia principal A bibliografia utilizada nesta UC dependente do tema de dissertação escolhido. Para a pesquisa de literatura científica atual e especializada, os estudantes têm ao seu dispor na Biblioteca da UAlg ( ) recursos eletrónicos on-line, tais como bases bibliográficas e bases de texto integral (e.g. PubMed, Proquest, Current Contents, Web of Science), através do portal b-on. The students intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences) In this CU the students are expected to develop the skills necessary to independently carry out a relevant original, high-quality research work in the field of Marine Biology. After completion of this CU, the students should be able to: (1) formulate a theoretically relevant research question; (2) acquire a thorough knowledge of the literature on the research area; (3) select and use the relevant methods to explore the research question; (4) analyze and interprete the results obtained during his research work; (5) discuss the results obtained, based on state-of-the-art knowledge; 6) develop critical thinking, synthetic and reasoning skills ; 7) develop writing and oral communication skills. This CU also promotes the quality and rigor, and the need to follow unquestionable ethical standards in scientific research. Syllabus There are no specific programmatic contents for this CU since they are dependent on the theme and objectives defined for each research work, which may involve experimental, descriptive and/or modeling approaches in the field of Marine Biology. Generally, the following contents could be considered: 1) Development of the empirical/modeling study (execution of the experimental design, accomplishment of the study practical tasks, data collection) 2) Analysis of the results (organization and presentation of results, graphs, tables, data analysis, statistical analysis) 3) Writing the dissertation (structuring and writing the dissertation in accordance with accepted standards for scientific texts: introduction, methodology, results, discussion and references) 4) Public discussion of the dissertation (public act of defense and evaluation by a jury). 6 Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) The work in this CU, can be developed in universities, research institutes or companies. In these situations, there must be also a student supervisor from the external host institution. The supervisor (s) will make a systematic monitoring of all aspects of the thesis, and provide specific guidelines for their proper development. The CU evaluation includes a written research report, presented in the form of a traditional scientific dissertation (introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references) or as a compilation of several scientific articles, and its public presentation and discussion. The dissertation may be written in Portuguese or English. Thesis supervision, jury composition, dissertation acceptance and public act of dissertation defense are regulated in Articles 17 to 21 and Annex II of the?regulation of the 2nd and 3rd cycles of the University of Algarve?. Main Bibliography The literature used for this CU will depend on the topic chosen for the dissertation. For searching specialized scientific literature, students may access the Library of UAlg ( ) online electronic resources, including bibliographic databases and full-text databases (e.g., PubMed, Proquest, Current Contents, Web of Science), through the b-on portal.
