Usamos o comparative degree para expressarmos comparações entre dois elementos quaisquer. Os três tipos que estudaremos: Comparative of equality Comparative of inferiority Comparative of superiority
Usamos o superlative degree ao declararmos a supremacia de um elemento qualquer sobre os demais. Os dois tipos que estudaremos: Superlative of inferiority Superlative of superiority Existem regras específicas para as formações do comparativo e do superlativo, dependendo do adjetivo usado. Veja regras a seguir:
EQUALITY Forma-se com as + adj. + as John is as tall as James.
Inequality Forma-se com not as / so + adj. + as Peter is not as (so) tall as James. Inferiority Forma-se com less + adj. (than) Her work is less interesting than ours.
Superiority: Para adjetivos de uma sílaba, forma-se acrescentando ER ao adjetivo + than. This country is richer and freer than that Se o adjetivo terminar em c.v.c., dobra-se a consoante final. big -bigger hot -hotter. Se o adjetivo terminar em y precedido de consoante, perde este Y para I; caso contrário, conserva-se o Y. dry -drier grey -greyer. Exceção: shy- shyer
Acrescenta-se, também, ER a adjetivos de duas sílabas terminados em Y, LE, OW, ER She is happier today than she was that day. (happy) This rule is simpler than that (simple) That river is narrower than this. (narrow) Paul is cleverer than Mary. (clever)
Para adjetivos com mais de uma sílaba, forma-se acrescentando-se more antes do adjetivo. This car is more comfortable than that Acts are more useful than words.
Inferiority Forma-se com the least + adj. This is the least interesting film I've ever seen in my life.
Superiority: Para adjetivos de uma sílaba, forma-se com: the + adj. (acrescido de est). This is the freest and the richest country in the world. Para adjetivos de duas sílabas terminados em Y, LE, OW, ER usamos a mesma formação acima. This is the happiest day of my life. He is the simplest man in the community. This is the shallowest river in this country. Mary is the cleverest woman I've ever seen.
Acrescentamos the most antes de adjetivos de duas sílabas com outras terminações, e antes adjetivos com mais de duas sílabas: That is the most careful dealer in our firm. That is the most expensive car in the world.

old: velho older / oldest referem-se a pessoas, coisas ou animais. elder / eldest somente se referem a pessoas que sejam membros da mesma família. São adjetivos. Elder não pode ser usado com than. Do you know my elder brother? He s older than you.
COMPARATIVO DUPLO A) É comum na linguagem diária o uso de expressões como faster and faster, more and more expensive para para dizer que algo está aumentando o tempo todo: The weather is getting hotter and hotter. His performance is becoming better and better.
COMPARATIVO DUPLO B) The faster, the better Nós usamos este comparativo duplo para dizer que uma mudança em uma coisa acontece com uma mudança em outra: There s no time to lose. The faster you drive, the better will be. The higher the price, the more reliable the product.
