Objetivos de aprendizagem (conhecimentos, aptidões e competências a desenvolver pelos estudantes) Pretende-se que os alunos adquiram conhecimento acerca do funcionamento dos processos subjacentes à cognição humana, entendida como sistema de processamento de informação. O estudo das várias funções cognitivas inclui a relação entre os modelos teóricos existentes e a apresentação e discussão dos principais resultados empíricos obtidos através dos métodos de investigação utilizados nas ciências cognitivas. Pretende-se ainda que os alunos sejam capazes de aplicar os conhecimentos adquiridos nesta UC na compreensão do comportamento e outros outputs resultantes do processamento da informação no cérebro humano, em situações quotidianas, discutindo amplamente exemplos dos mesmos processos.
Learning outcomes of the curricular unit Students shall acquire knowledge about the underlying processes of human cognition, understood as a system for information processing. The study of the different cognitive functions includes the relation between extant theoretical models and the presentation and discussion of the main empirical results obtained from the research methods used in cognitive science. A further goal of this curricular unit is to prepare students to apply the acquired knowledge to the understanding of behavior and other outputs of information processing in the human brain, to everyday situations, providing a wide range of examples to discuss. 6. 7. Metodologia de ensino (avaliação incluída) As aulas teóricas usam o método expositivo, transmitindo conhecimento sobre os pontos do programa, e onde os alunos são encorajados a participar ativamente; visam capacitar os alunos para identificar e descrever os modelos teóricos atuais pertinentes à sensação, percepção, atenção e memória e a reconhecer o percurso histórico que gerou esses modelos. As aulas teórico-práticas privilegiam a discussão orientada de projetos e artigos, e demonstrações práticas, familiarizando os alunos com as metodologias de investigação em Ciências Cognitivas e fomentando a aquisição de competências de reflexão crítica e planeamento de estudos experimentais. Nestas aulas terão também lugar a apresentação e discussão de trabalhos dos alunos. A avaliação inclui: trabalho em grupo (resumo/discussão de uma investigação recente reportada na imprensa de divulgação científica): apresentação escrita (15%) e oral (15%) Provas escritas individuais: intercalar (30%) + final (30%) assiduidade, pontualidade e participação nas aulas (10%) A nota mínima é, em cada elemento de avaliação contínua, 7,5 valores. A prova complementar (a realizar por alunos com nota ponderada de 8 ou 9 valores na avaliação contínua) tem uma ponderação de 50% na avaliação final da UC. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation) Theoretical classes focus on conveying scientific knowledge on the main topics of the syllabus, whilst encouraging students to actively participate, aiming (1) to prepare students to identify and describe the theoretical models pertaining to sensation, perception, attention and memory and (2) to be able to recognize the historical steps leading to those models. Theoretical-practical classes focus on oriented discussions of projects and research articles, as well as practical demonstrations, so that students become, on the one hand, familiarized with research methods in cognitive science, and on the other, enabled to plan and to critically reason on experimental studies in this domain. These classes will also encompass student s presentations of group assignments. Evaluation for this course comprises: a group assignment (15% written essay+ 15% oral presentation) individual written tests: midterm test (30%) and final test (30%) attendance, punctuality and participation in classes (10%) A minimum grade of 7,5 is required in each item of the continuous evaluation. The suplementing test [Prova complementar] (taken by students whose UC continuous
