Being hungry amps up your desire to acquire things, according to new research from the University of Minnesota s Carlson School of Management.
In one of five studies conducted, two groups who hadn t eaten in at least four hours were asked to take a survey on binder clips. But before the survey, one group participated in a blind taste test of cakes. During the survey itself, participants could request as many samples of binder clips as they wanted, and the hungry group asked for 70% more products than their cake-eating cohorts.

Typographic Marks Lack Of Sleep Kills Brain Cells, New Study Shows A study published this week in the Journal of Neuroscience found that staying awake too long destroys brain cells in mice, and may do the same in humans.
It s the first study to show (if only in animals) that sleep loss can lead to irreversible brain cell damage. Researchers from the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania found that prolonging wakefulness damages a particular type of brain cell called locus ceruleus (LC) neurons, which play an important role in keeping us alert and awake.
We now have evidence that sleep loss can lead to irreversible injury, says lead author Sigrid Veasey, MD, associate professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania s Perelman School of Medicine.

Typographic Marks Why does sad music make us feel happy? Researchers at Tokyo University of the Arts and the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan set out to answer this question in a recent study published online.
They posed the question, "why do we listen to sad music if it evokes sadness?" The results show that, contrary to popular belief, listening to sad music actually makes us "feel more romantic, more blithe, and less tragic emotions."
In the study, researchers divided emotions relating to music into two categories: perceived emotion and felt emotion for 44 participants, who listened to two sad songs and one happy song. The participants then rated their emotions against 62 words or phrases, saying how much they identified with each on a scale ranging from 0 (not at all) to 4 (very much).
Though the participants perceived that the sad music was "tragic," their actual experience of listening to the music was rated much more cheerfully.
